Using Digital Libraries Non-Visually: Understanding The Help-Seeking Situations Of Blind Users, Iris Xie, Rakesh Babu, Soohyung Joo, Paige Fuller

Introduction. This study explores blind users' unique help-seeking situations in interacting with digital libraries. In particular, help-seeking situations were investigated at both the physical and cognitive levels.
Method. Fifteen blind participants performed three search tasks, including known-item search, specific information search, and exploratory search, using the selected digital library. Pre-questionnaire, pre- and post-interviews, transaction logs and think-aloud protocols were used to collect data.
Analysis. Open coding analysis was used to identify help-seeking situations the physical and cognitive levels.
Results. The study identified seventeen help-seeking situations that blind users encountered while using digital libraries, including nine at …

Personalizing Voyager Using Browser Extensions, Kathryn Lybarger

If there is a complex web site that you use frequently, you may be able to simplify your work using web browser extensions! In this presentation I will describe a few types of browser extensions (including OpenSearch and GreaseMonkey), and give examples of how I have used them to speed up (and otherwise improve) Voyager on the web for cataloging staff, all without needing any special server access. Similar methods could be used for other web-based systems, such as Primo and Alma.

We started using the purge job to remove old patron records with SSNs, as a first step toward removing the numbers in all our patron records. With new state laws, we are trying to eliminate as many privacy issues as we can by deleting records for patrons who are not currently using the libraries. The Commonwealth of Kentucky has a statute of limitations of 5 years on small fines. We forgive fines older than 5 years by running the Fine Forgive program at the beginning of the Fall Semester each year.

The newest module in the Voyager suite, Global Data Change, allows for batch editing of bibliographic, holdings and authority records. The University of Kentucky Libraries has used this module since 2012, and will share specifics about the top ten (or so) projects that have been implemented using this module. Projects include several significant enhancements to bibliographic variable fields, including changes due to RDA implementation, record deletion, location changes after collections have been moved, the removal of obsolete information, the addition of local standard notes, and the addition of authorized access points.

A poorly chosen article title may make a paper difficult to discover or discourage readership when discovered, reducing an article's impact. Yet, it is unclear how the structure of a manuscript's title influences readership and impact. We used manuscript tracking data for all manuscripts submitted to the journal Functional Ecology from 2004 to 2013 and citation data for papers published in this journal from 1987 to 2011 to examine how title features changed and whether a manuscript's title structure was predictive of success during the manuscript review process and/or impact (citation) after publication. If there are web sites you use frequently, you may be able to improve your (and your patrons') interactions with them using browser extensions; this can often be done without having special access to that web site, and even without admin permissions on your computer. In this session, I'll describe a few types of browser extensions (including custom OpenSearch search boxes and Greasemonkey/Tampermonkey user scripts), and how I have used them with our OPAC and other web sites.

The inclusion of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) literature in school media centers can be controversial, but such material can be beneficial in helping LGBT students come to terms with their sexuality and with helping to foster understanding in non-LGBT students. To examine the extent of such collections in school media centers, this research conducted a checklist exercise to examine the holdings of school libraries in two very different states, one in the northeastern United States and one in the southern United States. University of Kentucky digitized materials from their chosen agency, the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The titles had already been cataloged in MARC, but they needed Dublin Core metadata for loading the data into their digital library, and also MARC for the new electronic versions, cataloging according to current RDA standards. In this talk, the presenter will describe their workflow, and some of the difficulties encountered along the way.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are key components in the emergent cyber physical systems (CPSs). They may include hundreds of spatially distributed sensors which interact to solve complex tasks going beyond their individual capabilities. Due to the limited capabilities of sensors, sensor actions cannot meet CPS requirements while controlling and coordinating the operations of physical and engineered systems. To overcome these constraints, we explore the ecosystem metaphor for WSNs with the aim of taking advantage of the efficient adaptation behavior and communication mechanisms of living organisms. The purpose of this paper is to examine the possible explanations for the slow adoption and development of online anonymity technology. The ability to remain anonymous while engaging in different activities, online is increasingly sought after by consumers with privacy concerns. The University of Kentucky (UK) is participating as a Center of Excellence (COE) for the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) in the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries‘ (ASERL) Collaborative Federal Depository Program (CFDP). This collaborative effort is designed to distribute collection development for all Federal agencies across the entire Southeast.

We will describe how all depositories are working together to ensure that there are at least two complete collections for each federal agency somewhere in the Southeast, and how UK has focused its depository collection development efforts on non-COE agencies.

Individuals use encryption to safeguard many valid and legal applications but also to hide illegal activity. Several legal cases have drawn the limits of self-incrimination under the Fifth Amendment regarding providing passwords to access illegal information content,such as child pornography. The cases illustrate that certain knowledge of evidence amounts to a compelling need for access and that a subpoena for hard drive contents is more likely to succeed than requiring a witness to provide a password.
