“Diversity in Libraries: Making It Real” was the topic and the objective of the 2004 National Diversity in Libraries Conference. Intentionally designed to focus on pragmatic, real-world approaches to fostering diversity, the gathering took place May 4-5 at the brand new Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center in Atlanta, Georgia. A record 300 librarians from across the country – and a few from other nations – responded to the call and came together for two days of learning and sharing experiences about this important issue. Academic Librarians And Outreach Beyond The College Campus, Iona R. Malanchuk, Marilyn N. Ocha

The Southeastern Librarian

Although numerous efforts have been made to enhance the literacy skills of children and youth, recent research clearly demonstrates the continuing need to develop and implement additional imaginative programs which lead to an increase in reading and reading comprehension skills. Whereas public and school media librarians have paved the way towards building successful literacy programs, academic librarians should also participate in literacy outreach programs for children and youth in order to help build these skills and encourage lifelong learning. This article addresses why and how academic librarians can help with the nation’s efforts to combat illiteracy.

A very real tension exists between librarians’ attempts to alter their image(s) and the popular press’ and the public’s lingering preference for Marian the Librarian similes. As the Hot Picks @ Your Library calendar indicates, librarians take creative opportunities to dissuade the public of the “image of a dourfaced matron behind a forbidding desk” (Gillespie 2003, A01). But how do librarians attempt to frame their own discussion of the classic caricature? Much of the current literature on information literacy on college and university campuses encourages instructional services librarians and departments to pursue one of two options: either integrate information literacy into the curriculum as a campus-wide initiative, or establish a forcredit information literacy course taught by librarians. For a variety of reasons, instructional programs may not be able to accomplish either of these goals immediately. Perhaps the library does not have the institutional influence to mount a campus-wide program, or maybe the library lacks the needed resources in terms of personnel or instructional facilities. Fast Times In Technical Services: Challenges And Opportunities, Audrey Fenner

Both challenges and opportunities are plentiful in libraries these days. A quick summary of the current situation is that technical services departments must do more with the same or fewer financial and human resources and, at the same time, become involved in new library initiatives. The Anchor: 2005

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

This is a 30-slide presentation sponsored by the University of Arizona, School of Information Resources & Library Science, Library Student Organization (LSO) on Sept. 26, 2005 from 6 - 7:30 pm. This is essentially the story of DLIST from inception in 2002 and includes the establishment of an advisory board, the open access aggregator DL-Harvest in 2005, the unfolding of the goals, objectives and vision, and the people who have been involved including internships. The context of the Open Access movement is briefly explored. References and notes help increase understanding of the importance of open access and DLIST to LIS.

The materials in this collection document the programs and activities of the USF St. Petersburg Women’s Organization, a group established in 1979 as an offshoot of the USF Women’s Club in Tampa. Membership included staff, faculty, and spouses at USF St. Petersburg. The minutes, correspondence, and other records offer an excellent portrait of an important campus-wide organization that took shape during the first major expansion of the campus beyond its original site on the peninsula.

Academic Commons and Scott Memorial Library Staff Papers and Presentations

This article provides a list of helpful teaching tips for instructional librarians who need to meet the changing generational needs of their patrons. Specific generational qualities and attitudes of Generation X and Generation Y are discussed along with educational techniques and software recommendations. These tips are based on the authors' experiences at Drexel University's Hahnemann Library and Thomas Jefferson University's Scott Memorial Library, both of which are academic health sciences libraries.

This supplementary report details the completion, submission, and reception of The Usability Study of the Coates Library Website: Final Report. The update includes a catalog of website revisions conducted in summer 2005, many of which were direct responses to the findings of the study. Further, commentary is provided on usability study theory and practice that may be helpful to others conducting similar research methods.
