Collecting Legacy Corpora From Social Science Research For Text Mining Evaluation, Bei Yu, Min-Chun Ku

In this poster we describe a pilot study of searching social science literature for legacy corpora to evaluate text mining algorithms. The new emerging field of computational social science demands large amount of social science data to train and evaluate computational models. We argue that the legacy corpora that were annotated by social science researchers through traditional Qualitative Data Analysis (QDA) are ideal data sets to evaluate text mining methods, such as text categorization and clustering. As a pilot study, we searched articles that involve content analysis and discourse analysis in leading communication journals, and then contacted the authors regarding …

Over the past ten years, Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library has hosted multiple Cunningham Fellows, as well as several other international librarians. Each experience was structured to address the needs and interests of the visiting librarian, but also provided valuable information and perspective for the hosting library staff. This poster presentation is a brief overview of the international relationship between Cunningham Fellows and the Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library.

This article presents the editor's reflections on the journal in 2010 and his role in it. The article discusses changes in the periodical from 2008 to 2010 related to its title and cover design, electronic format, and editorial content. The journal also discusses the Library Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA) and how the publication aligns itself with the organization's strategies and interests. Information is also provided on why the editor is leaving his position and how the publication is integrating online resources and web-based features.

[manuscript] In this issue of Library Technology Reports, authors Cindi Trainor and Jason Price revisit OpenURL and library linking. The OpenURL framework for context-sensitive linking has been in use for a decade, during which library collections and users' behaviors have undergone radical change. This report examines how libraries can make use of web usability principles and data analysis to improve their local resolver installations and looks to the wider web for what the future of this integral library technology might hold.

Loyola University Libraries propose to develop a suite of services, systems, and online tools for the purpose of collecting, storing, organizing, and providing access to digital assets produced by Loyola University related to research, teaching, and learning. Functioning collectively as a “digital repository,” these initiatives will work in concert to facilitate a wide range of scholarly and archival activities, including content creation, collaboration, resource sharing, author rights management, digitization, preservation, and access by a global academic audience. Although he creates impeccable fine bindings that have won international awards, Peter Verheyen's huge contribution to the field of book art has little to do with making or conserving physical books. His magum opus is the Book Arts Web (philobiblon.com), the main location on the Internet for book art information and resources, from online exhibitions to tutorials, opportunities, blogs, and reference materials.

ACRL Board of Directors approved the current ACRL Standards for Libraries in Higher Education in June 2004. In 2009, then-ACRL President Lori Goetsch charged a task force to review and revise these important standards.

To inform their work, the task force surveyed academic library directors in spring 2010 on their use of, and need for, the standards. This report is a snapshot of the results.

Bibliotherapy, defined most basically, is helping with books (Hynes & Hynes-Berry, 1994). Derived from the Greek words meaning book and therapy, bibliotherapy goals fall usefully into two categories. Clinical bibliotherapy, using books to facilitate specified therapeutic goals with those experiencing significant emotional or behavioral problems, involves trained health and mental health professionals such as psychologists, counselors, psychiatric nurses, or social workers. Developmental bibliotherapy, using books to address situational, transitional, and normal developmental issues, can be implemented by others, like educators or librarians, who work in helping roles.
