In mid-2008, a statewide committee was formed to engage in a comprehensive, Nevada statewide digital planning process. This group consisted of broad membership from the range of Nevada cultural heritage institutions, and was focused on creating a five year digital plan for the state, with an emphasis on collaboration amongst various cultural heritage institutions, increased digitization, and adoption of a digital preservation strategy. This article describes the initial work of the parent committee and two subsequent working groups, funded by the Library Technology and Services Act and aided by outside consultants. Last summer, during a family trip to Yellowstone National Park, my nine year-old son asked how high the water from Old Faithful was spraying and why it was so hot and steamy. Armed with my smartphone and the Concise Encyclopedia Britannica app, I was able to touch, search, and give him the answers: 160 feet and magma. This presentation highlights the key steps and decision points essential to completing a successful map digitization project. Topics to be covered include: overcoming the challenges of scanning large-scale materials (including file sizes and encapsulation), descriptive metadata for map collections, copyright and privacy issues for geographic materials, adding geographic coordinates to map collections, image viewer and interface options for online maps, and methods to track the impact of map digitization with users. I began working at Booth Library in February 2011 as liaison librarian for the Biological Sciences and Chemistry departments. Prior to my arrival, faculty of these departments had not been interacting actively with the library, and students from these departments had not been receiving library instruction geared toward their field of study. Considering discussions I had in library school and following suggestions from my fellow librarians, I created an action plan to introduce myself to these departments.

Today’s first year college students arrive on campus underprepared for the academic demands that await them. Despite the dedicated efforts of high school librarians, research continues to illustrate that students lack basic information literacy skills crucial to their academic success in higher education. In this session high school and academic librarians will explore this issue with participants to identify key deficits in students’ 21st Century Skills.

The presenters will share their insights on college professors’ expectations and offer best practices for educating tomorrow’s college students. Presenters will provide ideas for lesson plans and assessment; actual college assignments will be shared.

This article seeks to identify and provide definitions for the basic terms and concepts of data curation for librarians to properly frame and carry out a data interview using the Data Curation Profiles (DCP) Toolkit. ABSTRACT Using examples from recent archival practice at two western land-grant universities, this article examines the potential benefits of enlisting volunteers from donor organizations to appraise as well as process the archival records of their own associations. The discussion addresses questions regarding the use of trained volunteers to perform appraisal activities, challenges in working with volunteers, and outreach opportunities for archival education among interested members of donor organizations.

The academic catalog is a vital record for colleges and universities. Until the late 1980s, Oregon State University catalogs were published, distributed and archived solely in print format. With the advent of web and digital technologies, the Oregon State University Registrar’s Office also began placing an electronic version of the most recent catalogs online, while the Oregon State University Libraries provided access to earlier versions of the catalog through a subscription to College Source®, an online vendor for academic catalogs.

Applying Web Analytics To Online Finding Aids: Page Views, Pathways, And Learning About Users, Mark R. O'English

Journal of Western Archives

Online finding aids, Internet search tools, and increased access to the World Wide Web have greatly changed how patrons find archival collections. Through analyzing eighteen months of access data collected via Web analytics tools, this article examines how patrons discover archival materials. Contrasts are drawn between access from library catalogs and from online search engines, with the latter outweighing the former by an overwhelming margin, and argues whether archival description practices should change accordingly.

The presenters all handle social media for their libraries, but in very different settings: a large academic library at a public-private research institution, a medium-sized academic library at a private university, and a medium-sized public library in a town that revolves around a university. The workshop will provide some general discussion about how the different technology environments elicit different responses from various user groups and, using Twitter as a microcosm, the similarities and differences between approaches will be discussed. The legalities concerning social media policies and the magic of paying attention to target audiences will also be explored.

This workshop discusses various ways to directly engage student patrons for outreach and programming purposes, while eliminating post-secondary administration red-tape that could hinder establishment of this programming. Background: :In order to serve the many member libraries who were faced with the loss of space and the subsequent need to downsize and discard print collections in a very short time, the NN/LM SE/A formed a task force on print retention in the spring of 2010. As observational data has attained new legal status, allowing their integration into open Internet systems, and experimental data continues to be assembled in common and free platforms, state of the art, easy to access data repositories have been designed in Spain. These repositories have removed many obstacles to re-utilization of GIS and other data. European legislation has also made advances in opening biodiversity data, including a European space in the Latin-American grid infrastructure. Open access biomedical repositories attract commercial attention while astronomical, meteorological, and oncological institutions promote data quality and access.
