To What Ends, By Which Means?: The Development Of The Library Faith From Moral Uplift To Makerspace, Shannon Crawford Barniskis

Introduction. This paper explores the historical development of the “library faith” as a sociotechnical imaginaire necessary to the development and support of public libraries. It examines a current iteration of this faith, described in library makerspace rhetoric. The study’s purpose is to consider how the faith has changed, and whether the latest incarnation of the faith aligns with foundational library values. Method. The study looks at instances of the “library faith” to seek the instrumental means-ends chains identified in these texts. According to the CDC, autism is the fastest-growing developmental disability (2008). In the US, the prevalence is estimated at 1 in 68 births. Academic libraries need to be aware of this growing population so that we can educate library staff and be prepared to help people who learn and communicate differently. College students with disabilities face inequity when using the academic library, including the physical space, the library website, programming or lack thereof, restrictive loan periods, and resources that aren’t available in formats that they need. This poster presents the findings from my Community Resource Audit in LIS 601, which focused on teen library users. During my research, I found that teens usually seek information on the following topics: Health, Career Information, Homework Help, Reading Material, News, and General Curiosity. Along with addressing these needs, my presentation will also discuss barriers to teen access, including reasons why they might choose not to seek information. Finally, I will present my "Teen Resource Guide," which was designed to help teens conduct research on each of the aforementioned topics.

Poverty is on the rise within the United States. Public Libraries located in large cities and rural communities may be seeing an increase in usage from children who identify as low-income or poor. Using national statistics from the United States and local statistics from Lawrenceburg, Indiana , I will explain how poverty is on the rise within the United States. I will then outline how to discover local poverty statistics and how those statistics can be used to directly engage the low-income and poor population within a library district.

The Teen Toolkit: Providing Reliable Resources To Students, Jaclyn Spraetz

This poster highlights the Community Resource Audit I created on teenagers’ information seeking behaviors. By conducting a literature review as well as distributing a survey to teens, I found that while they want to be informed, they often do not seek out many different types of informational resources. To respond, I created an online guide that presents reliable open resources to help students with class projects and additional outlets to help them stay informed on current events.

The Special Collections Research Center's Education Program: A Reflection On Success, Natalie Bishop

The Special Collections Research Center's education program offers students across all departments and disciplines the opportunity to learn from primary sources. By demystifying the research process, students are provided with powerful learning opportunities. As the Education Archivist Graduate Assistant, I plan and create activities for students visiting the SCRC to facilitate student learning and improve information literacy. This fast-growing, innovative program reached 2,038 students during the 2015-2016 academic year, and this is only one of many pieces of evidence pointing to the program's success.

Citations Increase With Manuscript Length, Author Number, And References Cited In Ecology Journals, Charles W. Fox, C. E. Timothy Paine, Boris Sauterey

Most top impact factor ecology journals indicate a preference or requirement for short manuscripts; some state clearly defined word limits, whereas others indicate a preference for more concise papers. Yet evidence from a variety of academic fields indicates that within journals longer papers are both more positively reviewed by referees and more highly cited. We examine the relationship between citations received and manuscript length, number of authors, and number of references cited for papers published in 32 ecology journals between 2009 and 2012. We find that longer papers, those with more authors, and those that cite more references are cited …

In Fall 2015, local historian Yvonne Giles approached staff in the Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) at the University of Kentucky Libraries about holding a basic archives workshop for clerks and secretaries of Lexington African American Baptist churches. Staff were excited to partner with Yvonne and held the first workshop for four participants in November 2015. The second workshop, given in early March 2016, attracted 15 participants from a wide variety of local organizations. A third workshop was held in June 2016. This paper presents the results of a study utilizing a seldom-used method in Library and Information Science (LIS): Qualitative Secondary Analysis. The data is drawn from two phenomenological studies about experiences of Reference and Information Services (RIS) librarians. We discuss how we repurposed the interview data in this study, and also the strengths, weaknesses, and wider applications of the method across LIS.

Each year the University of Kentucky College of Arts and Sciences celebrates the cultural heritage of a country/region with its Passport to the World Program (PWP). The University of Kentucky Libraries International Programs has been an active contributor to PWP since 2010. We have coordinated liaison librarians’ collaboration with faculty from different departments to annotate and showcase relevant materials from the library’s collections in physical and online exhibits. We have also hosted lectures and movie screenings in which faculty introduce audiences to specific cultural features and practices.

The University of Oregon (UO) Libraries have been microfilming and preserving Oregon’s newspapers as a public service since the 1950s. However, microfilm production has become increasingly unsustainable due to the rising costs associated with maintaining microfilming equipment and supplies, and researchers increasingly prefer digital access to newspapers as opposed to microfilm access. In order to mitigate costs and meet user needs, the UO Libraries has transitioned from microfilm to digital to provide preservation and access services for current Oregon newspapers. This article outlines one in-house model for archiving and providing access to HTML-based news in the Kentucky Digital Newspaper Program (KDNP) at the University of Kentucky (UK). To allow for search and retrieval of HTML-based news in the KDNP which already contains news content digitized from analog sources, the encapsulation of HTML content using XML encoded CDATA strings read by a prototype open-source PHP viewer is described.
