Effects Of Information And Communication Technology On Research And Development Activities: The Fiiro Experience, O.O. Onilude, O.R. Apampa

This paper reports on a study which assessed the effects of information and communication technology (ICT) on research and development activities at the Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi (FIIRO). The research focused on the use of computers, application software, and the Internet by all cadres of staff at the Institute. A thematic analysis highlighted the current state of ICT applications, level of literacy, and problems and challenges encountered in the application and use of ICTs. The study revealed a need to train members of staff in ICT. Infrastructure such as power supply and Internet connectivity need to be improved.

Electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) are being adopted by more and more universities. As a primary source of information, theses and dissertations are particularly useful to researchers, but most languish in obscurity in university libraries and archives. The best way to make use of theses and dissertations is through electronic publication and online access. This paper looks at the status of use and adoption of ETDs in various different parts of the world, describes the history and development of ETDs, key issues governing ETD projects, potential merits of ETDs for effective teaching and research, and ETD initiatives in India.

The effect of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Nigerian public libraries was explored with a survey. The findings show that ICT improves public library services, but most libraries have not been automated and a considerable number of staff and users are not ICT-literate.

This paper examines the role of Nigerian private university libraries in supporting research. The case study approach was used for the study and a questionnaire was used to collect data from 120 respondents. Data were analyzed using percentage and graphical analysis. The major findings are that: research impacts positively on community development, research output impacts the recognition and ranking of universities, the library impacts positively on research, and library ICT impacts on the quality of research. Although librarians have traditionally defended intellectual freedom, the American Library Association (ALA) tends to treat it as a local management issue. As librarianship has become increasingly technical defense of intellectual freedom has diminished. Censorship generates self-censorship and demonstrates a subservient relation to authority detrimental to collection development. Using instances from his professional life, the author argues that censorship infantilizes patrons, discourages critical thinking, and is counterproductive to institutions of higher learning.

Long before the emergence of the World Wide Web, librarians had a long tradition of collecting and classifying physical materials. Influenced by these activities, information literacy instruction has defined and taught sources as objects of similar content and/or format. Because of their ability to organize information for easy retrieval, such definitions are helpful from a practical standpoint. Unfortunately, they do little to account for a source's role as a communicative act shared within and between communities. To expand our definition we must look to Genre Theory. Genre Theory examines how groups develop language—genres--to respond to recurrent, rhetorical situations. Seen as …

Supervision Of Special Collections In Federal And State University Libraries In Nigeria, R.I. Echezona

This study assessed the supervisory styles in special collections in federal and state university libraries in Nigeria. Descriptive survey design was adopted with purposive sampling to obtain a sample of 178 librarians and library officers in 12 federal and state university libraries in Nigeria. A questionnaire was used in the collection of data. Mean scores and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions. The findings showed that approaches to supervision include routine checks of subordinates, periodic evaluation of stock, regular meeting with staff, reprimanding of erring staff, and a liberal supervisory style.

The Anchor: 2010

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Marquette University has undertaken a vital and varied wellness initiative that may provide useful examples for other institutions. In May 2009 the Wellness Implementation Committee, consisting of twenty-six faculty, staff and administrators, was created to plan and implement wellness programming for Marquette employees. Guided by the Creating Well Workplaces program of the Wellness Council of America (WELCOA), we set the goal of being designated a Well Workplace and contributing to Milwaukee’s efforts to be designated a Well City. Why Purchase When You Can Repurpose? Using Crosswalks To Enhance User Access, Teressa M. Keenan

The Mansfield Library subscribes to the Readex database U.S. Congressional Serial Set, 1817-1994 (full-text historic reports of Congress and federal agencies). Given the option of purchasing MARC records for all 262,000 publications in the Serial Set or making use of free access to simple Dublin Core records provided by Readex, the library opted to repurpose the free metadata. The process that the Mansfield Library used to obtain the Dublin Core records is described, including the procedures for crosswalking the metadata to MARC and batch loading the bibliographic records complete with holdings information to the local catalog.
