The system works within the catalog to show the location of materials, as well as provides a web form for use at the reference desk. Developed using PHP and MySQL, it requires only minimal effort to update using a unique call number overlay mechanism. In addition to mapping shelved materials, the system provides information for any of the over three hundred collections held by the WSU Libraries. Patrons can do more than just locate a book …

The learning outcomes associated with information literacy relate to and incorporate many of the learning outcomes in all of these skill clusters. Participants in this session will address how these information literacy and related learning outcomes can be mapped into student learning experiences at three levels: in an individual course, in an academic sequence …

Delta Project On Postsecondary Costs, Productivity, And Accountability: A Campus Perspective – University Of Nevada, Las Vegas, Patricia A. Iannuzzi

Library Faculty Presentations

I will start by pointing out that I don’t completely agree with Director Wellman’s conclusions that it’s a horrible state of affairs when investments from tuition and state sources are misdirected to support non‐instruction infrastructure. As a research university with aspirations of enhancing its research agenda, in a state that desperately needs that research UNLV expects to grow those support services in order to grow its research initiatives, and thereby contribute in meaningful ways to the reinvention of the Nevada economy – one sorely hampered by its single industry focus. The Delta Project data calls into question the relationship of …

A Call To Arms, Mark Y. Herring Jun 2010

A Call To Arms, Mark Y. Herring

Dacus Library Faculty Publications

This month I’m using my column to issue a call to arms. No, it isn’t a call to arms for war, though it is going to be battle. It is a call to professional librarians who are interested in their jobs lasting more than a few more years. That sounds a bit hysterical but I don’t mean for it to. Yet is it hyperbolic? I don’t think so. We need to rethink, recast, redefine, and refresh our professional métier. I think the last twenty-four months make it imperative that we do so now

Improving Undergraduate Chemistry Student Scientific Writing Through Peer Review, Mary Lou Baker Jones

University Libraries' Staff Publications

Wright State University’s Chemical Literature and Composition course is team-taught by a Chemistry Professor and the Chemistry Librarian. Course requirements include writing a research paper. Many of our undergraduate students come to us with a very limited understanding of the process of writing scientific literature. To improve the students’ writing quality and their familiarity with scientific journal literature, we have invited a University Writing Instructor to collaborate with us in teaching the students to use peer review. Each student reviews two other students’ papers and receives reviews from two fellow students. Incorporating this peer review process into an already crowded …

Mba Student Library Collaboration: Progress And Pitfalls., Colleen Hailey, Jill Dixon

Library Scholarship

In 2008, four accounting students taking a graduate marketing class contacted the business and engineering librarians at the Binghamton University (BU) Libraries about collaborating on a market research project. We wholeheartedly agreed — at once recognizing the unique benefits of gaining patron feedback on library resources and services from the student perspective. The project was also an excellent opportunity to support the School of Management and business students with their graduate course work.

With the Libraries serving as their marketing client, the accounting students created a library survey to provide a “better understanding of the typical user and his/her perceptions …
