Connecting Researchers With Funding Opportunities: A Joint Effort Of The Libraries And The University Research Office, Leslie M. Delserone, Julia A. Kelly, Jody L. Kempf

In early 2007, staff from the University of Minnesota Libraries and the Office of the Vice President for Re-search began a collaboration to present a workshop covering grant resources. The session introduced fa-culty, staff, and graduate students to four key databases of external granting opportunities as well as intramural funding sources. We explain the context, development, and implementation of this ongoing, popular workshop; mention extensions of the workshop effort; and hope to inspire fellow librarians to identify and explore routes to broad institutional engagement.

The American Petroleum Institute, in cooperation with the National Bureau of Standards, initiated its Research Project 44 in 1942. The project was designed to provide reliable information on the thermodynamic and thermophysical properties of selected hydrocarbons and their sulfur-containing derivatives. This information was needed to support the massive demand for fuel, lubricants, and other petroleum products during World War II. The tables containing this information were originally produced in loose-leaf form for refineries, chemical companies, and universities. The tables were subsequently issued in book form in 1948. For most of their development as disciplines, the social sciences were fragmented, often contested subjects in academia. Their fields of concern – humanity, society, and human relationships with the environment – placed them in both the humanities and natural sciences camps of the academic world. Indeed, specializations in the broader field of the social sciences did not occur until the Twentieth century, causing a splinter of subject areas that refused to have anything to do with one another. Practitioners in information literacy and library instruction have outed the benefits of collaborative learning for years. Students learn more when they work together to develop critical research skills. Wikis have added a new dimension to the process of collaborative learning. This presentation demonstrated how quickly and easily librarians can create classroom assignments and engage students, generate immediate results, promote collaboration, and reinforce learning objectives all through the use of a wiki.

This article provides an overview of a collaborative project of the University of Oregon Libraries, Infographics Lab, and an art history professor to create a virtual research guide, entitled, “Archaeology and Landscape in the Altai Mountains of Mongolia.” Offering accompanying digital image archives, this project serves as a model for humanities data preservation and presents a collaborative strategy for promoting faculty research output in a new media environment. This article describes the authors interactions with Russian archivists, librarians, and historians during a 2008 delegation visit to Saratov Province, the state of archival holdings and special collections in the Saratov area, and preliminary discussions regarding proposed collaborative digitization and academic research projects. A reciprocal visit by Russian and Ukrainian colleagues the following year to participate in the Inaugural Conference on German-Russian Studies is also detailed. In 2008, the University of Nevada, Reno Library moved into a new building, the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center. As part of this move, approximately half of the library’s print collections were moved into the building’s automated storage and retrieval system; a substantial portion of these materials were federal depository materials. This case study describes how cataloging and government documents staff at the University of Nevada, Reno collaborated to achieve intellectual and physical control over a huge, largely uncataloged government documents collection destined for automated storage. Shipping materials via a library courier service is much cheaper than shipping via the U.S. Postal Service. Most library delivery services are regional or state-based. This article illustrates how two separate services combined to develop the multi-state courier system COKAMO. COKAMO is moving tens of thousands of items between three states at a fraction of U.S. Postal Service rates. Within one year of implementing the system, over 57,000 items have been shipped, creating savings of over $215,000 for participating libraries. Significant changes in the behavior of interlibrary loan staff throughout the region are evidenced in statistics which show an increase …

Improving Electronic Reserve Services: A Collaborative Effort, Xiaohua (Cindy) Li, David Demers

To improve the efficiency of Ryan-Matura Library's electronic reserve (e-reserve) service, the staff of the library and the Office of Instructional Technology at Sacred Heart University codeveloped and implemented a system that streamlined the request and delivery of e-reserves for faculty and students. This system utilizes the institution's integrated course/content management system (Blackboard) along with a custom-built Web application that facilitates the request, retrieval, digitization, and delivery of e-reserve materials directly to students within their Blackboard courses.

Burn After Viewing, Or, Fire In The Vaults: Nitrate Decomposition And Combustibility, Heather M. Heckman

Although the fire risks associated with nitrate film stock are widely known, understanding of the relationship between nitrate decomposition and combustibility remains weak. This paper surveys the contradictory descriptions of decomposition and combustibility of motion picture film in current archival and safety literature, evaluates their sources, and compares them to descriptions by image stability researchers and chemists. Throughout, the author argues that the dialogue among the archival, safety, and scientific communities is inadequate and that no community has satisfactorily established the evolution of flammability as nitrate decomposes. My Own Private Library: A Peek Inside The Personal Library Of A Librarian, Jason Puckett

The author describes the contents of his own private library. He reportedly uses a podcast media player for listening to audio files of authors like science fiction and nonfiction writer Cory Doctorow and fantasy writer Mur Lafferty. It is stated that Podiobooks uses Really Simple Syndication (RSS) which enables setting up of automatically delivered chapters at regular intervals and that Librovox functions as an online library of audiobooks in the public domain.
