In recognition of its centennial, the American Dairy Science Association (founded in July 1906) has produced this large (8 1/2 x 11) coffee-table book, chronicling the Association’s first 100 years. The book is richly illustrated with both black and white, and color photographs, gleaned from many academic dairy science programs, individual association members, and well-known dairy industry publications. Beginning with information on dairying prior to 1906 and the founding of the ADSA, the arrangement is then divided into 25-year intervals. This paper enumerates federal government documentation of the period 1970-1989 pertaining to organic agriculture in the United States, identified in the Congressional Information Service’s Cumulative Indices and in bibliographies published by the United States National Agricultural Library. These Congressional hearings, federal legislation, and selected U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)-sponsored documents provide an historical context for the 1990 legislation that created the National Organic Program (NOP) and the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB). The paper provides chronological tabulations of the historical documents, and discusses the communication difficulties and relationships revealed therein between the Congress, the USDA, and organic producers of …

The year is 1867 in Paris during the Second Empire. A musician sets off one day from his flat in a building several centuries old situated on the north side of the city. He is mulling over finances, and he feels lucky to have the place. Though the building is six floors tall with a narrow spiral staircase, the ground floor apartment was available when he was looking, and the piano movers were just able to shoehorn in his forty-year- old Erard piano.

Professional development is essential for academic librarians to keep current with skills, knowledge, and competencies in rapidly changing times. The authors surveyed distance librarians in academic libraries to determine their professional development needs. Respondents were asked to indicate which professional development activities they are currently participating in and those they are likely to engage in within the next five years. Findings from the survey will inform library administrators, distance librarians, and professional associations of the professional development needs of distance librarians.

Chairs of teaching departments have been accepted as in a position to assist their faculty’s development. Perceptions of the chair’s role from the 29 faculty’s, the chair’s and higher administrators’ viewpoints, and across a variety of institutional settings, have been the subject of research for decades. This research expanded the small amount of similar research that has begun regarding department chairs in academic libraries. The academic library department chairs must act as more than managers and supervisors of personnel. The institutional repository (hereafter IR) at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (hereafter UNL) began operations July 1, 2005. At the close of our first year we had mounted 2,397 articles, which had been downloaded 58,743 times; the dissertations collection included 10,117 theses, which had been downloaded 34,862 times. We currently average around 2,000 hits and 700 downloads per day. Usage increases as the semester progresses, and falls during the Christmas break and during the summer. In addition to the various wildlife damage conference proceedings, we had mounted extensive backfiles of the Journal of Parasitology, and the proceedings of the People of …

The transformational concept of Web 2.0 for libraries was a hot topic at three major conferences in June of 2006. The American Library Association (ALA), Special Libraries Association (SLA), and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) conferences all had sessions on the subject. Not all of the focus was on sci-tech libraries. An exploration of the use of these technologies for library instruction in science and engineering fields is the emphasis for this column.

Librarians, faculty, professional researchers, and students often encounter difficulties in locating pertinent journal articles for the field of archaeology. This article examines the coverage given by 13 discipline-specific and subject-oriented indexes available online over a 50-year interval to 89 archaeology journals originating in the United Kingdom and in Ireland. The coverage provided by the individual indexes and several of the larger issues surrounding the coverage of the field are discussed, and a few recommendations are offered.

This paper presents the results of a study of the utility of several popular search engines and of two newer search engines with respect to librarian-selected lists of Web resources and internet searching behaviors. This study addresses whether said resources are returned where internet searchers could reasonably be expected to find them and whether the search engines employed serve as acceptable substitutes for the expert advice of librarians. Search engines included in the study were Google, MSN.com, Yahoo, Lycos, AskJeeves, Icerocket, and Acoona. A “Digital Content and Issues for Libraries” workshop sponsored by ALA’s Office of Information Technology Policy (OITP) was held at the O’Hare Hilton in Chicago April 7–9, 2006. Thirty-three attendees represented several ALA divisions, OITP, the Special Library Association, NISO, the Association of Research Libraries, the Association of Moving Image Archivists, the Digital Library Federation, public broadcasters, foundations, and government libraries and funding agencies. The workshop was convened to help OITP form its policy agenda with regard to digitized library content.

Scholarship that traces connections between Whitman and so-called “subliterary” forms is valuable, as it makes us more competent readers, better equipped to navigate the allusive terrain of Whitman’s writing and to assess Whitman’s achievements in historical context. This essay will, in part, contribute to the growing “inventory” of Whitman’s affinities with currently devalued literary and social forms. In addition, though, I will attempt to redress the problem of anachronism that exists in current scholarship on Whitman and popular culture, exploring his literary career in the context of contemporaneous nineteenth-century understandings of culture. Mass media, the various means of communication designed to reach a large portion of the public, include but are not limited to film, radio, television, advertising, popular music, the internet, newspapers, and magazines. Whitman’s appearances in mass media have not been studied much, though they deserve attention because the evolving uses of his image and words can illuminate important aspects of his cultural afterlife. Until the 1960s, Whitman was invoked with surprising frequency as an icon of high literary stature. Advertisers in particular relied on his fame – not on his challenges to orthodox thinking and ordinary social arrangements – …

This thesis is a contrastive analysis of a semantic field, a group of words with related but not identical meanings that all describe or pertain to one domain or semantic area. The semantic field grace is compared in English, German, Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. The source of the data is selected books from the Bible, both the Old Testament (OT) and the New Testament (NT). Spoken-word audio collections cover many domains, including radio and television broadcasts, oral narratives, governmental proceedings, lectures, and telephone conversations. The collection, access, and preservation of such data is stimulated by political, economic, cultural, and educational needs. This paper outlines the major issues in the field, reviews the current state of technology, examines the rapidly changing policy issues relating to privacy and copyright, and presents issues relating to the collection and preservation of spoken audio content.

The existence of widely available large, multi-subject, online databases calls into question the necessity for small, discipline-specific indexes to support research. This study attempts to determine whether the online Communication Studies indexes provide access to the journal literature that researchers in the field actually cite and whether, where the current journal literature is concerned, that access is in any way superior to that provided by large, multi-subject, online indexes.

In order to organize the widely dispersed manuscripts of Walt Whitman, The Walt Whitman Archive, in partnership with the University of Nebraska- Lincoln Libraries, has utilized the power of Encoded Archival Description (EAD) to create a single, scholarly enhanced guide to Whitman’s poetry manuscripts. This integrated finding guide to Whitman’s poetry manuscripts includes item-level description, links to repository guides that provide both location information and collection context, links to digital images of the manuscripts, and links to Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) transcriptions.
