The Palmer And Stevens “Usual And Accustomed Places” Treaties In The Opinions Of The Courts, Charles D. Bernholz, Robert Weiner

One hundred fifty years ago, Joel Palmer, as Superintendent of Indian Affairs for the Oregon Territory, and Isaac I. Stevens, as Governor and Superintendent of Indian Affairs of the Washington Territory, negotiated a series of treaties with tribes of the Pacific Northwest. These 10 instruments have affected the gathering rights of tribes and of others in this area and throughout the United States and have generated a substantial amount of litigation. This article reports on the 512 citations to these specific documents in 354 opinions, between the years 1874 and 2005, in various jurisdictions ranging from territorial courts to the …

Librarian Status At Us Research Universities: Extending The Typology, Mary K. Bolin

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

A typology of librarian status developed for land grant universities is extended to US research universities. Land grant librarians are tenure-track faculty in 70% of institutions. Librarians in the expanded population have that status slightly more than half the time. Institution size, geographic region, and public/private governance are discussed.

In 2004, the Wichita State University (WSU) interlibrary loan services completed a study of currently available interlibrary loan software. Based upon the results of the study, the library chose the Interlibrary Loan Internet Accessible database (ILLiad). After implementation, individual training was offered to patrons. In 2006, staff decided to survey patrons' satisfaction. The general purpose of the survey was to determine whether users had accepted the new system, to measure satisfaction with turnaround time, delivery method and the print quality and usefulness of the received material. This manuscript examines the intellectual, cultural, and practical approaches to science and engineering education as a part of the land-grant college movement in the Midwest between the 1850s and early 1900s. These land-grant institutions began and grew within unique frontier societies that simultaneously cherished self-reliance and diligently worked to make themselves part of the larger national experience. College administrators and professors encountered rapidly changing public expectations, regional needs, and employment requirements. Adjusting American Indian Treaties: A Guide To Supplemental Article And Supplementary Treaty Citations From Opinions Of The Federal, State, And Territorial Court Systems, Charles D. Bernholz

Supplemental articles and supplementary treaties were used as tools to modify American Indian treaties. In general, supplemental articles were adjustments to the parameters of a treaty, frequently made as quickly as the same – or the next – day of negotiations, whereas the task of a supplementary treaty was to affect the conditions created in a previous treaty(s).

A Typology Of Librarian Status At Land Grant Universities, Mary K. Bolin

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Data were gathered on librarian status at fifty land grant universities. The findings reveal four status types: Professorial, Other ranks with tenure, Other ranks without tenure, and Academic or Professional Staff. Eighty percent of institutions have librarians who are faculty and 85 percent of those are tenure-track.

Text analysis is a rapidly growing endeavor within the digital world. The development of effective tools will accelerate progress in this area and, simultaneously, unveil aspects of selected materials that may never have been previously studied.

This article introduces TokenX, a text visualization and analysis tool that will expedite such examinations. A multi-year, trend study of public computer usage was conducted to determine use patterns of The University of Montana Mansfield Library public computers before, during, and after the implementation of an Information Center commons environment. Sampling methodology was developed and implemented in 3-year increments beginning in 1999. Analysis provided information for data-driven decisions on staffing patterns, expansion of public computer access, decisions on software and imaging management, and the modification of study design.
