Indigenous nations and issues are a worldwide concern and a number of WWW resources that support multidisciplinary research in this area have been previously identified. The availability of such tools is a boon to cost-effective collection development. One of the previously selected electronic resources was the Indian Affairs: Laws and Treaties Internet site at the Oklahoma State University. This commentary describes more fully the use of this collection of treaties created between the Indian Nations and the U.S. federal government. Research examples are used to demonstrate the relationship of these documents to various indigenous issues.

Purpose: As digital resources proliferate, libraries plan to grant easy access to a distributed set of resources from one single entry point inside and outside the OPAC. The quest to manage the metadata about these resources becomes more important than ever. Thus, the term, “metadata management” is being used by various communities creating spatial data, enterprise applications, data warehouses, legacy environments, and bibliographic data. Unfortunately, metadata management is sparsely mentioned in the traditional information technology journals, grey literature, information technology company web sites, and the library science literature. The relationship of the academic library with the campus computing center has been an issue since at least the late 1970s. The issue was discussed at length in the 1980s with little effect on existing organizations. Interest in the issue was rekindled in the 1990s, when a number of institutions merged or aligned the library and the computer center, with varying results. The literature assumes or asserts that it is the norm for academic libraries and computing centers to be merged or administratively aligned. Museum and Library Services, the University of Nebraska– Lincoln and the University of Virginia embarked on a project to create a unified finding aid to Walt Whitman manuscript collections held in many different institutions. By working collaboratively, the project team is developing a finding aid that is tailored to the needs of Whitman scholars while following a standard developed in the archival community, encoded archival description (EAD). XSLT stylesheets are used to harvest information from various repositories’ finding aids and to create an integrated finding aid with links back to the original versions. Mann Library created the Cornell University Geospatial Information Repository (CUGIR), a web-based repository providing free access to geospatial data and metadata for New York State. Since its inception, CUGIR has undergone a series of changes and upgrades in response to emerging standards and technologies in the field of geospatial information systems (GIs) and digital library research. Its continuous adoption of new library and GIs standards and developments has made CUGIR increasingly more accessible to users within Cornell University and beyond.

The story of the scourge of pellagra, a fatal niacin deficiency characterized by a severe skin rash, diarrhea, and dementia, has faded into obscurity in this country. With a mortality rate of upwards of 30 percent, it plagued the southern United States as late as the 1940s, claiming the lives of hundreds or thousands of impoverished Southerners every year. Joseph Goldberger's family, Hungarian Jews, emigrated to New York City in 1883 when he was nine years old. He became a scientist working in the U.S. Public Health and Marine Hospital Service. The authors conducted a survey of distance librarian-administrators at Association of Research Libraries member libraries who plan for and manage distance learning library services. Survey questions included: What resources and services do ARL libraries currently offer to distance learners? What changes are being planned for in the immediate future? With libraries experiencing flattened budgets, what will be the impact on distance learners? Findings from the survey will inform librarian- administrators and library deans/directors of the current state of, and emerging trends in, distance learning library services.

Briggs chronicles the cholera epidemic in the Amacuro Delta of Venezuela in 1992 and 1993 and examines the modes of discourse that shaped perceptions of the tragedy. He demonstrates how the dominant narrative-that is, that of public health officials, journalists, and doctors-was based not on data and reason, but primarily on deeply ingrained cultural and racial stereotypes. He contends that the racialized discourse adversely affected the response of the health care community to the epidemic, resulting in hundreds of preventable deaths. First, that Willa Cather, who lived in the Village from 1906 until 1927, and made New York her permanent residence until her death in 1947, was at American modernism's geographic center: around her in these years was the highest concentration of artistic talent that twentieth century America ever knew. According to Ann Douglas, "Modern American culture ... is unimaginable without New York City." This is a non-rigorous scientific examination of race that largely relies on 40-year-old work. The thesis of the book is that race accounts for significant differences among humans, including intelligence. While medically and culturally race has meaning, in terms of biology it is not generally considered to be a relevant attribute of an organism. To use biological data as these authors do, and to ignore so much biological work that has touched on the issue of human racial differences over the past 40 years, calls into question the conclusions made here. As academic libraries undergo renovation and building projects, various technical service operations are frequently moved out of the main building and housed in an off-site location. The aim of this research was to discover, by means of a questionnaire, what the impact of such a move is on the workflow of professional catalogers. The researchers concluded that a positive experience on the part of the catalogers depends upon detailed planning, thoughtful administrative support, and an element of luck. However, some problems are unavoidable in moving catalogers away from the main collection.

The longevity of printed guides to resources on the web is a topic of some concern to all librarians. This paper attempts to determine whether guides created by specialist librarians perform better than randomly assembled lists of resources (assembled solely for the purpose of web studies), commercially created guides ('Best of the web'-type publications), and guides prepared by specialists in library science and other fields. The paper also attempts to determine whether the characteristics of included web resources have an impact on guides' longevity. Lastly, the paper addresses methodological issues of concern to this and similar studies.

Traditionally, working with teaching faculty is the primary consulting role for most faculty development professionals. The boundaries, however, are not always clear regarding instructional assistance that is provided to other personnel. This chapter demonstrates how collaboration among faculty consultants and information specialists can result in enhanced library utilization and bett er research-related instruction. Our model uses problem-based learning (PEL) as a vehicle for teaching research and retrieval skills in either a single class experience or in multiple classroom visits with an engineering librarian.

Despite ever-increasing electronic information, space on library shelves continues to be a problem. This article discusses one library's efforts to find space on overcrowded library shelves by moving selected resources to off-swite storage and at the same time promoting use of electronic resources, namely the electronic journals that make up the JSTOR database. Issues explored include in-house use of bound periodicals, circulation statistics, interlibrary loan requests, and computer printing vs. photocopying for print titles available through JSTOR.

The leper colony on the Hawaiian island of Molokai has been covered in a number of books over the years, both fiction and nonfiction, many focusing on the efforts of Father Damien of Belgium, who sacrificed his own health to improve the conditions of the exiles. This latest volume is written from the perspective of a 12-year-old Hawaiian girl, Liliha, who contracts the disease from her cruel grandmother, and the novel is set in the years before Father Damien arrived at the colony in 1873. Libraries often receive gifts of unique, specialized materials to add to their collections. In 1999, the University Libraries at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln received a quilt newsletter collection as an addition to the American Quilt Study Groups quilt collection. In order to provide the best access to the collection, the cataloger in charge of the quilt newsletters developed a unique classification number for the collection and organized the collection by state of origin, followed by organization.

Covering water's significance, from its practical necessity to its spiritual essence, Shiva sets out to justify the premise that "The water crisis is the most pervasive, most severe, and most invisible dimension of the ecological devastation of the earth."
