The influence of planting date on fall and spring net blotch epidemics (caused by Pyrenophora teres) was evaluated with the winter barley cultivar Pennrad. Experiments were conducted in Centre County, Pennsylvania, in 1982 and 1983 and in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in 1983. The three planting dates evaluated corresponded to the recommended date as well as dates I wk earlier and later than recommended for each specific location. Planting date had a significant influence on fall net blotch epidemics, with the greatest and least disease severities observed in the earliest and latest plantings, respectively. Single and mixed infections by Pyrenophora teres and two isolates of barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) were evaluated for their effects on the resistance to freezing stress of crowns of the winter barley cultivar Pennrad. Plants received one of several treatments: P. teres; either the RMV-NY or PAV-NY isolate of BYDV; RMV + P. teres; PAV + P. teres; or infestation with either nonviruliferous Rhopalosiphum maidis or R. padi. After the treatments, foliage and roots were harvested from 4-wk-old plants to evaluate the effects of infection(s) on top and root growth before freezing. This essay discusses two works by American writer Herman Melville: Moby-Dick (1851) and Pierre (1852), with emphasis on the uses of economic metaphors and on the issues of labor and alienation in the production of whale oil and of literature. Its argument is that Melville considered the mythology of American capitalism positively in the earlier work, and negatively in the later one. Moby-Dick explores the economic relations of the (capitalist) production of whale oil and converts them to metaphors for metaphysical truths. Pierre explores the economic relations involved in the production of literature and exposes the extent to which a …

This manual explains how to use the FAMULUS program package in a computing environment where most text is input through terminals and most files are stored on disks. I adapted it from a manual prepared in 1969, and I have gotten some ideas and examples from three other manuals. The main change I made was to recommend using an interactive editor program to prepare and perfect the FAMULUS records.

The original manual described this mode of operation:

Joshua Scottow was a colonial American merchant and the author of two histories of early New England: OLD MEN’S TEARS FOR THEIR OWN DECLENSIONS (1691) and A NARRATIVE OF THE PLANTING OF THE MASSACHUSETTS COLONY ANNO 1628 (1694). This article contains a brief biography, a critical appraisal, and bibliography of references. Scottow settled in Boston where he was a member of the Old (South) Church. He traded with Acadia (Quebec), developed frontier settlements near Scarborough (Maine), and served as a captain in King Philip’s War. Scottow was a devout supporter of the orthodox New England theocracy. His two histories are …

Daniel Denton wrote and published A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF NEW-YORK: FORMERLY CALLED NEW-NETHERLANDS in London in 1670. The work was a promotional tract designed to encourage English settlement of territories lately seized from the Dutch. It is one of the earliest English accounts of the geography, climate, economy, and native inhabitants of the region that includes present-day New York City, Long Island, Staten Island, and New Jersey. It is proposed that dark adaptation following a moderate pigment bleach may nearly as well be carried out (and more conveniently) under low room lighting conditions as in complete darkness. To test this idea, dark adaptation curves were determined either immediately after the termination of a 3 min, 4.1 log td white preexposure field, or following 10 or 15 min of additional exposure to one of three low-level photopic (2.9, 2.4, 1.8 log td) backgrounds of white light. Dark thresholds measured after the additional exposure fell rapidly and reached the rod plateau of the normal dark adaptation curve with a …

The security of library collections and property has long been a matter of serious concern to librarians, and much has been written about the protection of library property from vandalism and theft. This is quite understandable given the pressure of decreasing budgets, rising costs, and the difficulty of obtaining replacement copies. Little serious attention, however, has been devoted to another kind of library security problem: the need to protect the rights and safety of people, both staff members and library users, against what are loosely referred to as "problem patrons."

Critical flicker frequency (CFF) was investigated in a free swimming harp seal using behavioral techniques. The resulting CFF vs intensity curve indicates a definite rod/cone break, suggesting a duplex photoreceptor population, whose presence had not been observed in previous morphological reports.

Binocular depth perception was investigated in 164 healthy Ss of the Normative Aging Study, in connection with a model of ocular aging which explains change in the dioptric media in the forties on the basis of mechanical change and later change in the retina on the basis of metabolic change. A modified Verhoeff stereopter was used. The results showed a marked diminution to make stereoptic judgments occurred in the forties decade. This is in accordance with the model. In a companion paper, retinal field shrinkage will be explored as an illustration of later metabolic age change.

According to Frank Lundy, director of libraries at NU, completion of the three-story steel and glass structure, faced with pebbled concrete, fulfills a long-recognized need for expanded library facilities to serve the College of Agriculture and Home Economics.

During the 1964-65 academic year there were 1,235 undergraduate students enrolled in agriculture and home economics, and about 200 graduate students in the two areas. The following two biographical sketches of Gabriel Furman (1800–1854) appeared in the reprint edition of Notes, Geographical and Historical, Relating to the Town of Brooklyn, on Long-Island published in 1865 by the Faust Club of Brooklyn. The first is by the (unidentified) editor and compiler of that volume; the second is by the publisher and bookseller William Gowans.

Gabriel Furman was a Brooklyn lawyer, judge, and state senator, and an eminent scholar, book collector, compiler, and antiquarian. He led an eccentric and solitary life, and died in poverty, the victim, some said, of an opium addiction.

His published works consisted …

Steller’s classic work, published in Latin in 1751 and in German in 1753, contains the only scientific description from life of the Steller’s sea cow (Hydrodamalis gigas), as well as the first scientific descriptions of the fur seal or “sea bear” (Callorhinus ursinus), Steller’s sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus), and the sea otter (Enhydra lutris).

The following pages represent a new edition of Increase Mather’s influential contemporary account of King Philip’s War, between the English colonists in New England (and their Native allies) and the Wampanoag, Naragansett, and other Indian nations of the region, beginning in 1675. Mather’s account runs through August of 1676, when hostilities in southern, central, and western New England ended; fighting continued in the region of Maine until 1678. The war was disastrous for both sides, but particularly for the hostile Native Americans, who were brought very close to extermination.

John Easton (1617-1705) was deputy governor of Rhode Island in the winter of 1675-1676 when he wrote this account of the beginnings of King Philip’s War. One copy of the document was sent to Sir Edmund Andros, the governor of New York, and it was preserved in the state archives and is the original source of the version presented here. Jenny Hale Pulsipher writes that Easton "also may have sent copies of the narrative to England, proving to authorities that, contrary to Massachusetts’s repeated protests, the colonies, not the Indians, bore responsibility for the conflict." This is a well-known execution sermon from seventeenth-century Massachusetts, delivered on the occasion of the sentencing to death of a young man convicted of bestiality—specifically of copulation with a mare, in which he was discovered in the open in broad daylight. Samuel Danforth, who wrote and delivered the sermon, would have known the condemned young man very well. Benjamin Goad had been born into Danforth’s congregation at Roxbury and had grown up under his pastoral care.
