What is the next generation of reading? Adult e-book reader ownership doubled in the United States between November 2010 and May 2011 from 6% to 12%, according to a June 2011 Pew Internet & American Life Project survey. Librarians understand the need to provide the material their patrons want via the medium their patrons desire. The e-book medium, however, is relatively new, and it is taking librarians and publishers time and practice to understand how to incorporate e-books into library collections.

Beginning To Track 1000 Datasets From Public Repositories Into The Published Literature, Heather A. Piwowar, Jonathan D. Carlson, Todd J. Vision

Data sharing provides many potential benefits, although the amount of actual data reused is unknown. Here we track the reuse of data from three data repositories (NCBI's Gene Expression Omnibus, PANGAEA, and TreeBASE) by searching for dataset accession number or unique identifier in Google Scholar and using ISI Web of Science to find articles that cited the data collection article. We found that data reuse and data attribution patterns vary across repositories. Data reuse appears to correlate with the number of citations to the data collection article. This dissertation uses case study research to evaluate the impact of Information Technology (IT) on the moderator's role in directing a community of practice (CoP) in its Coalescing stage of development. Ten CoPs were studied.

While each of these CoPs is in a different stage of development, the analysis focuses on the Coalescing stage because it is considered the most critical. A detailed case study of each CoP, including a survey of moderators and members, and interviews with moderators is presented. Games-based learning is an innovative pedagogical strategy employed at all levels of education, and much research in education, psychology, and other disciplines supports its effectiveness in engaging and motivating students, as well as increasing student learning. Many libraries have incorporated games into their collections and program-ming. College and university libraries have begun to use games for information literacy and library instruction. Academic librarians use commercially-produced games, create their own games, and employ game principles and mechanics to enhance their tradi-tional instructional offerings. While there may be impediments to implementing games-based learning for information literacy, the promising benefits of this approach …

The Effect Of Economic Recession On Institutional Support For Tenure-Track Librarians In Arl Institutions, Kelly D. Blessinger, Gina Costello

The objective of this study was to reveal how the national economic recession has affected the nature and extent of support for tenure track librarians at Association of Research Libraries (ARL) member institutions. The authors surveyed 43 ARL Deans and University Librarians to discover the criteria for achieving tenure and the current institutional support for tenure-related activities. All of the responding libraries reported experiencing at least moderate reductions in their overall budgets, with the majority indicating increased workloads for faculty and reductions to monetary support for professional development. Interactivity research lacks consensus regarding the qualities and consequences of interactive experiences. Empirical proof is needed to substantiate the numerous interactivity theories and provide direction for new media technology developers. Specifically, there is a shortage of research on differences between user experiences of interactivity when technology enables communication versus when it does not. In addition, interactivity research is often confounded by the construct of presence.

This study’s objectives included: 1) identifying qualities associated with interactive experiences; 2) disambiguating the constructs of interactivity and presence; and 3) developing a measure of perceived interactivity for VW research. The experimental design measured perceived …

Provides an overview of a source evaluation lesson plan that utilizes video/multimedia of commercials, public service announcements, and ad campaigns. The lesson promotes media literacy by focusing on media and social influences of this media, how values and points of view are included or excluded, and in what ways language, audio, and visuals influence beliefs and behaviors.
