The Anchor, Volume 124.22: April 20, 2011, Hope College Apr 2011

The Anchor, Volume 124.22: April 20, 2011, Hope College

The Anchor: 2011

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Beyond The Basics: How Can Librarians Teach What We Truly Care About?, Christopher Sweet Apr 2011

Beyond The Basics: How Can Librarians Teach What We Truly Care About?, Christopher Sweet

Scholarly Publications

Most research instruction sessions do very little in the way of inspiring creativity among students. The great majority of these sessions engage students only at the lower levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy (Remembering and Understanding). This often occurs by necessity- someone has to teach students research basics before they can ever hope to use research as part of a creative process. At the same time, we didn’t become librarians because we were passionate about Boolean operators! How can librarians move beyond the basics and begin to teach big-picture information literacy concepts such as intellectual freedom, critical thinking, and ethical use of …

Adaptation Of The Nevada Climate Change Data Portal Web Interface To Small-Screen Mobile Devices, Tsvetan Komarov Apr 2011

Adaptation Of The Nevada Climate Change Data Portal Web Interface To Small-Screen Mobile Devices, Tsvetan Komarov

Festival of Communities: UG Symposium (Posters)

Robust and convenient access to the Nevada Climate Change Data Portal is vital for the project’s success, because of the researchers’ need to gather and analyze large volumes of data with minimal effort. However, the current version of the data portal web interface is not optimized for small-screen mobile devices such as mobile phones, PDAs, iPads, NetBooks, and others. The proposed research will address this issue by exploring the current methods for creating a client-aware web interface adaptable to the variety of small-screen devices, designing and implementing the most appropriate solution, and finally, user testing of the implemented solution.

Ebook Management With Millennium: Workflows, Statistics, And Load Tables, Rae Ann Stahl, Carole Correa-Morris

Faculty and Staff Publications

In order to manage the increase in e-book purchases and variety of suppliers, the SJSU Technical Services Department developed an e-book workflow that modeled, where possible, our print acquisitions workflow. This session will present our current e-book workflow, our use of unique Millennium load tables, and our efforts to add e-book statistics and license agreements to Millennium’s ERM module.

Designing And Preserving Special Collections, Sharon Bradley, Suzanne R. Graham Apr 2011

Designing And Preserving Special Collections, Sharon Bradley, Suzanne R. Graham

Presentations

Our collections' unique holdings can make the greatest impact to scholarship, and yet our special collections often suffer from a lack of staff expertise to preserve and describe unusual formats. An experienced special collections cataloger and a special collections librarian will share the basics of standards-based cataloging and preservation of these formats. Program will include hands-on practice with creating a metadata record for a manuscript and a photograph collection (with attention paid to perceived impact of RDA).

Blogging the Library

I never thought I would feel this comfortable at the desk. At the end of last week a lot of librarians weren't in the building so I picked up one of their shifts. In January I never would have thought I could just volunteer for that. The idea of being at the desk alone was pretty scary, so the thought of being at the desk when there were very few librarians even in the building would have been flat out terrifying. But it was fine! There weren't too many questions because it was the lunch shift on Friday so for …

7 Things You Should Know About The Modern Learning Commons, Joan Lippincott, Stacey Greenwell Apr 2011

7 Things You Should Know About The Modern Learning Commons, Joan Lippincott, Stacey Greenwell

Library Faculty and Staff Publications

The learning commons, sometimes called an "information commons," has evolved from a combination library and computer lab into a full-service learning, research, and project space. As a place where students can meet, talk, study, and use "borrowed" equipment, the learning commons brings together the functions of libraries, labs, lounges, and seminar areas in a single community gathering place. The cost of a learning commons can be an obstacle, but for institutions that invest in a sophisticated learning commons, the new and expanded partnerships across disciplines facilitate and promote greater levels of collaboration. The commons invites students to devise their own …

Surviving To Thriving: Advancing The Institutional Mission, Brinley Franklin Apr 2011

Surviving To Thriving: Advancing The Institutional Mission, Brinley Franklin

Published Works

Academic research libraries can employ several approaches to advance the institutional mission.  First, libraries can shift from goals focused on collections and traditional library services and instead align with their campus academic plan and an emphasis on supporting the institution’s strategic initiatives.  A second approach is for libraries to modify their organizational structures from being function-based on the tasks that traditional libraries performed (e.g., public services, technical services, collection development) and move instead toward organizational units that directly support their university’s missions (e.g., undergraduate education; graduate and professional education; research, scholarship, and creative activity; and public engagement).  The key is …

Blogging the Library

Before I dedicate the rest of my blog entries to my work with CONTENTdm, I have one more exciting piece of news regarding the manuscript collection I processed... the finding aid for MS-118 Wikoff has been digitized and is now available on the Special Collections website! Here's the link! The photo to the right serves as the cover page to my completed finding aid. The three images in the center of my finding aid are photocopies of the three articles Mr. Wikoff published in the Gettysburg magazine based on the alumni letters that comprise the manuscript collection.
