Forsyth's Hampton Park Library To Open Early In 2010

The article features the opening of the Forsyth County Public Library branch in Hampton Park, southern Forsyth County, Georgia in February 2010. The 23,500 square-foot building will reportedly house a collection of 60,000 items including books, children's and adult educational digital video discs (DVDs), music compact discs (CDs) and multimedia programs. It is stated that the facility is environment friendly and has programmable thermostats for heating and cooling control.

Tifton Library Comes Home After Three-Year Renovation

The article features the rededication of the Tifton-Tift County Public Library in Georgia on November 1, 2009 after three years of renovation. A new building was reportedly built up and 1,830 square feet of space was added. It is stated that the old circular desk was divided for children's use and for reference and that the library features a new radio frequency identification system (RFID) system for circulation functions and a board room with Internet, kitchenette and restrooms.

Cherokee Regional Library System Enters Building Mode

The article features the plan for building the Lafayette-Walker County Public Library in Georgia in which citizens were consulted. It is stated that a gap exists in programming and services for the young adult population and that a coffee shop is welcomed within the library. The design will reportedly focus on the increase of programming areas, the reforming of shelving and public reading areas and the expansion of teen and children's spaces.

Moultrie Tech To Renovate, Add Library

The article features the renovation plan for Moultrie Technical College's Turner County Campus in Georgia. The present break room will reportedly be reformed into areas for coffee break and vending systems and a computer-equipped library. It is stated that books on business administrative technology, early childhood care and education and industrial electrical construction will be made available in the library to students and community members.

Few libraries are strangers to the concept of library consortia – institutional groups that collaborate to purchase software, systems, electronic resources, or other information‐sharing products and services. Most academic libraries are members of at least one consortium, and many belong to multiple consortia. However, consortia vary widely in the services they offer and in how they are structured. This project, carried out in the fall of 2009, focused on a review of academic library consortia that:

(A) Included two‐year colleges, either exclusively or as part of a joint consortial arrangement with four‐year colleges and universities; and

Of the steps in implementing an information commons, one of the most important is the planning phase. In order for the planning and implementation to be a success, buy-in and support from library users and administrators is essential. The result of the planning process is a detailed planning document which will influence the success of the commons. The document should include plans for policy changes, space for the commons, staffing issues, and assessments, both before and after implementation. Even with all the planning completed, an evaluation of the viability of and desirability for a commons should determine whether a commons …

Information and communication technologies (ICTs) have been championed by the United Nations and others as one of the key media to open up socio-economic opportunities for disadvantaged populations. Studies lead us to believe that after being introduced to ICTs, users' information behavior changes, enabling them to benefit from socio-economic opportunities. Using Wilson's (1997) Revised General Model of Information Behavior (Model), the dissertation explored the role of cell phones - the fastest spreading information and communication technology (ICT) - in shaping the information behavior of disadvantaged population, with its implications on socio-economic opportunities.

The emergence of product certifications such as "organic," "fair trade" and "shade grown" has gone far to introduce non-price related product information back into the consumer decision making process thereby reducing information asymmetries and improving market outcomes. Recently, these certifications have been supplemented by the emergence of several web-based consumer decision support systems that are designed to disseminate non-price product information to consumers. Like printed product labels, these new web-based systems present the same informational cues to each consumer regardless of his or her preference for the information and they rate products with fixed weights that are not customized to …

Computational natural language understanding and generation have been a goal of artificial intelligence since McCarthy, Minsky, Rochester and Shannon first proposed to spend the summer of 1956 studying this and related problems. Although statistical approaches dominate current natural language applications, two current research trends bring renewed focus on this goal. The nascent field of artificial general intelligence (AGI) seeks to evolve intelligent agents whose multi-subagent architectures are motivated by neuroscience insights into the modular functional structure of the brain and by cognitive science insights into human learning processes. The fight for equal rights for women may be over a hundred years old, but in medical research, women have only been treated equally since the 1990s. That is also the time that evidence-based women’s health handbooks started to appear. Up to that point, most studies only included recommendations for women that had been deduced from analyses of men’s responses to clinical trials.This article reviews four new publications on women’s health: two that were written for health professionals and two for consumers.
