Rural Libraries Of Romania, Libraries And The Information Infrastructure Of Rural Romania, Mary Ann Buhler

In May 2005 faculty and students from Emporia State University and Ball State University visited Lunca Ilvei, a small mountain village in rural Romania, to gather qualitative information on its information infrastructure. Researchers interviewed diverse village residents, taking field notes, documenting field observations, and conducting surveys, all recorded photographically.

This paper focuses on Lunca Ilvei’s libraries and how they fit into the village’s information structure. It reports on the research findings and suggests ways to help village residents address their information needs.

The nature of Christian librarianship requires professionals to remain aware of current political decisions made in our government that directly affect the public’s access to relevant information. Utilizing past literature concerning what it means to practice Christian librarianship and exploring the current administrations’ actions regarding The Freedom of Information Act, the author concludes the Christian library community must educate itself and its patrons and demand honesty and integrity from the government.

American book publishing during the Second World War had to cope with a huge increase in demand for books coupled with scarcity of resources, especially paper rationing imposed by the War Produc- tion Board. Based on research in the Random House archives and focusing on the Modern Library series, this article examines how publishers coped with wartime challenges and opportunities. Ran- dom House grew rapidly during the war. Sales reached the million dollar mark in 1941 and exceeded three million dollars by 1946. The Working Group on Information Literacy (WGIL) was established by the Library Association of Ireland (LAI) in January 2006 to recommend strategies for the development of information skills at both a theoretical and practical level in the Library and Information Services sector in Ireland.

The article describes the concept, methodology, data gathering and study expansion using the Reference Effort Assessment Data (READ) scale developed at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. READ Scale pertains to a tool for recording vital supplemental qualitative statistics gathered when reference librarians assist users with their inquiries or research-related activities. The scale is easy to use compared with the traditional method of gathering reference statistics.

A New Story To Tell: The East Commons At The Georgia Tech Library, Charlie Bennett

The article focuses on the renovations made in the East Commons mixed-used space at the Georgia Tech Library in Atlanta. The area consists of collaborative computer stations, study tables and modular lighting systems. The rearrangements were made to encourage students to use the library more often and to refresh their minds and bodies. The remodeled area features group-study tables where students can turn it into a small theater or presentation space that can seat a maximum of 100 people.

Objective ‐Recent research has yielded several studies helpful for understanding the use of the survey technique in various library environments. Despite this, there has been limited discussion to guide library practitioners preparing survey questions. The aim of this article is to provide practical suggestions for effective questions when designing written surveys.

Methods ‐Advice and important considerations to help guide the process of developing survey questions are drawn from a review of the literature and personal experience.

Since 2001, librarians at Oregon State University's Valley Library have been working to build a "teaching library" supported by a clearly articulated instruction program. From the start, we believed that we needed to assess the teaching library's impact, not only to determine the success or failure of our efforts but also to demonstrate the need for intentional, proactive in formation literacy instruction on our campus. No single assessment tool or method proved adequate to effectively measure student learning happening both inside and outside the library. Democratic Theory In Lis: Toward An Emendation, John Buschman

Despite quantities of popular rhetoric, democratic theory holds an aposiopetic place within library and information science (LIS) in both senses of that word: It is both in a stasis holding to basic ideas outlined 200 years ago and also a silence largely maintained. A review of a number of state-of-the-literature reviews make the case that it has not been systematically explored or applied, and most LIS work elides the questions democratic theory raises. In early 2003, I presented the Provost’s Council and the President’s Cabinet with a plan for the renewal of the University Library. In October, 2003, I provided the students, faculty and staff with a document that made public our plan to revive library organization, infrastructure, collections and services. As calendar year 2006 has come to a close, so has the fourth year of the plan. Now that the fifth year is beginning, it seems appropriate that I report on our progress.
