The Anchor: 2012

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

GIS (Geographic Information System) libraries face challenges at both ends of the spectrum when it comes to acquiring GIS data. On one hand, the increase in popularity of GIS driven by services like Google Earth, Bing maps, and open data has made large amounts of GIS data freely available to users. On the other hand, specialty GIS data products, often needed by researchers, industry, and government, can be so costly that they are impossible for a library to purchase on its own. In a world where social media are becoming part of our daily existence in a variety of ways, Twitter is making inroads as a method for engaging students. In fact, a recent study published in the Journal of Computer Assisted Learning found a higher rate of student engagement with faculty and course material--as well as better grades—among students who were Twitter users. Kristina, Makiba, and Brian will describe a collaborative experiment in integrating Twitter into two Art History courses in the fall of 2011. The Center for Social Sciences and Public Policy Research (CSSPPR) at Missouri State University was contracted by the Duane Meyer Library at Missouri State University to conduct a survey of MSU students and faculty concerning their use of and preference for library services. Separate online instruments were used for each of the two sample groups. In this study the CSSPPR measured the responses of a random sample of 266 MSU students and 60 MSU faculty members. Questions focused on the use of various library services and asked respondents to indicate their preferences for particular services. This report summarizes dominant trends …

The complete collection of articles resulting from publicly funded research should be made freely accessible, so that the public can fully use them – (i.e. text mine, data mine, compute on them, create derivative works) without commercial restriction.

Public access policies can be successfully implemented by respecting and working within the current copyright framework.

The federal government is the appropriate entity to provide permanent stewardship of these articles, and is in a unique position to ensure that publicly funded articles are permanently preserved, made accessible, and useable.

Publishers are one player that might be encouraged to participate in public/private partnership …

Teaching Computer Skills To Senior Citizens: A Library Assistant’S Learning Experience, Ngaire I R Smith

This paper describes the challenges of teaching senior citizens in their 70s and 80s elementary Web and computer skills at the University of Georgia’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. Simple tasks such as clicking on links and understanding the difference between the address bar and a search box confused class members and the instructor attempted to address this age divide by developing activities that would make using the Web easier and more fun.

We draw upon our own experience to discuss the use of undergraduate student journals to promote active learning by comparing and contrasting institution-focused (Park Place Economist) and externally-focused (Undergraduate Economic Review) publications, suggesting ways of integrating these journals into upper-division coursework, and describing ways in which economics departments can partner with libraries to facilitate the editorial process and increase the accessibility of the journal.
