The availability of powerful and sensor-enabled mobile and Internet-connected devices have enabled the advent of the ubiquitous sensor network paradigm which is providing various types of solutions to the community and the individual user in various sectors including environmental monitoring, entertainment, transportation, security, and healthcare. We explore and compare the features of wireless sensor networks and ubiquitous sensor networks and based on the differences between these two types of systems, we classify the security-related challenges of ubiquitous sensor networks. The UK Libraries International Programs has been an active contributor to PWP by collaborating with faculty and different library departments to develop unique digital collections that serve to connect viewers with the featured country or region.

Alma as a web site lets us view, search, and edit our data in a variety of ways, but what if you want to do something slightly different? Fortunately, Ex Libris provides API access that allows you to add specialized functionality to your Alma workflows, or even access Alma's data through other web sites. In this presentation I will go over the basics of APIs, demonstrate how you can learn about and test them using the Ex Libris Developer Network, and show some examples of how they can be used to extend Alma's functionality.

Coming from Voyager, after over 16 years of setting up and updating calendars for a multi-library university, configuring the calendars in Alma was confusing. The calendars in Alma use the standard hours for major terms as a starting point. Exceptions are defined by “Closing” the library to shorten the hours and “Opening” the library to extend the hours, instead of giving the hours of operation on the days when exceptions occur. The University of Kentucky has everything from a 24 x 5+ main library to a 40 hour a week storage facility. Library hours change between semesters and do different …

Flattening Funds: Using Alma Fund Structure & Reporting Codes, Kate Seago

The University of Kentucky had been on Voyager since 2001. We had built a complex fund structure using reporting funds to map funds accurately over to the University’s SAP system and provide break downs by subject and format. In addition, the Acquisitions Department Head had been relying on an access report and a code in the invoice note field to provide accurate ARL statistics. When the Libraries migrated to Alma in January 2016, it quickly became apparent that the fund structure would need substantial reworking to be functional in Alma. National statistics are collected and reported by libraries for a variety of reasons. The presenter was recently asked to report statistics about her library's collections for ARL, AAHSL, ABET, CEAL and IPEDS, each of whom ask a variety of questions about disparate data points. Her institution recently migrated from Voyager to Alma, and she found that the data is not comparable between the prior and subsequent years to this migration. Since 1958, the Archives of the Southern Sociological Society have been housed in the Special Collections Research Center in the University of Kentucky Libraries. The collection includes official minutes, correspondence, newsletters, membership lists, photographs, and other official documents generated by the Society and dating from the Society's founding in 1935 to the present. These records of historical value have been provided by presidents, secretaries, treasurers, committee chairs, executive officers, and other Society officials so that the Archives may be available to scholars who wish to explore the history of the Society and the development of Sociology in the Southern United …

Background: It is commonly reported by editors that it has become harder to recruit reviewers for peer review and that this is because individuals are being asked to review too often and are experiencing reviewer fatigue. However, evidence supporting these arguments is largely anecdotal.

Main body: We examine responses of individuals to review invitations for six journals in ecology and evolution. The proportion of invitations that lead to a submitted review has been decreasing steadily over 13 years (2003–2015) for four of the six journals examined, with a cumulative effect that has been quite substantial (average decline from 56% of …

Over the last few years, identity-based cryptosystem (IBC) has attracted widespread attention because it avoids the high overheads associated with public key certificate management. However, an unsolved but critical issue about IBC is how to revoke a misbehaving user. There are some revocable identity-based encryption schemes that have been proposed recently, but little work on the revocation problem of identity-based signature has been undertaken so far. One approach for revocation in identity-based settings is to update users' private keys periodically, which is usually done by the key generation center (KGC). The Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History at the University of Kentucky is recognized around the world as a leader and innovator in the collection and preservation of oral histories. The more than 9,000 interviews in our collection provide a unique look into Kentucky and American history.

While the Center for Oral History has developed an excellent stand-alone catalog of the collections, projects and interviews in the collection utilizing Drupal and DACS, we wanted to provide discovery through our online catalog, our discovery system (InfoKat Discovery) and WorldCat.

U.S. Newspaper Editors’ Ratings Of Social Media As Influential News Sources, Masahiro Yamamoto, Seungahn Nah, Deborah S. Chung

Social media, as one key platform for citizen journalism, are becoming a useful news-gathering tool for journalists. Based on data from a nationwide probability sample of newspaper editors in the United States, this study investigates the extent to which newspaper editors consider social media an influential news source. Results show that variations in editors’ ratings of social media as a news source were related to multiple levels of influence, including professional journalistic experience, organization size, community structural pluralism, and citizen journalism credibility. Implications are discussed for the roles of social media in news production.

For more than thirty years the United States Agricultural Information Network (USAIN) has been a major player in the dissemination and preservation of agricultural information. Beginning as a network of institutions, USAIN early on restructured to an individual-based organization. As a community of practice, USAIN members conduct work through committees and interest groups and maintain close communication through a variety of outlets. Biennial conferences offer face-to-face networking opportunities, and conference scholarships have been successful in engaging potential new members directly in organizational activities. Recent popular and academic discussions regarding the Internet have raised the question of whether and how networked intermediaries have a (dis)integrating social effects. In this study, we use public records of configurations of Internet filters in Alabama public schools and libraries to show how different institutions implement nominally consistent content standards inconsistently. We argue that these varying implementations are both significant and troubling for two reasons: first, they overreach the stated goals of the legislation with which they in principle comply; second, they may contribute to a broader epistemic breakdown by fragmenting the kind of information made available through and …

This paper describes the possible approaches to encouraging diversity within the workplace that are available to all professional organizations, including the American Association of Law Libraries [AALL]. Part I reviews the basic terms: discrimination, bias, and diversity. Reasons for pursuing diversity in the workplace are discussed in Part II. Two instrumental justifications and one intrinsic rationale reveal the range of motivations behind these projects. Each rationale supports its characteristic form of diversity: reflective, substantive, and cognitive. Because the kind of diversity determines the anticipated outcome, disagreement over progress may be the result of expecting different kinds of diversity. Clarity on …
