A Survey On The Present State Of School Libraries In Benin City, Jerome Idiegbeyan-Ose, Innocent Okoedion Apr 2012

A Survey On The Present State Of School Libraries In Benin City, Jerome Idiegbeyan-Ose, Innocent Okoedion

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Introduction

For an educational programme to succeed, adequate attention must be paid to the development of its library services. Ogunrombi (2005) cited Idowu (1988) and stressed that a developing country like Nigeria, even thought faced with the problems of basic social necessities such as food, shelter, among others cannot afford to abandon library services in its educational programme.

School libraries must be assisted by proper funding to acquire relevant and varied materials for this purpose. Books and non-book materials must be provided. They must be well organized, and the right caliber of staff must be put in place to disseminate …

Understanding The Expectations Of Pakistani Libraries Users: A Libqual Study, Shafiq Ur Rehman

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Introduction

The conventional services and traditional role of university libraries is changed due to multiple sources of information, high demand of users, and application of information technology, competition among service sectors and high student enrolments. The university libraries are also facing different challenges such as advances in information technology, rising cost of material, increased accessibility of research materials via the Web and tentative budget allocations.

Each of these challenges requires library administration to become more concerned of their users' expectations. "Retaining and growing their customer base and focusing more energy on meeting their customers' expectations is the only way for …

“Pico”: PRactice Ebm Skills, INcrease Student Interests With COllaboration Of Librarians And Improve OUtcomes, Archana Kudrimoti, Janice Kuperstein, Shari Levy, Tag Heister, Frank Davis

Library Presentations

Available literature on teaching evidence-based medicine (EBM) to medical students focuses on teaching critical appraisal skills, often in the context of a journal club, workshops or lectures. Being able to utilize EBM effectively means that a learner is able to take a clinical scenario, develop a clinically relevant question, search for the evidence, appraise that evidence, and apply the results of this appraisal back to the individual patient. Hence EBM activity is more likely to become a part of clinical decision-making if medical students practice the skills in the context of direct patient care.

Cresting Toward The Sea Change: Literature Review Of Cataloging And Classification 2009-10, Sue Ann Gardner

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

This review covers cataloging and classification literature published in 2009 and 2010, including relevant explorations of knowledge organization systems and theory. Only English-language literature is reviewed, though not all of the literature covered is U.S.-based. Overarching themes presented in the literature include the merging of library metadata into the Web environment, the continuation of cooperative cataloging in libraries, the role of both controlled and uncontrolled headings in catalog records, and reconsiderations of workflow in light of impending changes to cataloging rules. Notably, several relevant foundational documents were either completed or revised during the review period.

International Political Economy Reference Sources: An Annotated Bibliography, Theodore C. Schwitzner, Chad M. Kahl Apr 2012

International Political Economy Reference Sources: An Annotated Bibliography, Theodore C. Schwitzner, Chad M. Kahl

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

International political economy is an emerging yet specialized field that combines political analysis with the study of markets, trade, and development. With the global economy having an interdependent effect on politics, environment, and society, and with several major economic events of the last 20 years, the authors perceived a need to provide a guide to the sources in this field. This paper seeks to address this issue. The authors identified resources using WorldCat and standard reference sources, such as American Library Association's Guide to Reference Books; the annual American Libraries’ “Outstanding Reference Sources” articles; American Reference Books Annual (ARBA) volumes; …

Off The Shelf And Out Of The Box: Saving Time, Meeting Outcomes And Reaching Students With Information Literacy Modules, Jennifer Kelley Apr 2012

Off The Shelf And Out Of The Box: Saving Time, Meeting Outcomes And Reaching Students With Information Literacy Modules, Jennifer Kelley

Library Scholarship

As institutions of higher learning rapidly expand their offerings of online, hybrid and other distance learning opportunities for their students, librarians must adapt, adopt and improve information literacy instruction methods to accommodate instructors they may never meet and classes they may never see. Many responses to these challenges, such as embedded librarians and tutorial development, however, can be time consuming, expensive and resource-draining. This article discusses the process of creating a low-maintenance, wide-reaching solution to providing generic information literacy instruction to students in online, hybrid, distance and face-to-face courses.

Will An Institutional Repository Hurt My Ssrn Ranking? Calming The Faculty Fear, James M. Donovan, Carol A. Watson Apr 2012

Will An Institutional Repository Hurt My Ssrn Ranking? Calming The Faculty Fear, James M. Donovan, Carol A. Watson

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

Faculty members should not view the institutional repository as a drain on their SSRN rankings. While SSRN excels at delivering their work to the cadre of legal specialists, IRs typically do a better job of presenting it to a broader readership. This expanded exposure should be judged a

positive benefit of participation in the IR, helping to mitigate criticisms of law faculty as sequestered, insular, and writing only for themselves. Anyone interested in giving their ideas the widest possible hearing should deposit their intellectual work in as many venues as possible. For law professors, this means they should have both …

Graphic Novels In Graduate-Level Library And Information Studies Literature And Materials Courses, Elizabeth M. Downey, Karen Davidson

Publications

Graphic novels and comics have garnered acceptance in recent years, finding their way into library collections, literacy programs, scholarly publications and classrooms. This article examines the use of graphic novels in graduate-level library and information studies programs through a survey conducted of instructors teaching at American Library Association-accredited institutions. The authors wanted to determine whether faculty in library and information studies programs were assigning graphic novels in their literature and materials courses, particularly courses with an emphasis on children’s and ‘young adult’ materials, what graphic novels were being assigned, and how they were incorporated into the curriculum.

Infoliteracy@Adistance: Creating Opportunities To Reach (Instruct) Distance Students, Mirah J. Dow, Mohommed Algarni, Heidi Blackburn, Karen Diller, Abdullahi Musa, Padma Polepeddi, Brian Schwartz, Terri Summey, Sandra Valenti

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

This article offers a theoretical model of online, graduate student information seeking behavior. The qualitative methodology used to gather data for the development of the model included an electronic survey and semi-structured interviews conducted online using Adobe Connect Pro™. Participating in the study were 238 graduate students enrolled in at least one online course at a mid-western university. Data analysis included use of Zoomerang™ reports to interpret survey data, and content analysis of interview transcriptions. The resulting evolution of the Bates’ (2002) theoretical model includes new two modes of information seeking: scrutinizing (directed, dynamic), and being alert (undirected, dynamic). The …

Impact Of The New Legal Deposit System On National Bibliographic Control In Uganda: Developments, Practices, And Challenges, James Matovu, Wilberforce Musoke

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Introduction

Uganda has, since 2002, put in place a three-legal deposit centre system constituted of Makerere University Library Legal Deposit Act (1958), revised (1964), under Makerere University Library (MUL); Deposit Library and Documentation Centre Act (1969) under the Uganda Management Institute (UMI), formerly, Institute of Public Administration, and, the National Library of Uganda Act (2003). Legal deposit is important for various reasons that include compilation of an authoritative national bibliography, promotion of copyright protection, monitoring the growth of the publishing industry, stocking of selected libraries including the National Library. In some countries, legal deposit is used as a tool to …
