The Encore Experience: Using A Third Party Discovery Tool With Aleph And Voyager: Voyager, Tari Keller

During 2007, the University of Kentucky worked with Innovative Interfaces as a development partner to make the Encore product a viable alternative search tool with Voyager. The project involved programming work to develop and automate extract scripts, as well as extensive testing for accuracy and functionality of the interface with the ILS data. This presentation will briefly describe the project and demonstrate Encore with Voyager. The audience will learn general concepts and considerations to keep in mind when working with third party products.

Branching Out: Communication And Collaboration Among Librarians At Multi-Campus Institutions, Tim Bottorff, Robbin Glaser, Andrew Todd, Barbara Alderman

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Communication and collaboration are vital aspects of 21st century librarianship, particularly for librarians in branch and regional settings who are often separated from their system colleagues by both physical distance and administrative structures. For this study, the authors conducted an exploratory survey to examine collaboration, communication, and networking behaviors and perceptions among librarians in multi-campus academic library systems. Results of this investigative study will lead to better understanding of these issues within the profession, suggest possible approaches and solutions for better models of communication and collaboration, and lay the groundwork for future research on these topics.

Florida University Libraries Collection Analysis Project, Anna H. Perrault, Diana Loper

Collection analysis for 26 Florida University Libraries using OCLC Collection Analysis product. The SUL project sponsored by FCLA to analyze the book collections of the Florida university libraries was conducted in 2008 utilizing the OCLC WorldCat Collection Analysis service (WCA). The study findings constitute a baseline assessment of the collections of the Florida university libraries.

Immersive Learning Environments In Parallel Universes: Learning Through Second Life, Ken Haycock, Jeremy Kemp

Opportunities for more creative and innovative environments for learners continue to develop through distance education. Especially at the post-secondary level, these immersive environments can involve high-end video game technologies to create multi-user virtual worlds that can both replicate and far extend physical classrooms. At San Jose State University's School of Library and Information Science, courses offered in and through Second Life develop both competence and comfort in working with library users. Several useful lessons have also been learned.

Evaluation Of The New Jersey Digital Highway, Judy Jeng

The aim of this research is to study the usefulness of the New Jersey Digital Highway (NJDH, www.njdigitalhigh way.org) and its portal structure. The NJDH intends to provide an immersive and user-centered portal for New Jersey history and culture. The research recruited 145 participants and used a Web-based questionnaire that contained three sections: for everyone, for educators, and for curators. The feedback on the usefulness of the NJDH was positive and the portal structure was favorable. The research uncovered several reasons why some collections did not want to or could not participate. The findings also suggested priorities for further development. …

This program focused on tips, techniques, and suggestions to understand, educate, communicate, and negotiate with the C folks in your firm. It is important for librarians to prove their worth in their organization by leveraging their assets and expertise. Several questions were proposed to the panel of experts. Each gave their own insight as to what they have done to address the question in their firm. The C levels are anyone within your organization with a C level title (i.e., CEO, CFO, COO, and CMO).

One-Stop Shopping: Merging Service Points In A University Library, Janet Crane, Jeanne A. Pavy

As libraries change to meet the evolving needs of our patrons, including the development of online services, many libraries are considering consolidating physical service points to maximize staff and better serve the in-house patron. This article describes the planning, implementation, and evaluation process involved in merging the circulation and reference desks at the University of New Orleans Library. The cross-training process is described in detail, and benefits as well as problems experienced are outlined. The authors also provide advice for those considering a merger at their library.

We are still in the early and dynamic stages of applying new price models to both paper and online journals, and the package plan approach offers new conditions for which we need to develop better understandings, appropriate review and decision trees, and adequate support models. This presentation will review current U.S. laws governing dietary supplements and the impact these laws have on the information needs of health care providers and consumers who want to make informed decisions regarding dietary supplement use. MedlinePlus Go Local projects are assisting consumers in this navigation by developing directories of health services that are indexed by geographic area, types of services provided and associated health issues. Librarians affiliated with healthcare systems can play a critical role in promoting their organization and assisting healthcare consumers in locating needed services by assisting Go Local projects in accurately indexing their organization and assisting with keeping the information up-to-date.

