Intellectual Freedom And Freedom Of Speech: Three Theoretical Perspectives, Shannon M. Oltmann

Freedom of speech encompasses not only a right to express oneself but also a right to access information. This right is particularly pertinent to libraries, whose mission is often focused on enabling and expanding access to information. Libraries can support this activity with a theoretical background that draws upon the three predominant jurisprudential theories of freedom of speech: the marketplace of ideas, democratic ideals, and individual autonomy. In this article, each of these theories is explained and then applied to the library context, creating a starting place for further investigation and application of these judicial theories to information access.

“They Kind Of Rely On The Library”: School Librarians Serving Lgbt Students, Shannon M. Oltmann

This research examines school librarians’ perspectives on collecting LGBT materials. Based on qualitative interviews with thirty-one school librarians, this project found generally strong support for collecting LGBT materials. School librarians discussed serving their communities, having resources for all students, and meeting the needs of diverse students. In addition, they shared several ways that school libraries can counter bullying: creating a bully-free zone in the library, collecting LGBT and anti-bullying materials, collaborating with guidance counselors and teachers, suggesting particular books for certain students, being a supporter of students, and positioning the school library as a safe space.

As part of the Collaborative Federal Depository Program (CFDP), two pieces of software were developed to support the collection development activities of FDLP libraries in the Southeast. Most are very familiar with the ASERL Disposition Database, but some may have forgotten its quiet counter-part, the ASERL COE Database. This database is comprised of brief cataloging records that indicate holdings for all Center of Excellence (COE) libraries (and other contributing depository libraries) in the Southeast and serves as a tool for analyzing the completeness of COE collection(s) and to identify gaps.

There has long been great interest in the “collaborative stewardship” of federal government information among library deans and directors and documents librarians in the southeastern United States, who seek a new vision for managing federal depository collections that focuses on local needs and interests while also supporting these collections as a regional asset. Re-Conceiving Time In Reference And Information Services Work: A Qualitative Secondary Analysis, Jenny Bossaller, C. Sean Burns, Amy Vanscoy

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to use the sociology of time to understand how time is perceived by academic librarians who provide reference and information service (RIS).

Design/methodology/approach

This study is a qualitative secondary analysis (QSA) of two phenomenological studies about the experience of RIS in academic libraries. The authors used QSA to re-analyze the interview transcripts to develop themes related to the perception of time.

Findings

This multi-site ethnographic case study examines the spatial arrangements of two public library makerspaces. These spaces are participatory social and spatial arrangements aimed at least in part at creating physical or digital objects, which are open for the free use of all library patrons, irrespective of the types of workshops, tools, staffing, materials created, or location. Library creative places shape the possible actions and experiences of those using them through policy and practice, including the planning and implementation of spatial arrangements. Introduction. This study examines the structure of Web space in the field of library and information science using multivariate analysis of social tags from the Website, Delicious.com. A few studies have examined mathematical modelling of tags, mainly examining tagging in terms of tri-partite graphs, pattern tracing and descriptive statistics. This study is one of the few studies to employ multivariate analysis in investigating dimensions of Web spaces based on social tagging data.

Over fifty years ago an historian and a library director traveled the back roads of Kentucky (USA) with a portable microfilm camera, two lights, and a dream of preserving Kentucky’s newspapers. From their ambitions arose a successful newspaper preservation program at the University of Kentucky Libraries (UKL). Librarians and classroom faculty share the common goal of developing students’ research abilities. This session will describe a collaborative approach to performance assessment of information literacy learning outcomes, one of our general education competencies. Through collaboration with faculty, we create an assessment that aligns course requirements with information literacy learning outcomes, and that can be applied across disciplines, departments, teaching formats, and class sizes. We will model the assessment process, and participants will use our rubric to score sample responses.

Characteristics Of A Megajournal: A Bibliometric Case Study, C. Sean Burns

The term megajournal is used to describe publication platforms, like PLOS ONE, that claim to incorporate peer review processes and web technologies that allow fast review and publishing. These platforms also publish without the constraints of periodic issues and instead publish daily. We conducted a yearlong bibliometric profile of a sample of articles published in the first several months after the launch of PeerJ, a peer reviewed, open access publishing platform in the medical and biological sciences. The profile included a study of author characteristics, peer review characteristics, usage and social metrics, and a citation analysis. We found …

The University of Kentucky (UK) Libraries approved a statement in September 2013 confirming its commitment to cultivating and encouraging diversity and inclusivity in its personnel policies and in its collections, programs, and services. The library subsequently developed an Undergraduate Diversity Scholar Program to provide two students with a paid internship in the 2014/15 academic year. UK undergraduates interested in diversity issues were encouraged to apply. Applicants were evaluated based on their work experience, volunteer or service activities, recommendations from two referees, and an essay about their belief in the benefits of a diverse society. Creating Effective Instructional Materials With I-Learn, Stacey Greenwell

Given the proliferation of information and the lifelong importance of information literacy and critical thinking skills, librarians need to know how to best design information literacy instructional materials in order to help students locate, evaluate, and use information effectively. This poster builds upon an experimental research study conducted to determine how instructional materials designed using the I-LEARN model could increase student understanding and application of information literacy concepts. The findings from the research study show that I-LEARN can be particularly valuable in designing online course guides and provides an easy-to-use framework for developing reusable guide content.
