Targeted Critical Thinking: Effective Use Of Critical Thinking Activities, Calvin Wang Mar 2011

Targeted Critical Thinking: Effective Use Of Critical Thinking Activities, Calvin Wang

Library Faculty Scholarship

Library instruction can be primed for failure if participants believe librarians have a canned answer for every research effort. Instruction must take place with an understanding of the unique needs of first-year classes and assignments relative to higher level classes and their assignments. Efforts to incorporate critical thinking exercises in suboptimal research efforts contribute to instruction-fatigue for students and librarians. This workshop will embrace the K-12 strategy of identifying the scope and sequence ideal for teaching library research techniques. It will consider appropriate courses and assignments in which to apply critical thinking activities and present ideas for optimizing assignments. Participants will …

From Embedded To Integrated: Digital Information Literacy And New Teaching Models For Academic Librarians, Rob Morrison, Larissa Garcia Mar 2011

From Embedded To Integrated: Digital Information Literacy And New Teaching Models For Academic Librarians, Rob Morrison, Larissa Garcia

Faculty Publications

This paper describes our experience launching LIBR 200, moving beyond traditional library instruction to integrating digital information literacy into the larger curriculum. By creating a credit course that focuses on digital information literacy, the NLU Library was able to fill a void in the general education curriculum, thus making it possible for LIBR 200 to be included in undergraduate degree programs. Because librarians are faculty and have fostered a positive and collaborative reputation throughout the University, the library faculty role has evolved to include participation in program development and the development and teaching of library credit courses in order to …

Why Libraries Are Relevant In The Digital Age, Henry Rible Mar 2011

Why Libraries Are Relevant In The Digital Age, Henry Rible

Continuing Education (CAPSTONE)

The libraries of the United States are integral and valued parts of the communities and institutions they serve. There are a number of kinds of libraries commonplace in the United States, including public, school, college and university, legal, and research libraries, each of which has a constituency they serve. The libraries with which people have the greatest familiarity and the two types they utilize on the most frequent basis are the public libraries, those which primarily serve municipalities, and school libraries, those which serve kindergarten through twelfth grade schools. It is upon these two that this paper places its greatest …

Break On Through To The Other Side: The Library And Linked Data, F. Tim Knight

This article discusses the barriers that exist between library bibliographic data and other data available on the World Wide Web. The isolation of this bibliographic data is a problem that impacts on the successful integration of the library catalogue into the potential semantic Web of the future. It will look at two available data models for bibliographic data and introduces the Resource Description Framework (RDF) which has emerged as the preferred data model for enabling linked data on the Web. The article concludes with a brief look at some current activities related to linked data that are occurring as part …

In this article the author addresses various aspects regarding the feasibility of library lending services for electronic books (e-books). She suggests that several conditions make e-books difficult to incorporate into library collections, particularly at academic libraries. Topics include lack of interoperability among e-book reader formats, compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), and digital rights management of e-books by publishers and vendors.

Going 3d, Frances E. Rice

Roesch Library Faculty Presentations

In addition to published materials, academic libraries often curate special collections. Some of these collections contain three‐dimensional objects like statues, sports memorabilia, art, and cultural objects. This poster session will demonstrate how one library has used 360 degree digital imaging to provide access to such objects, including the equipment and process used to generate animated flash files, and ways to assess user satisfaction. At this library space is at a premium. 3D objects cannot be stored in a single location; instead, they are stored across campus in boxes, filing cabinets, vaults, shelves, and closets. This causes a delay of two …

Better…Stronger…Faster: Improving Your Skills Through Self-Assessment, Michael Priehs Mar 2011

Better…Stronger…Faster: Improving Your Skills Through Self-Assessment, Michael Priehs

Library Scholarly Publications

As interlibrary loan librarians and paraprofessionals work to improve the speed, convenience, and visibility of the services we provide, we may often overlook the importance of our own involvement in the process. Taking an introspective look at your role and overall professional knowledge, with the intent to sharpen and enhance the services provided, can improve workflow and provide opportunities to promote interlibrary loan services to our institutions. Literature discusses the assessment of services and users, but has focused less on the professional’s skills. Assessing your knowledge of your library’s collection, measuring your processing times, and knowing where to find answers …

Critical Collaborations: An Information Literacy Across The Curriculum Project, Sheila Beck, Devin Mckay

Publications and Research

The article focuses on a collaborative project aimed at investigating the effect of integrating four classroom assignments from different disciplines with critical thinking skills. Entitled "Collaboration and Information: Critical Thinking Skills Across Curriculum," the different goals of the project include having the students understand what information is, the type of information needed and its appropriateness, and the application of research skills using critical thinking. In this study, it has been demonstrated that the greater the breadth and depth of responses to the scenario, the greater the research process skills.
