Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
A publisher of a research database controls the search algorithms of its database and, at a minimum, partially controls the indexing metadata attached to journal articles indexed in its database. A publisher of a journal partially controls the indexing metadata attached to articles in that journal. A publisher who publishes both a research database and journals that are indexed in that database has significant control over two major aspects of the discovery process. This allows the possibility for a publisher to introduce a bias into its algorithm that could favor discovery of its own articles. This work looks at search …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The library literature on collection development has recently seen a spate of publications and presentations on patron-driven acquisitions (PDA). The bulk of this literature has addressed the implementation and touted the successes of PDA at academic libraries, yet a counter literature has been developing, much of it addressing the potential failings of library patrons as selectors. There has been little focus, however, on patrons’ potentially problematic behaviors as post-purchase users of PDA materials. This study aimed to discover whether library patrons might in effect be monopolizing print books purchased via PDA via circulation renewals. The study found that there was …

Can the evolution of web interfaces be documented? Initiatives that explore these questions already exist such as the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine (which stores source code from websites along with images); however, other archive building solutions are also available but have yet to be explored. The field of digital asset management (DAM), for example, has long examined how assets (digital files) are stored, organized, retrieved, and preserved. …
