This report is the product of a semester-long study for course 768, Problems in Library and Information Agency Administration at the University of South Carolina’s School of Library and Information Science.

The purpose of this study was to do an in-depth analysis of the Reference Department at the University of South Carolina’s Thomas Cooper Library. A number of methods of factgathering were employed in the performance of this analysis, including:

Reaching Out To The Faculty: Providing Subject-Specific Academic Resources, John Jaeger

Library journals frequently have articles emphasizing the large gulf that seems to exist between academic librarians and teaching faculty members.1 Librarians view this divide as a serious problem and have suggested different strategies to overcome it. Ideas that have received particular prominence include establishing library liaison relationships, providing course-integrated instruction, and encouraging library/faculty research collaboration.

This article focuses primarily on a different method of engaging the faculty. Regularly sending teaching faculty helpful articles and web sites related to their academic disciplines is an easy and effective way to do outreach.

An Unhealthy Case Of Mold, Mary S. Lane

Mold is a serious problem which threatens the well-being of both collections and staff. Preventative maintenance and a good disaster plan are the most effective way of handling mold. However, unforeseen circumstances can infect a library; in which case, librarians must be able to recognize and treat the problem immediately. Finances can affect the manner in which the mold is cleaned. Librarians need to be aware of a variety of options open to them, as well as, a variety of resources upon whom to call in the event of a breakout. Urban planning and librarianship are parallel fields in many ways. Both have theoretical and practical underpinnings driving each discipline; are interdisciplinary in focus; and both professions gather and disseminate information to stakeholders. Essential to the success of each discipline is an engaged user population. The authors use a case study from the Village of Oak Park to examine and reflect upon the effect of the Internet and other technologies in the public's ability to participate in an open planning process. This article discusses challenges in teaching library instruction to large classes and identifies practical ways librarians can use to engage large undergraduate classes in a single session. The authors searched the literature, examined related instructional services web pages, and solicited feedback from instructional academic librarians. Various instructional techniques and activities are described. Discussion also includes areas such as classroom management, technology, risk-taking, and assessment.

While the reference interview remains the vehicle whereby librarians are able to understand the information needs of users in order to assist them, the ways in which the reference interview is conducted have changed with time and technology. This chapter provides a brief history of the evolution of the reference interview, from the face-to-face transaction to the current trends of e-mail and chat software mediated reference interviews, and examines application of these current trends in virtual reference services. This catalog accompanied the exhibit of a range of contemporary fine printing and book arts from North American presses held in the collections of the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections. The department also holds extensive collections of British fine printing from a range of presses such as Strawberry Hill, Kelmscott, Vale, Eragny, Doves, etc. The items in the collections are used to support the teaching mission of the department in book arts and printing history.

The process of consolidating science and technology branch libraries in academic institutions is not new, but with ease of access to electronic resources, and with shrinking budgets and interdisciplinary research the norm, the idea of consolidation has become more attractive in the past decade. Ice Cream Seminars For Graduate Students: Imparting Chemical Information Literacy, Jeremy R. Garritano

This article provides information on a chemical information literacy program designed primarily for new graduate students. The full implementation of this program is discussed, including defining its purpose, topics covered, content presented, methods of marketing, and evaluation. The result is a series of voluntary seminars given biweekly throughout the academic year. Seminars are based either around a particular resource or database or are centered on a topical problem that may be addressed using multiple resources. Evaluations show that graduate students are pleased with the seminars, including content covered and the format. Areas for future development and experimentation are also suggested.

While there is no required chem. literature course for graduate students at Purdue University, a series of library ice cream seminars is offered throughout the semester as an alternative. These seminars are targeted toward new graduate students to help them adjust to the wide variety of library resources now available to them. Each seminar is focused on either a particular resource (SciFinder Scholar, Beilstein, etc.) or a topical theme (patents, citation searching, spectral information, etc.). Librarians at Purdue University are adapting to the implementation of a distributed institutional repository (DIR). Traditionally, a librarian's role in the cycle of scholarly communication has been focused on the products of research: books, articles, dissertations, etc. The DIR is pushing the librarian's role further back in the cycle by assisting and advising researchers on how their data can best be collected, tagged, and stored. In some cases, librarians are even becoming embedded within research groups. Once in the DIR, these data sets and other non-traditional types of information are just as accessible as books and journal articles. The DIR …
