How Scholarly Is Google Scholar? A Comparison Of Google Scholar To Library Databases, Jared L. Howland, Thomas C. Wright, Rebecca A. Boughan

Google Scholar (GS) was released as a beta product in November of 2004. Since then, GS has been scrutinized and questioned by many in academia and the library field. Our objectives in undertaking this study were to determine how scholarly GS is in comparison with traditional library resources and to determine if the scholarliness of materials found in GS varies across disciplines. We found that GS is, on average, 17.6% more scholarly than materials found only in library databases and that there is no statistically significant difference between the scholarliness of materials found in GS across disciplines.

Promoting Public Awareness Of Hiv/Aids In Africa: Follow-Up To A Pilot Study, Helen O. Komolafe-Opadeji

This is a follow-up to a study that looked at reporting on HIV/AIDS in Nigeria in the print media. The pilot study looked at the years 1990-1996 in two major newspapers. The follow-up study looked at 2000-2006 and showed a significantly higher frequency of reporting on the disease. A second part of the study surveyed a small group of senior librarians on their role in disseminating information about HIV/AIDS. Librarians can play a strong role by partnering with government, other organizations and agencies, and with researchers to be both advocates and educators.

Out Googling Google: Rethinking Library Instruction For Online Students, Melissa Koenig

Providing students with library instruction greatly enhances their ability to produce quality research projects, but providing that instruction to students enrolled in online courses can be challenging. While the number of electronic resources available remotely for distance students continues to grow, there is evidence that students still need assistance and instruction on how to identify and evaluate resources for relevance to their own work. This best practice session will look at how DePaul University, with a growing number of online programs, is rethinking how library instruction is delivered to students at a distance.

In 2005 and 2007, usability research studies were conducted in the Coates Library at Trinity University. The purpose of these studies was to determine (a) that participants could complete a number of basic tasks using the web site and (b) that navigability and design of the site facilitated the efficient and timely location of critical information and resources. During the course of these projects, participants were open and forthcoming about their perceptions on site characteristics that were indirectly related to usability. Promoting And Archiving Student Work Through An Institutional Repository: Trinity University, Lasr, And The Digital Commons, Christopher W. Nolan, Jane Costanza

The authors discuss the development of a related set of institutional repositories among several liberal arts college libraries. Contrary to the usual focus on faculty publications, the primary goal of these repositories is the promotion of student work, especially undergraduate theses. Discussion of issues concerning selection of materials and archival policies is included along with practical considerations of workflows and reflections on the advantages and disadvantages of the particular software platform (Digital Commons). Marketing the repository and the subsequent addition of other materials, including e-journals, are discussed in light of ambiguity about its purposes among campus faculty and students.

During the 2006-07 academic terms, a citation analysis of third- and fourth-year student writing was conducted at Trinity University's Elizabeth Huth Coates Library. This study was designed to achieve the following objectives:

Immersive Learning Environments In Parallel Universes: Learning Through Second Life, Jeremy Kemp, Ken Haycock

Academic Technology

Opportunities for more creative and innovative environments for learners continue to develop through distance education. Especially at the post-secondary level, these immersive environments can involve high-end video game technologies to create multi-user virtual worlds that can both replicate and far extend physical classrooms. At San Jose State University's School of Library and Information Science, courses offered in and through Second Life develop both competence and comfort in working with library users. Several useful lessons have also been learned.

Continuing Assessment Of Library Instruction To Undergraduates : A General Education Course Survey Research Project, Kate Zoellner, Sue Samson, Samantha Hines

Mansfield Library Faculty Publications

An assessment project was conducted by the Mansfield Library to evaluate the teaching and content of a research module embedded into a popular undergraduate course, Introduction to Public Speaking, part of the University of Montana’s General Education Requirement. The project aimed to develop internal benchmarks and improve the curricula, as needed. Pre- and post-surveys were developed to assess student research confidence, perceptions of information tools, Web evaluation abilities, and assistance-seeking attitudes. Data from 426 student responses were analyzed using qualitative and quantitative methods. The process, results, and analysis of the project are discussed.

From Sweet Sushi To Classic Cars: Outreach Ideas At The Library Program Showcase, Julie Miller

A new type of program debuted at the 2008 joint Washington and Oregon library associations conference: showcases. These display sessions featured innovative, unusual, or highly successful programs from Oregon and Washington libraries. Each of three showcases had a different theme, including outreach, training and instruction, and innovative and grant-funded programs. As I approached the Hilton's Discovery Gallery on Thursday morning, I knew the outreach showcase hosted by Candise Branum and Gordon Turner was a hit. Colorful displays lined the gallery, which was buzzing with librarians sharing ideas for outreach to user groups.
