The Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) currently uses three social media channels, CALA Facebook, WeChat, and YouTube. In order to improve their presence and better serve the CALA members, CALA's first social media survey was conducted at the end of 2016 to seek feedback from its members and friends. This poster will present the background information for the survey, its methodology, findings, recommendations and follow-up. 18 questions were compiled, added to LimeSurvey and distributed to the CALA members via its Listserv. Librarians and instructional designers formed an informal partnership to promote low-cost textbook solutions in the absence of formal initiatives at a public, four-year institution. Learn how we negotiated institutional barriers such as bookstore contract prohibitions and protected revenue streams. Our case examples describe solutions and workflows undertaken to transform course materials, in addition to activities being pursued to make textbook affordability an institutional priority.

This workshop covered a variety of copyright considerations when considering Open Educational Resources. This included basic aspects of copyright for use of content materials in courses. It focused primarily on copyright considerations for OERs, including selecting materials that can legally be incorporated into open textbooks and other open content. Against the backdrop of 40 Florida state colleges and universities transitioning together from Aleph to Sierra/Encore-Duet in 2016-2017, the University of Central Florida is planning to improve patron and librarian experience at its 10 joint-use libraries across central Florida. Joint-use libraries reside at a state college where UCF classes are being taught. Collections are shared, and services are provided to patrons at both sites, but acquisitions, cataloging, circulation, collection management, and resource sharing are too complicated. Florida Statewide Symposium: Best Practices in Undergraduate Research

Scientific Process is a required course for all undergraduate science majors at FGCU. In this course, students develop original research proposals on topics of their interest. Information literacy skills are critical as students must be able to use multiple sources of information to develop their proposals. Biology and library faculty have collaborated to add instruction and assignments addressing research question development, search strategy, citation management, and more. Our goal is to improve students’ information literacy skills as well as the quality and quantity of citations in their final proposals. We will present on this initiative and our preliminary assessment results.

Librarians at the University of Central Florida created their Research Lifecycle (RLC) to illustrate the research process, highlight campus-wide support services, and identify unmet needs. This session will explore the development of the RLC model, provide an in-depth analysis of the graphic that was created, and explain how the RLC contributed to the developing Scholarly Communication model at UCF. The speakers will also review the steps taken to vet the RLC with faculty and other campus units and emphasize other outcomes such as building stronger relationships with key partners, as well as highlighting spinoff projects.
