The Burden Of Care: Cultural Taxation Of Women Of Color Librarians On The Tenure-Track, Tarida Anantachai, Camille Chesley

This chapter shares findings of a study aimed at investigating the lived experiences of women of color librarians in promotion- and tenure-track positions. It examines how one’s identity as a women of color and the process of navigating the inequities embedded within the predominantly white systems of higher education and librarianship impact the everyday work, sense of identity, and overall career advancement of librarians of color. It also discusses the implications these ultimately present on the recruitment, mentorship, and retention of diverse faculty in academic libraries.

The potential of things or objects generating and processing data about day-to-day activities of its users has given a new level of popularity to Internet of Things (IoT) among its consumers. Even though the popularity has seen a steady increase, the use of IoT devices has been slow and abandonment rapid. To build on the existing literature and advance our understanding of the sociological processes of use and non-use of these devices, this paper presents results from the survey of 489 IoT users. Data-Driven Music Score Approval Plans: Working With Data And Vendors To Get What You Need, Rachel Fox Von Swearingen

Approval profiles for music scores are detailed plans that require local data analysis, assessment, and coordination between vendors and librarians. This panel will explore the process of developing, assessing, and editing approval criteria, with a focus on making evidence-based decisions.

Librarian experiences presented will include setting up an approval plan for the first time and adjusting an established approval plan with new criteria. Local data sources discussed include use data from circulation and interlibrary loan histories, institutional performance history from concert and recital programs, e-resource availability, and faculty input from surveys and interviews. Purpose

As change creates more uncertainty for library practitioners, graduate library education needs to explore how to best prepare students to manage ambiguity through new approaches to identifying and solving challenging problems. We advocate for incorporating design into graduate library education.

First, we discuss the need for a design approach to librarianship. We then introduce the nature of design thinking and philosophy, and discuss the ways in which it is already present in librarianship. Toward A Design Epistemology For Librarianship, Rachel I. Clarke

The design of information tools and services is an integral component of librarianship, yet American librarianship has self-identified as a social science for more than 100 years. This paper suggests an alternative epistemological perspective to the scientific tradition in librarianship: design epistemology. The paper discusses key elements that comprise design epistemology and presents examples of manifestations of these elements in librarianship. Analysis reveals that librarianship has much in common with design epistemology, yet the field lacks explicit acknowledgement of design as a fundamental epistemological framework. The paper concludes with a call for reconceptualizing librarianship as a design discipline.

Learning on and through social media is becoming a cornerstone of lifelong learning, creating places not only for accessing information, but also for finding other self-motivated learners. Such is the case for Reddit, the online news sharing site that is also a forum for asking and answering questions. We studied learning practices found in ‘Ask’ subreddits AskScience, Ask_Politics, AskAcademia, and AskHistorians to develop a coding schema for informal learning. While developments in information technology enable exciting new potentials, they may, in the process, inadvertently violate important values such as autonomy or privacy. Responsible, ethical approaches to technology warrant the use of critical perspectives in evaluating our technological practices and artifacts. Key among such artifacts are information standards, influential documents that represent and perpetuate community agreements on ideal practice. In critically examining standards, values represent a promising conceptual lens. This paper advances the use of value analysis on information standards, particularly those devoted to knowledge organization. Value analysis is a methodological approach that guides the elicitation of values from artifacts. …

This article provides an overview of the changing role of the library in scholarly publishing and the rising phenomenon of library-press collaboration. It examines, through a literature review and two case studies, how and why the library has taken on this new role in scholarly publishing and created partnerships with university presses. The case studies describe current library-press partnerships from the perspective of institutional context, publishing services, and respective roles and responsibilities. Authors also briefly discuss the possible future of the library-press partnership in scholarly publishing.

In this article, we argue in favor of a macro-societal approach to protect people from the potential harms of personal information online. In the tension between information and privacy, “the right to be forgotten” is not an appropriate solution. Such a micro, individual-based answer puts the burden of protection on each person instead of on external entities that can abuse such knowledge. The personal responsibility to delete personal data is challenging because of the leakage of data that happens through the connections we have with others, many of whom do not share the same privacy preferences. Research Information Management (RIM) is the aggregation, curation, and utilization of information about research. It is emerging as a part of scholarly communications practice in many university libraries and is a service that is typically provided in collaboration with a university’s research enterprise. RIM may interoperate with and support research repositories, researcher profiles, awards management workflows, internal reports, and external assessment. Universities have diverse goals for implementing RIM, and case studies from the US and Australia will be demonstrated in this talk.

Flipping The Classroom For Endnote Instruction, Roman Koshykar

Presentation on how to efficiently offer EndNote instruction to students using streaming tutorials. The presenter discusses the need for asynchronous instruction to meet student needs, technology considered that did not work for this purpose, and the successful solution to this problem. The presentation includes information on software selection, usage data, a timeline for implementation, and future goals. The advantages of this "flipping the classroom" are outlined.

Research institutions have increasingly strong needs to manage the reputations of their research portfolios. From primary investigators, to awarded grants, scholarly output and related media mention, universities need to be able to retrieve and integrate information about their research endeavors in order to successfully showcase impact at an institutional level. However, all too often this information is siloed and not easily discoverable, retrievable, or reusable. A Hook And A Book: Rewards As Motivators In Public Library Summer Reading Programs (In Children And Libraries), Ruth V. Small, Marilyn P. Arnone, Erin Bennett

This peer-reviewed paper  appeared in Children and Libraries and explored the effects of extrinsic rewards on young participants (entering sixth through ninth grade) in public library summer reading programs in two library systems in different states. Twenty-two of sixty total participants volunteered to be interviewed, and twenty-four parents of those sixty participants volunteered to participate in an online survey. Additionally, 292 public librarians who directed summer reading programs in urban, suburban, and rural libraries nationwide volunteered to take part in an online survey that sought their perspectives on how incentives were used in their summer reading programs. This paper offers a information policy perspective on learning analytics, joining work by others on ethics and privacy in the management of learning analytics data [8], but extending to consider how issues play out across the information lifecycle and in the formation of policy.
