As a non-profit organization for librarians of color, Chinese American Librarians Association has members from all over the world. Materials that document the evolution of the organization and its scholarly activities pertain valuable information. There was an urgent need to establish an organizational digital scholarship repository to preserve these materials as well as to serve as a hub that provides valuable research information.

The Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) has created several social media channels since 2012 with CALA members and friends participating from around the world, including the CALA's Facebook public page, WeChat space, YouTube Channel, LinkedIn Group and the "CALA Members and Friends" Facebook private group. This poster will introduce these channels and discuss the CALA Social Media Group’s efforts in promoting them to better serve the users’ needs and connect its members and friends nationally and internationally. In today’s academic publishing environment, open access journals have become an increasingly common and used venue for publication by STEM faculty and researchers. Subject librarians at one of the largest public research institutions in the United States are tailoring workshops geared towards faculty to create awareness of predatory publishing. Our research question involved identifying STEM faculty at our institution who have published in questionable journals and bringing this to their attention through a series of faculty workshops.

The Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA)’s Academic Resources & Repository System (CALASYS) is an important initiative to curate its members’ research works, the organizational archival materials, and other cultural resources. CALASYS uses Omeka, an open source web-publishing platform, to store, link, display, and exhibit its collections. During its development, several aspects of the platform have been significantly improved due to the effort of the CALASYS Group and the CALA members.

Reputational Threats Online: Social Media As A Simultaneous Agent Of Crisis And Tool For Response And Resolution In The Case Study Of An American Academic Library, Margaret C. Stewart, Maria Atilano

International Crisis and Risk Communication Conference

This paper details a reputational threat to an American academic library where a viral social media post and associated negative comments misrepresented the institution and brand’s values. Immediately, the marketing librarian responsible for social media responded to the threat by engaging directly with the library consumers, sharing content and information with the broader online community, and reinforcing the library’s values and commitment to consumers. While the resolution to the crisis was mostly favourable, the event was unanticipated and invited a keen learning opportunity that is documented in this case study. Open Access texts are a way to offer content for free, but humanities assembling this type of text in the humanities is often restricted by copyright and intellectual property. Librarians and instructional designers (IDs) from a university in the U.S. will describe the partnership formed to promote no-cost textbook solutions (OER, library-sourced) in the face of a restrictive environment. The institution is divided in two tiers: the President's Office, which oversees non-academic functions such as Business Services, and the Provost's Office, which is responsible for teaching and learning. This creates an inherent tension concerning course materials and revenue, troubling the conception of education as a fundamentally shared practice. Our group aimed to promote change at the university level, while also collaborating to facilitate the efforts of faculty.
