Nebraska U: A Collaborative History (http://unlhistory.unl.edu) is a collaboration between faculty and staff in Archives and Special Collections (Brink, Ducey, and Jewell) and the department of History (Seefeldt). This project engages undergraduates in archival research, historical synthesis, and digital project creation.

Nebraska U uses digital technology to provide a research framework for students exploring the way the study of history is transformed using new media publication forms. Specifically, students in Dr. Seefeldt's "Digital History" course selected a topic from the history of the University; worked with Archives staff to locate materials and thoroughly research that topic; selected items …

Employment Opportunities For New Academic Librarians: Assessing The Availability Of Entry Level Jobs, Eamon Tewell

This study examines the availability of entry level positions in academic libraries to better illuminate the status of the job market for current students and recent graduates of Library & Information Science programs. Over a twelve month period from 2010—2011, 1385 job advertisements were collected, with content analysis methods used to evaluate each advertisement by level of position, institution type, location, department, and job type. Findings revealed one-fifth of jobs advertised to be entry level, with seventy percent of all positions offered by universities, and public services accounting for more than sixty percent of entry level employment opportunities. Taking library services outside of the library seems to be a growing trend in academic libraries, but is it really? In 2011 Stephan and Scott conducted an online survey of academic libraries to measure how and if off-site reference is being utilized in academic libraries in order to provide a snapshot of current and past off-site reference trends. In order to address this question, Susan Barnes Whyte and Jean Caspers share the knowledge they have gained by teaching two writing intensive courses: Information Gathering, a required 4-credit course for Mass Communication majors, and Information Ethics: the Individual as Creator and Consumer, a required 4-credit first year inquiry seminar course. At Ohio State University, a recent move from the quarter to the semester system prompted a revision of two asynchronous, for-credit online information literacy courses we have been teaching for over 10 years on our campus. Online instruction has matured over those years and has become a well-researched, increasingly popular, and evolving form of pedagogy. Several studies within our own field have shown that teaching information literacy in a variety of online formats can be as effective as teaching face-to-face (Burkhardt, Kinnie, & Cournoyer, 2008; Clark & Chinburg, 2010; Salisbury & Ellis, 2003; Beile & Boote, 2004). College & Research Libraries receives a large number of manuscripts each year that have kept the two of us busy, as editorial assistants, with many of the initial reviews of submission for the journal during the last two years. In 2011 alone C&RL received 134 submissions, of which only 46 were finally selected for publication. This acceptance rate demonstrates the rigor of our review process, but it is coupled with our desire to help prospective authors succeed. Beyond A Fad: Why Video Games Should Be Part Of 21st Century Libraries, Kym Buchanan, Angela M. Vanden Elzen

We believe video games have a place in libraries. We start by describing two provocative video games. Next, we offer a framework for the general mission of libraries, including access, motivation, and guidance. As a medium, video games have some distinguishing traits: they are visual, interactive, and based on simulations. We explain how these traits require and reward some traditional and new literacies. Furthermore, people play video games for at least three reasons: immersion, challenge, and connection. Finally, we offer guidelines and examples for how librarians can integrate video games into library collections and programming.

Formal committee structures and reporting lines often get in the way of making changes quickly and may not provide opportunities for leadership development. Communities of Practice (CoPs), as realized at Arizona State University Libraries, provide a flexible model to gather employees from diverse areas and levels of an organization to address a common interest, project or problem. Purpose: This ScholarWorks Authorization form is the official document by which a graduate program communicates its desire to have the selected project permanently archived in ScholarWorks and where a graduate student (a) provides necessary certifications for the final version of his or her graduate project, and (b) grants the university a non-exclusive right to archive the project and make it publicly accessible via ScholarWorks.

Impact Of A New Discovery Service At Li Ka Shing Library, Pin Pin Yeo

At the Li Ka Shing Library, an evaluation of discovery systems was done with one system selected and implemented in a short time frame. The evaluation and the implementation were described. A survey to measure user satisfaction with the new discovery service was conducted and the results analyzed. Based on the results of the survey, the actions taken by the Library to improve the discovery service were discussed. The usage of electronic resources was compared pre- and post-implementation of the discovery system.

San José State University’s (SJSU) Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library implemented a patron-driven acquisition program on March 1, 2011 to make electronically available a wide collection of items without concurrency limits, meet users’ needs on a timely basis, and maximize the collections budget by purchasing materials as needed and selected by University users. In September 2011, SJSU’s Library implemented a simple widget that requested demographic data from its EBL users. Users identified their status (i.e., faculty, staff, or student) and area of discipline. Correlating these data points with EBL-usage statistics, SJSU librarians and staff have begun to question the …

Ethnographic Study Of Information Literacy Librarians’ Work Experience: A Report From Two States, Celene Seymour

This chapter reports on an ethnographic study of the experiences, practices and feelings of academic librarians who teach information literacy. Based on in-depth interviews with nine librarians who have information literacy responsibilities – five in West Virginia and four in Colorado – it examines the real-life work of practitioners in a wide variety of instructional environments. The research considers participants’ preparation for their instructional role, ambiguity about the concept of information literacy, instructional challenges and professional practices. The authentic voices of instructional librarians provide insights into the roadblocks they face, success they experience and their expectations for the future.
