Availability And Accessibility Of Icts In The Rural Communities Of Delta State, Nigeria, Monday Obaidjevwe Ogbomo, Esoswo Francisca Ogbomo

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

A study of 128 people in the rural areas of Delta State, Nigeria, showed that only a relatively small number have access to computers, telephones, and radio, while virtually none have Internet access. Since Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are vital for development, the authors recommend aggressive government action to remedy this situation through the creation of infrastructure and educational efforts.

The hiring of several new faculty members in the German Language and Literature Section of the Modern Languages department at the University of Utah resulted in an increased demand for library instruction and technical support. A library subject specialist and a faculty member in German collaborated to teach graduate students about important electronic and print resources in German language and literature.

Exploring The Characteristics Of Opinion Expressions For Political Opinion Classification, Bei Yu, Stefan Kaufmann, Daniel Diermeier

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

Recently there has been increasing interest in constructing general-purpose political opinion classifiers for applications in e-Rulemaking. This problem is generally modeled as a sentiment classification task in a new domain. However, the classification accuracy is not as good as that in other domains such as customer reviews. In this paper, we report the results of a series of experiments designed to explore the characteristics of political opinion expression which might affect the sentiment classification performance. We found that the average sentiment level of Congressional debate is higher than that of neutral news articles, but lower than that of movie reviews. …

This study examines the extent to which the conception and implementation of the public library's educational commitment to adults changed between 1950 and 2006 within the context of the institutional development of the public library and the influences exerted by internal and external forces such as philanthropic organizations, the federal government, the American Library Association, research, the public library planning process, the nontraditional education movement, and changes in public library ideology. In place of a traditional library orientation lecture at Fairfield University, librarians created a choose-your-own-adventure movie for use in the classroom with an audience response system (ARS), allowing students to vote using clickers. The library administration took a risk by sponsoring the project, but the library director believed in her staff and let us run with our ideas. This article provides an introduction to the recreational reading promotion tools at VCU Libraries, including a book review blog, book swap, and bulletin board, as well as the libraries’ involvement with VCU’s summer reading program and Richmond’s citywide “One Community One Book” initiative. Policies and operating procedures will be examined, and these services will be discussed in the context of other libraries’ offerings. We will also discuss why there is a need for these services–which have traditionally been the purview of the public library–on a college campus. Middle school librarians are faced with difficult decisions when choosing books for the middle school library collection because of the students' ages, and involvement from the administration, staff, parents and special interest groups who want to protect children from certain material. Middle school librarians may willingly or unwillingly participate in self-censorship to avoid confrontation. Middle school librarians in New Jersey were surveyed to investigate self-censorship practices. They were asked to share information about their library collection, their library policies and procedures and their thought processes during book selection. The purposes of this study were to (a) determine if LMSs were using titles from a suggested list of titles found in Radical Change with kindergarten to third grade students, (b) determine how LMSs were using books with Radical Change characteristics; and (c) determine if LMSs were not using books with Radical Change characteristics, what were the reasons why they were not using or did not own the books. Librarians at North Carolina State University have developed useful techniques for enhancing information literacy instruction through the systematic incorporation of concepts pertaining to scholarly communication and the economics surrounding information. This presentation describes ways to leveraging such concepts as the Deep Web, Google Scholar, the nature of scholarly communication, and the inflated costs of journal subscriptions to contextualize hands-on instruction in the use of library resources. Assessment data from open-ended quizzes and surveys positively reflects students’ attitudes towards this instruction and exposes the impact of such instruction on student understanding about how research is made available on the Web.

The amount of literature that has been published on virtual reference is staggering, and what has been published on web-based chat and instant messaging (im) as vehicles for reference is voluminous. Although from the quotes above and much of the literature that has been written, you might get the impression that offering reference services via chat/im is a “no-brainer”. As librarians at an art and design library that is also part of a larger institution, we find it necessary to continually come up with new and innovative ways to make our library a welcoming, appealing, interesting and relevant place. Of particular popularity are the buttons we make using images from resources available at the library. For outreach, we give them away at every opportunity, including orientations (while wearing the “librarian” t-shirts we made) and faculty meetings.
