It’S Okay To Be Gay…: A Librarian’S Journey To Acceptance And Activism, Jason D. Phillips

This chapter presents the deeply personal and professional journey of Jason D. Phillips, an academic librarian, as he navigates the challenges of embracing his identity as a gay man within the conservative environments of Southern academia. Beginning with a facetious reflection that library school "made him gay," Phillips recounts how his education and early professional experiences became transformative, offering acceptance, community, and the impetus to come out. His story unfolds across pivotal moments—from confronting internalized homophobia and grappling with visibility in conservative workplaces, to finding mentorship, building GLBT library collections, and becoming an advocate for inclusion and intellectual freedom. Try To Be Complete On Something: Tips On Building A Highly Specialized Subject Collection, Tim Bottorff

Wise and careful selection of materials remains among the most important and enduring duties of the librarian. However, once one moves beyond general principles learned in library school, one quickly learns that real collection development is difficult and time-consuming. This is especially true in a specialized subject library, where traditional collection development methods do not always yield good results. The author discusses experience in developing a specialized collection in hospitality management materials, but the tips in this article will appeal to a wide variety of librarians seeking to build a specialized, subject-specific collection.

Information fluency refers to the ability to recognize information needs and to gather, evaluate, and communicate information appropriately. In this study, I treat "information fluency" as both an overall competency and as a collection of knowledge and skills. The purpose of this study is to explore the specific workplace information fluency skills valued by employers of technical communicators, to find out how instructors perceive and teach these skills, and to suggest how these findings can inform our teaching practices. Within the framework of qualitative methodology, this study employs two data-collection instruments, including a content analysis of online job recruitment postings …

Branching Out: Communication And Collaboration Among Librarians At Multi-Campus Institutions, Tim Bottorff, Robbin Glaser, Andrew Todd, Barbara Alderman

Communication and collaboration are vital aspects of 21st century librarianship, particularly for librarians in branch and regional settings who are often separated from their system colleagues by both physical distance and administrative structures. For this study, the authors conducted an exploratory survey to examine collaboration, communication, and networking behaviors and perceptions among librarians in multi-campus academic library systems. Results of this investigative study will lead to better understanding of these issues within the profession, suggest possible approaches and solutions for better models of communication and collaboration, and lay the groundwork for future research on these topics.

Double Duty: Processing And Exhibiting The Children's Home Society Of Florida Collection As An Archivist And Public Historian, April Anderson-Zorn

The Children's Home Society of Florida, often referred to as "Florida's Greatest Charity", is the state's oldest non profit welfare agency. Founded in 1902, the society was instrumental in creating and reforming child welfare laws as well as helping countless children in the state of Florida find loving homes. This paper focuses on the archival processing of the Children's Home Society of Florida Collection papers and the creation of a subsequent web exhibit. The role of archivist and public historian is examined to see how each profession works toward a common goal.

It is difficult for Web designers to step into users' shoes. Affinity Mapping provides insight into user ideas. WebCT is the most widely used package online course creation, management, and delivery. Originally designed to help non-technical faculty deliver semester-length courses over the web, WebCT is now used by libraries to deliver various types of library instruction. The University of Central Florida licensed WebCT in 1997, and the Library created the WebLUIS Tutorial in WebCT by 1998. This presentation overviews the UCF Libaries' use of WebCT for a library OPAC tutorial and reports on a 5-question survey posted to a library email list.
