This study investigated availability of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in two libraries at Niger Delta University, the main library and the health sciences library. The study found that the university has an array of ICT facilities, but that automation in the libraries has not advanced, and the library has no web presence on the university website.

Insurance Coverage In Nigerian Academic Libraries, E. Ademola Adekanye

The study examines insurance coverage of library materials in Nigerian universities. The size of the collection, disasters experienced in the library, safety measures, and contingency plans were examined. The study found that more than 80 percent of the libraries used for the study had no insurance coverage. A larger percentage of the respondents did not have a written security policy. The study recommends comprehensive insurance coverage for university libraries.

Despite the efforts to check the spread of HIV/AIDS in Nigeria, deaths and new infections are recorded daily. The government has formed the National Action Committee on AIDS (NACA), the State Action Committee on AIDS (SACA), and the Local Action Committee on AIDS (LACA), to create awareness through rural extension services. This paper examines the extent to which these services are provided in Olofinmuyin market, Sango Ota. Questionnaires and interview questions were used for data collection. This study explores the history of curriculum revision in the department of LIS University of the Punjab (PU) Lahore. It focuses on the perceptions of PU alumni about the MLIS curricula. t investigates their satisfaction with curriculum, learning, faculty, instructional methods, instructional facilities, etc., through a questionnaire survey. The sample of 40 professionals who were graduates of three academic years (from 2005-2007) was selected. The findings reveal that 78 percent were up to 50 perrcent satisfied with the LIS curricula. This paper briefly explores the relationship of factors in tje provision of Networked Services (NS) at National Institute of Technology (NIT) libraries in India. The factors such as Library Automation (LA), Network Infrastructure (NI), Computer Infrastructure (CI), Electronic Resources (ER), and Manpower (MA) are compared to Networked Services (NS) offered by the NIT libraries. This study explores whether the student work study programme of Hezekiah Oluwasanmi Library of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife Nigeria programme has lived up to the purpose of its establishment. Existing circulation statistical records and interview were used to elicit information. The results of the appraisal reveal that there are challenges and prospects; and that the programme has complemented staff shortages, assisted indigent students, and contributed to academic excellence of the participating students. It is therefore recommended that more funds should be allocated to the programme and more students should be employed.

The paper surveys the use of electronic journals by academics at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. It considers the attitude, purpose, frequency of use, and problems encountered. The data represent responses from two hundred and forty-five academic staff. The results reveal a high percentage of use for literature search and professional development. Use is affected by problems associated with basic infrastructures prevalent in the developing countries. The Effect Of Social Factors On Students' Academic Performance In Nigerian Tertiary Institutions, S.S. Umar, I.O. Shaib, D.N. Aituisi, N.A. Yakubu, O. Bada

Students' academic performance is influenced by social factors. These factors include romantic relationships, student cults, membership in clubs and organizations, and sports. Sampling via mid-point square approach was used to compare social variables with the students' CGPA. Both the f-test at 0.05 level of significance and regression indicate that romantic relationships and student cults have a significant effect on academic performance, while club or organization activity and excessive sporting is not significant.

The study investigates the provision and use of legal information among civil rights groups in oil producing communities of Nigeria. The survey research design was employed for this study. Data was gathered by questionnaire from 127 active civil rights group members spread across ten oil producing communities in three major oil producing states of Nigeria – Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers. The data obtained were analyzed using simple percentages. Findings revealed that majority of the civil rights groups members are youths with low educational background. Universities in Nigeria operate with people performing certain specialised complementary roles to make the system work. Workers e belong to one of several workers' associations (trade unions). Private university students are a unique population in Nigeria. The organization and administration of these institutions, the mode of admission, and facilities in place account for the uniqueness of their students compared with their counterparts in government institutions. Students in private institutions are provided with facilities that will enhance their academic performance, which includes hostel accommodation, sporting activities, a well-equipped library, information and communication technology (Internet access), and others. Payments for such facilities are always included in tuition fees. It is the aim of this research to determine the level of accessibility and use of Internet services in these universities.

The collection is the library's most valuable asset and it needs to be protected from security breaches. Collection security is an important issue for academic libraries.This study explores the major collection security issues related to library collections in Malaysian university libraries. The study reveals the measures adopted by the Malaysian libraries to ensure effective collections security governance. The findings indicate that main breaches of collection security are book theft, damage, mutilation, or defacement; books attacked by insects or worms; and non-return of borrowed materials. Demographic Variables And Self-Efficacy As Factors Influencing Career Commitment Of Librarians In Federal University Libraries In Nigeria, Gboyega Adio, S.O. Popoola

This research examines the influence demographic variables and self-efficacy have on career commitment of librarians in federal university libraries in Nigeria. The standardized self-efficacy scale developed by Schwarzer and Jerusalem (1993) and revalidated in 2007 with a reliability coefficient of 0.81 was used for data collection. The outcome of the research showed that demographic variables and self-efficacy had significant influence on career commitment of librarians working in federal university libraries in Nigeria (F (9; 352) = 11.058, p < 0.05). The study revealed that demographic variables and self-efficacy accounted for 20% (adj R 2 = 0.2000) in variability of career commitment of the respondents.

The study explores student perceptions of the academic librarian as teachers. A questionnaire was distributed to 500 students at two City University of New York colleges. Convenience and snowball sampling were employed to reach as many respondents as possible. Questionnaires were administered following a library instruction class and in the campus cafeteria. Contrary to results from previous studies, many respondents consider librarians to be teachers.

This study is a survey of access to health information by people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in Nigeria. A questionnaire was used to collect data from 120 respondents. The data obtained were analysed using simple percentages. The study reveals that libraries are not used as sources of health information by PLWHA. The study recommends that libraries should repackage information for PLWHA, educate users, and organise awareness/outreach services in collaboration with NGOs on the subject of HIV/AIDS.

In Bangladesh, most people (80 percent) live in villages and Community Information Service (CIS) facilities remain low. The paper evaluates the success of programmes of the Federal Government of Nigeria in improving funding of university libraries. The World Bank loan, 10 percent direct allocation, and the Education Trust Fund (ETF) interventions were found to be beneficial to library acquisitions. Interventions like the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) and National Universities Commission (NUC) central book purchase scheme as beneficial. Prudent management of funds at Hezekiah Oluwasanmi library has been of help since the stoppage of direct allocation from NUC. It is recommended that the government should involve end users of intervention programmes in planning and execution of future programmes.

This study evaluates the educational and information needs and information-seeking behaviour of the faculty members of the Islamia University of Bahawalpur. Questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were used with one hundred faculty members. One hundred fifty questionnaires were distributed and 100 returned. The data showed that most faculty (76%) consider the Internet the most useful source of information, along with books, journals, and informal channels. The teachers from Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities, and Islamic Learning also want up-to-date resources relevant to their fields via a digital library. Librarians and teaching faculty can collaborate to create a good learning environment for students. Organizing events with outside speakers can bring lasting benefits to students, faculty, and the community. This article highlights the need for advance preparation when organizing an event. Librarians must clearly define objectives to maximize participation and ensure that events are linked to courses. When real-world events are linked to students' academic experience, they are more actively engaged and can be more involved in their studies. Through administrative contributions, librarians can facilitate such events.
