The Association of Christian Librarians in recognition of outstanding contribution to Christian librarianship awards the Emily Russel Award. The following article is a revision of the Emily Russel Award presentation made by Sheila Carib/om during the 1997 ACL Conference held at Northwestem College in St. Paul, Minnesota. In summary form, we have attempted to highlight the careers of the 1997 Emily Russel Award recipients.

The purpose of this study is to determine if third and fourth grade students enjoy reading and or enjoy books that are told from the first person point of view. Two versions of two different stories were used to determine reading preferences. The final samples included 46 third grade students and 38 fourth grade students. It was found that in the third grade, the first story, the boys preferred first person point of view and the girls preferred third person point of view. Fourth grade boys and girls both preferred the story told from the first person point of view. …

Like two brothers, western civilization and Christianity grew up together. Christianity gave the civilization its virtues, its view of work, and its view of service. With the decline of Christian influence, there is an increasing separation between virtue, service and work. This has led to vocational crisis in professions which have described themselves as vocations. Nurses, doctors and teachers have noticed the problem. This paper will make some observations concerning the crisis, give historical and biblical insights into our view of vocation, discuss some errors with the viewpoints, give some proposals for improving the situation and conclude with a summary.

Maybe college and university administrators have had it .right all the time-and librarians have been out of touch with reality. Is it possible that one of our most vocal causes has been a misguided one?

What I am talking about is the size of library budgets for the purchase of information resources. As colleges and universities experienced rapid growth following World War II, libraries shared in the largesse that resulted from increasing enrollments. New library buildings sprouted everywhere; budgets for learning resources expanded to fill the buildings. Life was good.

It discusses the growing number of resources on the World Wide Web that may be useful for doing acquisitions and collection development. It begins by introducing librarians to AcqWeb, an excellent site for librarians who do acquisitions and collection development. Then representative web sites which may be useful as verification tools, review sources, collection development resources or in finding out-of print materials are listed in an annotated webography.

Should librarians have faculty status? Why? The answer to the first question, as given by librarians, is normally "Yes." It is time to examine the second question-the Y factor. There are a number of reasons that librarians seek faculty status. Those who teach-or give library instruction consider their functions similar to those that faculty perform. This argument applies especially to classroom situations where librarians teach information literacy, which in the old days was called bibliographic instruction. Margaret Goldblatt, who died on June 15, 2000, in Cape Town, South Africa, after a year-long battle with cancer, was a rare combination of librarian and entrepreneur. She had both a sense of humor and a sense of professionalism that endeared her to those who knew her. Many of her colleagues knew her only through telephone and e-mail communications, for she worked the last several years from the office of Ward and Associates, located in the home she shared with her husband Peter Ward and her two children, Clea Goldblatt, age 21, and Zachary Ward, age 11.

The present state of the printed book in the "national collection" or commons of resources owned by U.S. academic libraries is reviewed. The status of collecting of foreign language monographs is emphasized. The future of collecting printed materials is considered in the context of an international information commons and cooperation beyond the North American academic library community.

The Internet has created new opportunities for librarians to present literature search results to clinicians. In order to take full advantage of these opportunities, libraries need to create locally maintained bibliographic databases. A simple method of creating a local bibliographic database and publishing it on the Web is described. The method uses off-the-shelf software and requires minimal programming. A hedge search strategy for outcome studies of clinical process interventions is created, and Ovid is used to search MEDLINE. The search results are saved and imported into EndNote libraries. The purpose of this research was to investigate the job application procedure specifically for the school library media specialist, with an emphasis on interview questions. As a result of this research project, "Employment Handbook for School Library Media Specialists" was written. Research showed the majority of interview questions presented to the school library media specialist were classified in the Professional - Media Specialist category.

This research examined messages sent to the LM _NET (School Library Media and Network Communications) listserv by school library media specialists during the month of October, 1999. A content analysis was used to address the first research question: "What areas of concern are school library media specialists who are LM _ NET subscribers addressing with their questions and postings to the LM _ NET community?" The second research question, "Are there underlying patterns addressed in LM _ NET messages posted by school library media specialists?" was approached with a textual analysis. The purpose of the study The Effect of Displays on Students' Book Selections was to investigate whether students would choose books from a display more often than when the books were shelved in regular order at the Starmont Community Schools K-8 Media Center. The thirty items selected for the display had not circulated five times during the current school year and were recommended in the 17th edition of Wilson's Children's Catalog. During the three week period when the display was in place students in third through eighth grade who visited the media center were videotaped to monitor book selection behaviors. …
