This seasonal exhibit features materials from the McGovern Historical Center’s San Jacinto Lung Association Records. During the holidays they would sell Christmas Seals to fund their efforts in fighting tuberculosis.

The Hilde Bruch, MD papers contains reprints, books, office files, patient records. The early gift of books and reprints, and the posthumous donation of books and papers have been integrated into the larger group of office records, making the total size of the collection 56 cubic feet. The arrangement includes office files, patient records dating from the 1940's, correspondence from colleagues as well as hundreds of letters from lay persons acquainted with Dr. Bruch's work on eating disorders. Collection contains two media programs on mental health created by Julia Arnold Schnapp and Bill Schnapp. Program on VHS video cassette, "In Their Shoes" (1998) produced by the Mental Needs Council of Harris County. Program on 16mm film, "Help Wanted" (1958) produced by Mental Health Study Group of the Junior League of Houston. A paper script is available for the 1958 film. See more at MS 238.

The Philip S. Hench, MD, papers (MS 076) is 100 cubic feet of papers, correspondence, reprints, research documents, newspaper articles, photographs, glass slides, sheet music, and audiovisual materials. The collection contains Dr. Hench's personal and professional documents from his childhood, 1896, to his death, 1965. These papers provide information about his family and life, including his service in World War II, his contributions to medical research in rheumatic diseases, his Nobel Award and other awards. Next time you come to the library, take a look at the exhibit cases by the Rare Books Room corridor. The two exhibit cases embedded in the walls of the corridor now feature highlights from the McGovern Historical Center (MHC) collections and brief overviews of major collecting areas.

The other half of the exhibit focuses on the MHC’s archival collections. Featuring archival materials in a variety of formats—photos, films, drawings, and more.

Ms 002 Guide To The Ernst William Bertner Papers (1917-1952), Ernst William Bertner (1908-1978)

Manuscript Finding Aids

Dr. Bertner, one of founders of the Texas Medical Center in Houston Texas, was its first President from 1945 to 1950. He was also the acting director for the first four years of the existence of the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Bertner was active in leading many medical organizations and institutions in the first half of the 20th century in Texas and in the nation. These papers provide information about his life, and to the development of the Texas Medical Center and its institutions. See more at MS 002.

Ms 249 Guide To Lucile Baird Papers (1925-1927), Lucille Baird Rogillo (1903-1992)

The Lucile Baird papers contains 13 photographs and 4 letters related to the Baptist Memorial Hospital (later Memorial Hospital). The photographs depict hospital staff, interns, nurses, and students. Robert Jolly and Lillian Wilson Burnett Jolly appear in a few photographs, and they are the correspondents with Lucile Baird. Letters include Christmas greeting cards and Baptist Hospital stationary. Photographs and letters appear to have annotations by the creator as well as her niece, Carol Wilde. See more at MS 249.

Ms 242 Guide To The John Z. Bowers, Md Papers (1947-1983), John Z. Bowers (1913-1993)

Manuscript Finding Aids

This collection includes photographs, manuscripts, and reprints related to Dr. John Bowers' involvement with the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission (ABCC). Of particular note are 58 black-and-white photographs of Nagasaki, Japan, taken by Captain Shields Warren (MC) in 1947. There is also a photograph showing Dr. Bowers alongside Carl Tessmer reviewing plans for the ABCC laboratory-clinic in Hiroshima, and another featuring the groundbreaking of the Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF). A third set of photographs depicts Berlin, Germany during the Cold War. See more at MS 242.

Manuscript Finding Aids

This collection consists of photographs, clippings, publications, a thesis review, and correspondence relating to the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission (ABCC). Most of the materials date from 1948 to 1962, although some items are undated. Cavagnaro's review of "War Guilt and Medical Research" is from 1992. Collection materials generally originated in Japan or discuss conditions there. See more at MS 243.

The Leta Denham, RN papers contains a short handwritten family history, scrapbook segments, photographs, a school yearbook from 1918, newspaper clippings, a nursing cap, and other items related to Leta Elizabeth Denham's nursing education at Baptist Sanitarium and Hospital Training School for Nurses from 1918 to 1919. The collection documents Dr. Elliott's career through committee and administrative reports, correspondence, legal papers, and legislative material. Also included are scrapbooks, personal memos, manuscripts, photographs, and audio tapes. There are copies of a number of Dr. Elliot's speeches, as well as materials relating to honors he received.

Manuscript Finding Aids

The Howard B. Hamilton, MD, papers, MS 66, includes material from 1945-1997 related to the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission (ABCC) and the Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF). Hamilton was the Chief of Clinical Laboratories for the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission from 1956 until its dissolution in 1975. He served in the same capacity for the Radiation Effects Research Foundation, which succeeded the ABCC, until 1984. This collection encompasses this period of time in Dr. Hamilton's career, as well as his related scholarly work after his retirement from RERF. See more at MS 066.

Institutional Finding Aids

The University of Texas Speech and Hearing Institute records contains annual reports, information booklets, catalogs, brochures, reports, budget documents, and advisory board information. There are also three scrapbooks--one with contents from approximately 1964-1967, one from approximately 1973-1974, one from approximately 1991-1992. There are a number of photographs and newspaper clippings in the scrapbooks, whose pages have been dis-bound and placed in individual folders. Finally, the collection includes plaques, paperweights, and two VHS tapes. See more at IC 012.
