Information Literacy In The Workplace: A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Yuhfen Diana H. Wu
Information Literacy In The Workplace: A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Yuhfen Diana H. Wu
Faculty and Staff Publications
This cross-cultural study has two main purposes: to investigate how information literacy is perceived in the workplace and to discover how employees obtain information to carry out their jobs in an effective and timely fashion. This project applies a mix of research methods, including site visits, interviews, and a survey. More than 120 participants from forty companies were involved in this study. They were from a wide variety of industries in Taiwan and Silicon Valley, in Northern California, where many companies base offices or operations from around the world. Major obstacles in conducting cross-continent research are cost, time demands, scheduling, …

Be Your Own Architect: Manage Renovation Projects Internally - Part 1, Eric C. Shoaf

Larger library building projects usually require an architect to manage design and construction, but these days many libraries find that the results of space planning often are implemented in smaller, less-expensive initiatives rather than a single large project. Many of these projects involve re-purposing space freed from shelving or other uses, where the total of-the project is to remove the shelves and place new furniture. Further, many have realized that architects and engineers are expensive; and when it comes to renovating an open space, it may be possible to use internal library staff to complete the project.

Provision Of Pandemic Disease Information By Health Sciences Librarians: A Multisite Comparative Case Series., Robin Featherstone, Gabriel Boldt, Nazi Torabi, Shauna-Lee Konrad
Provision Of Pandemic Disease Information By Health Sciences Librarians: A Multisite Comparative Case Series., Robin Featherstone, Gabriel Boldt, Nazi Torabi, Shauna-Lee Konrad
Western Libraries Publications
Objective: The research provides an understanding of pandemic information needs and informs professional development initiatives for librarians in disaster medicine. Methods: Utilizing a multisite, comparative case series design, the researchers conducted semi-structured interviews and examined supplementary materials in the form of organizational documents, correspondence, and websites to create a complete picture of each case. The rigor of the case series was ensured through data and investigator triangulation. Interview transcripts were coded using NVivo to identify common themes and points of comparison. Results: Comparison of the four cases revealed a distinct difference between “client-initiated” and “librarian-initiated” provision of pandemic information. Librarian-initiated …

Scholars Geoportal: A New Platform For Geospatial Data Discovery, Exploration And Access In Ontario Universities, Elizabeth T. Hill, Leanne Trimble
Western Libraries Publications
The need to support and promote the use of geospatial data and available collections has grown at Ontario Universities in recent years. These data, along with numeric data collections, are used to enhance research and expand the skill set of students graduating from a broad array of disciplines. Providing access to these types of data collections has proven challenging, and access points available to large groups of people inside academia, in government and public domains have been made possible through online portal implementations. The defined need for a geospatial portal at Ontario Universities is outlined in the first part of …

So, You Want To Be A Southeastern Librarian? Entry-Level Academic Library Job Trends In The Southeast, Robert Detmering, Claudene Sproles
The Southeastern Librarian
While it is no secret that looking for one’s first job as a librarian can be difficult, especially in the current economic climate, the process can be even more challenging when one’s search must take place within a particular geographic area or region. For a variety of reasons, including financial constraints and family obligations, many entry-level candidates are not in a position to move to any part of the country and start their new lives as professional librarians. The need to focus a job search on a specific region, however, necessarily limits the number of available jobs. Developing a strong …
