Jay Hegde (Letters, 29 Oct., p. 637) asserts that “science students enter graduate school for the wrong reasons” when they seek “wholesale tuition waivers and stipends.” The implication is that students, with their sights set only on the big bucks they’ll rake in as graduate students, disregard that they may be unemployed after receiving their doctorate because of the lack of professional-level positions. Anyone who has gone through graduate school on a tuition waiver and stipend knows that big bucks it ain’t, so that is unlikely to be the major reason someone chooses to continue his or her education...

The Nebraska Newspaper Project completed a planning grant in 1992/93 with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The grant provided support for a major survey to identify significant collections of newspapers around Nebraska. Surveys were sent to newspaper publishing companies, county and municipal clerks' offices, historical societies, libraries, and genealogical societies. While there were many responses to the written surveys, telephone calls had to be made to about one third of the institutions. In some cases, staff visited collections around the state to verify holdings.

The survey proved that the most significant collection in the state is at …

While several guides to the Parliamentary Papers exist, they are too lengthy for quick reference, are outdated, use unfamiliar terminology, and assume a previous knowledge of British government. Two other factors can make the guides confusing. First, the use of the term Parliamentary Papers is not always clear. It is sometimes applied, as it is in this article, to the entire range of papers produced by and for Parliament. Sometimes, however, it is applied more narrowly and refers only to a portion of the Papers also known as the Sessional Papers. Secondly, the available guides do not always indicate whether …

Recognizing Multiple Decision-Making Models: A Guide For Managers, Joan Giesecke

Empirical studies of decision making find that the process is more disorderly than described in rational models. New models have appeared that suggest that managers need to accommodate the randomness found in complex organizations. This article examines two approaches for dealing with this disorder: the political-bargaining model and the garbage can model. The essay clarifies the differences between these two approaches and assesses their usefulness to managers for understanding the decision-making process.

As the twenty-first century approaches, Kansas librarians, archivists, genealogists, records managers, and historians are seeking solutions to a crisis.

The crisis is the disintegration of the state's information resources. Documents recording births, deaths, inheritances and laws are all susceptible to the degradation of the materials on which they are recorded.

Neither paper nor optical disk will survive forever—acidic paper becomes embrittled in 50–80 years; optical disks and the equipment to access the information upon them may not last fifteen years.

Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. sepedonicus, the causal agent of bacterial ring rot, was detected in field-grown potatoes using a 1.078-kb repeated C. m. sepedonicus sequence as a probe in DNA hybridizations. Stem and petiole samples from susceptible and tolerant cultivars (Russet Burbank and Belrus, respectively), inoculated with 10 mM phosphate buffer (pH 7.2) or 102 or 109 cfu of either an aggressive or a less aggressive C. m. sepedonicus strain, were processed by directly blotting cut tissue sections on nylon membranes, macerating frozen tissues, and applying xylem fluid collected by centrifugation to nylon membranes (stems only). Variability between readers in the evaluation of the radiographic appearances of pneumoconiosis has been investigated by several authors. To reduce inter and intrareader variability, standard reference films were introduced for epidemiological purposes. Improved films and methods of classification were published in subsequent years. The category of profusion of small opacities is determined by considering the profusion as a whole over the affected zones of the lung, and by comparing this with the standard radiographs. This requires a mental process of integrating profusion over the affected zones.

Differential Toxicity Of Enantiomers Of Maackiain And Pisatin To Phytopathogenic Fungi, Leslie M. Delserone, David E. Matthews, Hans D. Vanetten

Enantiomers of the isoflavonoid phytoalexins maackiain and pisatin were tested for toxicity to 36 fungal isolates representing 19 species. Nine of these species were pathogens of red clover, which synthesizes (–)maackiain; seven species were reported to be pathogenic on garden pea, which synthesizes predominantly (+)pisatin and minor amounts of (–)maackiain. In general, non-host phytoalexins were more inhibitory than host phytoalexins to growth of these pathogens. In addition, the opposite enantiomer of the host phytoalexin was often more inhibitory to a pathogenic fungus than the normally-occurring enantiomer. There was little correlation between the tolerance of fungi to (+) versus (–)pisatin and …

The six flute duets of Wilhelm Friedemann Bach (1710-1784) are among the finest examples of this genre from the eighteenth century. That they are still not as well known as they deserve to be may stem partly from the problems with the editions that have been available until recently. The question of when these duets were composed has never been completely answered, largely because the sources present a confusing picture. Preservation literacy is becoming crucial as Nebraska's collections age and as the body of .Nebraska's written heritage grows. Preservation needs in the state have been identified by surveying libraries, historical societies, museums and records offices. Based on these surveys and on a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) funded State Preservation Planning Project, solutions to shared preservation problems are being proposed. Goals are to improve housing and care of collections, to preserve key collections in Nebraska, to raise public awareness, and to provide a coordinated preservation program for state repositories.

Organizations can respond to change in their environments in a variety of planned and unplanned ways. In complex organizations, when the environment is unstable, managers need to examine their assumptions about how organizations function in order to develop effective strategies for introducing creativity and change. This essay reviews the assumptions behind theories of organizational decision making, explores how those assumptions affect how managers decide strategies for introducing change, and offers some ideas on how to introduce creativity into organizations that face ambiguous internal and external environments.

It describes the creation of a LaserCat/Information desk in the library lobby and the use of technical services librarians and paraprofessional staff from technical services and elsewhere in the library to staff the desk.

An epidemiological investigation was carried out to determine the relationship between silicosis in hardrock miners in Ontario and cumulative exposure to silica (free crystalline silica-α quartz) dust. This second report describes a side-by-side air-sampling program used to derive a konimeter/gravimetric silica conversion curve. A total of 2,360 filter samples and 90,000 konimeter samples were taken over 2 years in two mines representing the ore types gold and uranium, both in existing conditions as well as in an experimental stope in which dry drilling was used to simulate the high dust conditions of the past. A historical prospective study of cancer in lamp manufacturing workers in one plant was conducted. All men and women who worked for a total of at least 6 months and were employed at some time between 1960 and 1975 were included. Work histories were abstracted and subjects were divided according to whether they had worked in the coiling and wire drawing area (CWD). Cancer morbidity from 1964 to 1982 was ascertained via the provincial registry, and was compared with the site-specific incidence in Ontario, adjusting for age, sex and calendar period. The objective of this study was to investigate whether aesthesiometric threshold changes occur over the course of a workshift in vibration exposed hard rock miners relative to workers unexposed to vibration during the shift. The subjects were 99 miners and 40 smelter workers; four subjects declined to participate and nine were excluded from the analysis because of apparent failure to comprehend the testing procedure. Two point discrimination and depth sense aesthesiometry were conducted at the beginning and at the end of the workshift in all digits of both hands excluding the thumbs.
