Telecommuting, which once seemed impractical for librarians, is swiftly becoming a viable option for employees in both technical services and public services. Societal changes such as increased commuting time, rising numbers of dual working-parents, and an explosion of technology that facilitates remote work have fueled both the desirability and the feasibility of alternative work arrangements. Traditionally, librarians have been tethered to a facility either because their public service role demands face-to-face interaction or because they work with materials housed in the building. Problem: The business education literature isn’t accessible.

Research Questions: Which business education periodicals do vital business educators perceive to be more useful? In which databases and/or indices are they found? How much literature is fugitive? What strategies might increase literature accessibility?

Research Method: Delphi technique.

Data Collection Procedures:A survey was distributed to 25 vital business educators.

Results: The Delta Pi Epsilon Journal and the NABTE Review were rated as essential to the profession; nine periodicals were rated as very useful; and six periodicals were rated as useful. Eleven databases and indices were identified as potentially useful.

Teachers are faced not only with standards-based instructional design daily, but with the shortage of certified school library media specialists within their districts. Although images are visual information sources with little or no text associated with them, users still tend to use text to describe images and formulate queries. This is because digital libraries and search engines provide mostly text query options and rely on text annotations for representation and retrieval of the semantic content of images. While the main focus of image research is on indexing and retrieval of individual images, the general topic of image browsing and indexing, and retrieval of groups of images has not been adequately investigated. In planning for a new library that will include a limited number of open stacks, Grand Valley State University librarians were asked to identify what materials should be reserved for the browsable shelves. To accomplish this, librarians considered user behavior by discipline, material types, shelving options and the role of core collections. This paper will discuss these issues as well as differences in how library resources are located and the impact of new discovery tools, such as Innovative Interface's Encore, Bowker’s Syndetics, and Google’s Book Search on redefining browsability. Is Print Reference Dead?, Sue Polanka

This article discusses a survey taken with librarians at the 2007 ALA Annual Conference in regards to their use of print reference materials. The results of the survey suggest a decline in the use of print reference materials by historians, archivists and other researchers but the results also admit that these materials are still being utilized for research. The use of print reference materials was evaluated at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio.

These issues of Bohemia, a magazine published in Havana, Cuba, cover the years 1998 through 2001. A native of West Tampa born December 1903, Rodriguez lived her entire life in West Tampa and Hillsborough County. She passed away at the age of 101 on 11 September 2005. In the late 1990s, she began a dialogue with residents of her ancestral homeland, Cuba. In time, some Cubans began mailing her copies of Bohemia that often included hand-written notes or letters about their lives. Some people also wrote on the covers and inside of the magazines. Generally, this correspondence focused on activities …

Advocates of the practice assert becoming media literate may be the way to take control, and to be better able to identify and control the borders between the real world and the world manufactured by the media. This paper embraces this assertion, and suggests advocating expanding our understandings of media literacy, and creating new strategies for analysis and critique of New Media. Music reference sources continue to evolve, in part because of technological developments and a broadening interest in nonclassical genres, including world music. A few classic works were removed from the list because they are no longer widely available. Others have been subsumed by new print or electronic works. General sources are listed first, followed by sources specific to one or two genres of music. Major categories include blues and jazz, classical, country and gospel, rock and popular, and world music. This chapter explores the possibilities for embedding library services in online course management systems, including the creation of portals to library services for online learners. While technology is always an issue, many of these strategies are decidedly low-tech, but “high-touch,” putting a human face on what was before a faceless edifice. Embedding the library within the course management system streamlines access for online learners, making it more likely that they will utilize library resources and services.

Librarians at Oregon State University (OSU) Libraries used the discussion board features of Blackboard courseware to create an interactive experience for graduate students at a distance who could not attend the on-campus “Literature Review Workshops.” These recently developed workshops have been extremely popular with graduate students across the disciplines and have generated a growing demand from distance education graduate students and faculty to offer similar information online.
