The Anchor: 2011

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

An open lecture on reclaiming copyright for readers, listeners, and viewers, given by University of Michigan Law professor Jessica Litman.

A system of copyright protection makes little sense unless it is designed to encourage the use and enjoyment of the works it induces authors to create and publishers to disseminate. Litman argues that a clear-eyed examination of copyright's history reveals that solicitude for readers and members of the audience is, in fact, deeply encoded in copyright's DNA. This workshop will help liaison librarians in their scholarly communications and open access outreach efforts with faculty. Workshop will incorporate current videos created by BePress on outreach and discussion of these videos, and teach librarians the process behind adding faculty contributions to DigitalCommons@WSU, focusing on how to conduct permissions and rights checks for faculty publications that may be good additions to DigitalCommons@WSU and the deposit process.

Comparison of the University of Rhode Island Libraries with peer institutions (as defined by the University's Office of Institutional Research). Data used are from the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Statistical Survey from the years 2006-2010. Metrics compared are: total library expenditures, total library materials expenditures, current serials expenditures, monographs expenditures, current serial subscriptions, number of monographic volumes purchased, salaries & wages professional staff, salaries & wages support staff, professional staff (fte), support staff (fte), and total library materials resource expenditures per student FTE.

Nixon's recent research has focused on patron driven acquisitions (PDA). Purdue Libraries was an earlier initiator in buying, instead of borrowing, books patrons requested through interlibrary loan. After ten years of the PDA service Nixon lead a team that did a major analysis of the purchases. She and two other Purdue librarians edited a special issue of Collection Management on this topic. Success in acquiring print materials through this program has led the library to initiate a PDA electronic book acquisition project. In January of 2011, Booth Library was the recipient of a Technology Improvement Award for the purchase of a new Web server. With a new enterprise-class server, it was possible to have several virtual machines running on one physical server. Using virtualization, we are able to run Microsoft Server 2008 and Ubuntu Linux as separate virtual machines on the same computer. The Linux environment is host to several open-source projects, such as call number mapping and Facebook applications.
