In a 2007 study, librarians at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Library examined freely available online tutorials on medical library Web sites. The team identified tutorial topics, determined common design features, and assessed elements of active learning in library-created tutorials; the team also generated a list of third-party tutorials to which medical libraries link. This article updates the earlier study, describing changes and trends in tutorial content and design on medical libraries’ Web sites; the project team plans to continue to track trends in tutorial development by repeating this study annually.

In recent years, they have implemented an evidence-based management model that involves a cycle of assessment, planning, budgeting, and action. Academic dishonesty or plagiarism is a growing problem in today's digital world. Use of plagiarism detection tools can assist faculty to combat this form of academic dishonesty. In this article, a special emphasis is given to text-matching software called SafeAssignment. The advantages and disadvantages of using automated text matching software's are discussed and analyzed in detail.

Gathered by expert or novice, by individual or organization, a booklist brings together titles for either reader or librarian. Booklists may vary in intent, but all serve one ultimate purpose: to influence what is read. There are two main ideas behind encouraging an individual to read specific books: 1) to shape a better individual for society; and, 2) to encourage the individual to read for pleasure or to fulfill some immediate need. The number of electronic books (e-books) that are available is increasing rapidly. Libraries are acquiring them individually, in large groups, and as part of collections. Off-campus librarians perceive them to be the best solution to the problems and expenses related to loaning and shipping print books to off-campus students. This study looks at the usage of e-books by off-campus students at Central Michigan University (CMU) to see if usage patterns can assist librarians with e-book collection development to support off-campus programs.

This study investigates the application of conceptual terms to images by individuals with various educational and occupational backgrounds. While the inherent complexities of applying terms to images are broadly acknowledged, few studies have addressed the issue of how subject expertise or practical image indexing experience may impact the work. This study begins work in this direction by examining the terms applied to a series of images by individuals with different levels of domain knowledge and practical indexing experience. Introduction: Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) is “the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of patients” (Sackett et al, 1996). This concept of EBM extends the health information professional beyond “identification of literature to involvement in practicing and teaching quality filtering and critical appraisal of the literature” (Scherrer, 1999:324).

The development of ontologies has become an area of considerable research interest over the past number of years. Domain ontologies are often developed to represent a shared understanding that in turn indicates cooperative effort by a user community. However, the structure and form that an ontology takes is predicated both on the approach of the developer and the cooperation of the user community. A shift has taken place in recent years from the use of highly specialised and expressive ontologies to simpler knowledge models, progressively developed by community contribution. The article reports on the expansion and renovation of Georgia Southern University's Henderson Library. The Zach S. Henderson Library has been the hub of academic life at Georgia Southern University for more than 30 years. The library has been the focus of an extensive expansion and renovation to help meet the needs of the university's growing student body. The first phase of the $22.75 million project opened on October 1, 2006. The original building included 109,515 square feet of space. Spotlight On Construction: Residents Welcome Henry County’S New Fairview Branch

The article reveals that area residents joined Henry County Public Library System employees, board members and numerous local officials on October 21, 2007 to celebrate the grand opening of the system's new Fairview branch in Georgia. Dr. Gordon Baker, chairman of the library board, welcomed and thanked everyone who played a role in making the newest branch a reality. He was joined by commissioners Johnny Basler, Jason Harper and Randy Stamey in the ribbon-cutting ceremony and in unveiling a commemorative bronze plaque by the entrance.

Spotlight On Construction: Hall County Prepares For Opening Of Spout Springs Branch

The article announces that the Spout Springs Branch of the Hall County Library System in Georgia is tentatively scheduled to open in late spring 2008. The budget for the project will total approximately $6 million and will be located in Flowery Branch at the corner of Spout Springs Road and Lake Sterling Boulevard. Pope Partners of Roswell is the architectural firm for the project. Scroggs and Grizzel Contracting Inc. of Gainesville managed the construction. Some special highlights of the facility include a large computer lab and a dedicated storytime room.

Spotlight On Construction: Splost Funding Makes Chickamauga Expansion A Reality, Darla Chambliss

The article reports on the expansion of the Chickamauga Public Library, a branch of the Cherokee Regional Library System in Georgia. It has experienced such growth in programming and book collections that an expansion was greatly needed. The city of Chickamauga, upon the recommendation of John Culpepper, city utilities manager, allocated $100,000 of local special purpose local option sales tax (SPLOST) funds for the expansion and redesign of the library. Library manager Bobbie Abernathy lobbied to bring about public awareness of the expansion need and to secure local and state funding.

The Sounds And The Furies: Managing An Active Library In A New Generation Of Learners, Alan Bernstein

The article reveals that the Odum Library of Valdosta State University in Georgia participated in the LibQual™ survey to assess how well the library is performing in three specific areas: Effect of Service, Library as Place and Information Control. The Library as Place section was of the greatest interest for survey participants. Noise in the library received by far the most comments, most of them negative. The author examines the noise phenomenon in his library, reviewed its history, contemplated his developing attitudes, and analyzed his thoughts about the noise issue.

Dragon NaturallySpeaking is voice-activated software that allows users to communicate with a computer by means of their voice rather than their keyboard. The software’s aim will make anyone who failed Keyboarding 101 giddy with delight. Forgo typing, be it for a document, an e-mail or instant messaging. Dragon listens to your voice and records your composition faster than you can type. After a brief, 15-minute training and tutorial session, during which Dragon listens to the user and he or she learns commands to navigate within Dragon, you are ready to start using the program.