Making Sense Of Dietary Supplements: The Dietary Supplements Labels Database, Annette M. Healy

This article describes the Dietary Supplements Labels Database, a new resource from the National Library of Medicine that integrates information from dietary supplement manufacturers, government agencies, and clinical research into an easy-to-use interface. This database contains information on more than 2,000 brands of dietary supplement and more than 800 active ingredients. This resource will greatly assist consumers and health care providers in evaluating the safety, efficacy, and quality of dietary supplements. Features of the resource will be described as well as the browse and search methods used to access the information.

Expert System Design Guide For Lower Classification Roads Over High Pi Clays, Yaqi Wanyan

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This research was focused on low-volume roads over expansive clayey soils in Texas. In spite of the redundant pavement designs recommended and widely used in Texas for roads in high PI clay areas, these pavements often fail prematurely. This failure occurs primarily because of the highly variable properties of the clayey subgrade throughout the year due to moisture fluctuations. The problematic nature of high PI clays, despite the fact that volumetric changes such as heaving are sometime considered in the design, is of concern since they contribute to roughness and longitudinal shrinkage cracking of the road, and as such the …

'Classic Rock Cares' At Parks Memorial.

The article announces that Parks Memorial Library in Richland, Georgia has received musical instruments from the John Entwistle Foundation for a program to promote music education among children. As part of its Check-Out Music program, the library now has an electric guitar, bass guitar, keyboard and amplifiers. The foundation launched an eight city tour known as Classic Rock Cares which was to be the first concert tour designed specifically to raise funds for the foundation's mission of free music education and instruments through the public library system.

Spotlight On Construction: Georgia State's Library Transformation Project Completed, Laura Burtle

The article focuses on the Georgia State University Library Transformation which was funded primarily by student fees. The transformation project allowed the library to renovate space in Libraries North and South. It creates a two-story Learning Commons, build extensive collaborative work spaces, expand technological services and provide better access to research resources. The timeline for the project was projected to be at least 10 years. The goals of the transformation are cited. The Leo A Daly firm designed the project.

Spotlight On Construction: Planning, Communication Are Key In Building New Libraries, Kathryn S. Ames, Greg Heid

The article presents an outline for beginning the process of building new library for the community based on planning principles that will lead to a well-documented and articulated plan for the future. The development of a comprehensive strategic plan of library service is the first step a library system should take. The Public Library Association (PLA) "New Planning for Results," which has been used successfully by many libraries in the U.S. is one example of a successful planning model. The final step in the process is writing a building program.

$1 Million To Purchase Genealogy Materials

The article reports that the Muscogee County Library board of trustees has earmarked $1 million for the purchase of materials for the Genealogy and Local History Department of the Chattahoochee Valley Regional Library System in Georgia. The amount was part of the $6.1 million that remained from a 1999 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax that paid for the construction of the Columbus Public Library (Main Branch). The selection process was overseen by genealogy staff which includes members John Lyles and Ginny Stola.

The article reports on the construction of Georgia Gwinnett College's (GGC) academic library. The current library space is housed on two open floors within the Signature Building. A new, stand-alone building will be needed to meet all of the needs of the new college. GGC established the Library Planning Group in 2006. The new library will incorporate concepts and services that have been successful in other facilities. The goal of the project is that the library will become a learning center for the entire college community.

The article presents a study on measuring library space, use, and preferences at the University of Dayton. The study used a multi-method research approach to be able to analyze the current space use in the library. Data from the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), surveys on study spaces and online library, and a week-long video were investigated to comprehend the student choices in library usage. Results showed that the university students prefer to study at times alone and at times with others. Factors such us interpersonal communication, comfort, and promotion of basic human needs and desires are necessary for …

In recent years, members of the Association of Christian Librarians (ACL) have clearly stated their interest in seeing publishers – especially those with evangelical affiliation – offer electronic book products in formats that are friendly to libraries. This subject has generated conversation at our business meetings and on our listserv. In the summer of 2006, some 100 members of ACL’s Christian Library Consortium purchased a collection of 400 religion-oriented electronic books from NetLibrary®.
