Cooperation Between Estonian Research Libraries: Integration And Resource Sharing Issues, Jüri Järs

In this paper the main fields of cooperation (coordinated collections development, creating common databases, joint supply of electronic resources, standardization etc) between Estonian research libraries are examined and the institutions which have been founded for cooperation purposes are introduced. The results of cooperative activities are brought out. An overview is also given about the legal acts and regulations concerning the operation of research libraries.

Libraries are looking at new types of services to improve the dissemination of information to their users. One such new service, the integration of Interlibrary Loan with acquisitions and collection development, looks like a promising approach to meet the users’ information needs. The requests that meet selection criteria are not sent through the regular ILL borrowing channels but are instead turned into rush acquisitions. A special fund was set aside to purchase books requested by users (students, faculty and staff) through ILL processes. The ILL Librarian does both the selection of the ILL requests and the ordering of the books. …

Libraries are increasingly vocal about the need to adopt strategic marketing management which is the process of creating and facilitating the exchange of products of value with others. Development in technology has brought to the libraries new kind of resources. Digital works such as books, periodicals and other materials are now in libraries collections. In spite of the fact that basic principles of copyright remain the same for ”traditional” and digital works. Copyright in digital environment is much more difficult to control because of the ease of creation, modification and distribution of digital copies over networks. Current and new methods of cooperation between academic libraries of the Pomeranian District. Formalization of current cooperation methods by establishing a new body – the Pomeranien District Academic Libraries’ Association, with 12 member libraries participating. Cooperation between the libraries in Poland takes place both on the national and regional scale. This phenomenon is consistent with the spirit of the times, because through the cooperation the quality of library services can be improved and the costs of any innovations can be significantly reduced. The purpose of this paper is to present and discuss results of a survey to measure concerns and expectations of library staff before and after a merger. The survey was done four months before a merger took place between three separate Technikons in South Africa, and it was repeated two months after the merger. The questionnaire that was used to gather information from all full-time library staff members of the three technikons included questions on how important it is for library staff, within the context of the merger, that certain work-related conditions stay the same, e.g. to have the same …

As the global economy grew in the latter half of the 20th Century, the demand for the mobility of engineers greatly increased. In the 1980’s and 1990’s, the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), an accreditation agency serving primarily the United States, began to look at engineering programs outside of the United States with the intent of establishing recognized reciprocity. Through the Washington Accord, first established in 1989, mutual recognition agreements were signed with accrediting agencies in several countries. In previous papers delivered at IATUL Conferences, I described the TriUniversity Group (TUG) library collaboration. I spoke of the advantages and reported that three academic libraries, large (University of Waterloo) medium (University of Guelph) and small (Wilfrid Laurier University) were working together creatively to address a number of issues: • Remote storage of little used library materials, • Development of a web-based, unified and integrated online “catalogue”, • Joint purchases of online resources, and • Rationalization of information resources This pioneering collaborative undertaking, initiated in 1995, is now widely emulated, with some success. Griffith University’s Division of Information Services provides integrated library, information technology and flexible learning services to Griffith’s community of approximately 30,000 staff and students. A Division-wide restructure in 2001 led to the creation of InfoServices, a new organisational unit created from members of library and information technology front-line staff. This unit was presented with the challenge of answering the majority of customer inquiries related to the Division’s products and services. InfoServices seeks to resolve 80% of all customer inquiries at first contact, regardless of product. Digital imaging projects of the G.W. Blunt White Library at Mystic Seaport Museum, funded by the Library of Congress and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, are explained and demonstrated with comments on how the Library has incorporated the projects’ outcomes into its workflow. Upon reapplying for additional funds, the Library was asked by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to instead reach out to scholars in the field and determine what their actually needs were in developing new scholarship. The Library hosted a conference and developed a survey to measure the scholars’ needs. Methodology and preliminary results are discussed.
