I. History: While rare books and manuscripts have been acquired since the University of Nebraska was founded, it was not until the 1970s that a concerted effort was made to create a separate Rare Books and Special Collections unit. During the 1970s, librarians identified rare books or special collections within the existing general collections, identified new space for these materials, cataloged them, created collection development criteria, and began providing services through the assignment of the first full-time special collections librarian. One role for the special collections librarian was to seek funding through donations for continued development of the special collections. …

Information Takeout And Delivery: A Case Study Exploring Different Library Service Delivery Models, Mark Aaron Polger

This article explores the transformation from the traditional service delivery model of a hospital library (patrons come to the library to request materials and information) to a more dynamic service delivery model where library staff deliver all services on clinical floors, participate in clinical rounds, and teach in staff and physician offices. This model is similar to the “informationist role.” The article discusses the “Information Takeout and Delivery Service” model and includes usage statistics comparing 2005 to 2008. The article explores the last 10 years of literature relating to Davidoff and Florance’s informationist concept. An informationist provides many of the same services as a medical librarian, is a permanent member of the clinical team, and resides on the clinical floors. The author explores the job functions of the informationist and examines whether this service has come to fruition. The author argues that the informationist service can only be fully realized in large academic health sciences libraries, large teaching hospitals, and medical research organizations such as the National Institutes of Health. Every morning I drive to work past Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, a highly regarded college in the northeast for engineers, architects, mathematicians, and a predictable array of geeks and techno-nerds as well as a couple of what my daughter would term ―hot college kids.‖ What fascinates me during my drive, beyond the people-watching opportunities, is a banner displayed on the overpass linking the two sides of campus that poses one simple question to the students: ―Why not change the world?‖

Identifying and evaluating the oldest published content held by the library using a set of transfer criteria provided a means to systematically evaluate and, if necessary, move rare or unusual content into a more secure location. The process enabled us to correct cataloging errors, identify and address items with condition issues, be familiar with the library's unique holdings and finally, to identify and add content distinctly associated with EMU's history to the University Archives and Special Collections.

Scribal Practice In The Beowulf Manuscript, Richard W. Clement

There was a time, not too long ago, when we thought we knew a great deal more about Beowulf than we do now. We knew that the poem, originally a work of oral composition, had first been written down in the seventh century and had been copied repeatedly until the final copy (our extant manuscript: British Library, Cotton, Vitellius, A.XV, ff. 94-209) was made sometime around 1000 AD. That particular manuscript, now known as the Nowell Codex, was the product of a single scriptorium, the work of two scribes, who included Beowulf in a single multi-text volume which emphasized monsters. …

The global recession has wrought havoc on the budgets of libraries worldwide, forcing administrators to reassess priorities and change direction midcourse. Privately funded academic libraries which typically rely heavily on large endowments have not been exempt and in fact have probably been hit the hardest. The challenges encountered by this long drawn financial crisis have ultimately provided opportunities to reassess priorities and conduct business more efficiently.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide a case study of the selection process used to select the ReSearcher Suite, and its implementation including an outline of why and how the suite was implemented at the Library in the Institute of Technology in Tallaght.

Design/methodology/approach – Case study – single site.

Findings – The Simon Frasier University (SFU) hosted ReSearcher Suite (with support) provides an open source solution for open URL linking integrated with inter-library loan submission, federated searching, knowledge base, coverage data, and A-Z listings for journals and databases. 'Not Yet Ready': Australian University Libraries And Carnegie Corporation Philanthropy, 1935-1945, Michael J. Birkner

In recent years the Carnegie Corporation's influence on Australian library development has been fruitfully examined from many angles, among them its role in promoting free-library movements in the various states. One piece of the story, however, remains mostly in the shadows: the Corporation's initiatives pointing towards modernizing and professionalizing Australian university libraries. Although the Corporation's philanthropic enterprise at the university level yielded mixed results at best, it was not inconsequential. It provided a blueprint for future university-library development in Australia. For a one year period, visitors to the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library, University of South Florida St. Petersburg were observed regarding how they negotiated through the first floor and interacted with the library resources and educational displays. Pedestrian choice research was applied to the library to better understand visitor movement and facilitate greater interaction and engagement. To encourage greater interaction, future library design needs to strategize the high demand services and resources along the natural pathways and to the immediate library entrance, while remote locations should be redesigned as desirable destinations that provide high benefits to students and library visitors.
