Collection Security Issues In Malaysian Academic Libraries: An Exploratory Survey, Abass Atiku Maidabino

The collection is the library's most valuable asset and it needs to be protected from security breaches. Collection security is an important issue for academic libraries.This study explores the major collection security issues related to library collections in Malaysian university libraries. The study reveals the measures adopted by the Malaysian libraries to ensure effective collections security governance. The findings indicate that main breaches of collection security are book theft, damage, mutilation, or defacement; books attacked by insects or worms; and non-return of borrowed materials. Demographic Variables And Self-Efficacy As Factors Influencing Career Commitment Of Librarians In Federal University Libraries In Nigeria, Gboyega Adio, S.O. Popoola

This research examines the influence demographic variables and self-efficacy have on career commitment of librarians in federal university libraries in Nigeria. The standardized self-efficacy scale developed by Schwarzer and Jerusalem (1993) and revalidated in 2007 with a reliability coefficient of 0.81 was used for data collection. The outcome of the research showed that demographic variables and self-efficacy had significant influence on career commitment of librarians working in federal university libraries in Nigeria (F (9; 352) = 11.058, p < 0.05). The study revealed that demographic variables and self-efficacy accounted for 20% (adj R 2 = 0.2000) in variability of career commitment of the respondents.

"Can't Anyone Be A Teacher Anyway?": Student Perceptions Of Academic Librarians As Teachers, Mark Aaron Polger, Karen Okamoto

The study explores student perceptions of the academic librarian as teachers. A questionnaire was distributed to 500 students at two City University of New York colleges. Convenience and snowball sampling were employed to reach as many respondents as possible. Questionnaires were administered following a library instruction class and in the campus cafeteria. Contrary to results from previous studies, many respondents consider librarians to be teachers.

The study focused on the exploitation of computer facilities for internal income generation in Nigerian academic libraries. It is a comparative study of Hezekiah Oluwasanmi Library, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife and Kenneth Dike Library, University of Ibadan. Questionnaires and interviews were used to obtain data from the head of libraries and librarians who were directly involved in the section where internal income are generated.The performances of the two libraries in this regard are compared and recommendations were made on how to generate money internally through various services, since library is persistently facing economic problems in carrying out their services

This research seeks to demonstrate a relationship between quantitative and qualitative evaluation of Kenneth Dike Library collection in the sciences. This paper attempts to identify and establish spontaneous group decision making in collaborative learning as a new research direction, with particular attention to collaborative learning in distributed online environments. After a brief introduction, related concepts and theories are examined for differentiation of interpretation. The concept of “spontaneous group decision making” is established in the context of collaborative learning. Literature review is conducted to glean anecdotal observations from past research to identify potentially influential factors, and a diagram framework is proposed to charter the territory. The study analyzed the use of Internet services by faculty members of Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel University of Agriculture and Technology in Meerut , Uttar Pradesh, India. Sixty structured questionnaires were distributed among faculty members of Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel University of Agriculture and Technology. Faculty gave information on Internet usage, sources of information about websites, favorite search engines, problems faced by users, satisfaction with the Internet for research purposes, and facilities infrastructure available in the libraries.

The requirement to do research and publication to gain promotion and tenure is growing Nigerian academic libraries. This study surveys the literature on this topic and reports on a survey of librarians at one institution, including their research output, educational background, attendance at conferences, and barriers to doing research. Lack of education and training and lack of time were the primary factors having a negative effect on research output.

This study is a survey of access to health information by people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in Nigeria. A questionnaire was used to collect data from 120 respondents. The data obtained were analysed using simple percentages. The study reveals that libraries are not used as sources of health information by PLWHA. The study recommends that libraries should repackage information for PLWHA, educate users, and organise awareness/outreach services in collaboration with NGOs on the subject of HIV/AIDS.

Information is a key element for decision making and development. People need information to make the best use of the resources and solve problems. In Bangladesh, most people (80 percent) live in villages and Community Information Service (CIS) facilities remain low. Different organizations provide information services but these services are not always made in accordance with ommunity needs. This article discusses initiatives taken in Bangladesh and explores how public libraries can play a key role in developing CIS.

This study investigated the information-seeking behaviors of polytechnic students. Five hundred students were randomly selected and a questionnaire was used to gathering data. The findings revealed that academic information is the major reason why students seek information and the library is the major source of information.

The paper evaluates the success of programmes of the Federal Government of Nigeria in improving funding of university libraries. The World Bank loan, 10 percent direct allocation, and the Education Trust Fund (ETF) interventions were found to be beneficial to library acquisitions. Interventions like the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) and National Universities Commission (NUC) central book purchase scheme as beneficial. Prudent management of funds at Hezekiah Oluwasanmi library has been of help since the stoppage of direct allocation from NUC. It is recommended that the government should involve end users of intervention programmes in planning and execution of future programmes.

This study evaluates the educational and information needs and information-seeking behaviour of the faculty members of the Islamia University of Bahawalpur. Questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were used with one hundred faculty members. One hundred fifty questionnaires were distributed and 100 returned. The data showed that most faculty (76%) consider the Internet the most useful source of information, along with books, journals, and informal channels. The teachers from Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities, and Islamic Learning also want up-to-date resources relevant to their fields via a digital library. Organizing events with outside speakers can bring lasting benefits to students, faculty, and the community. This article highlights the need for advance preparation when organizing an event. Librarians must clearly define objectives to maximize participation and ensure that events are linked to courses. When real-world events are linked to students' academic experience, they are more actively engaged and can be more involved in their studies. This study assessed the quality of library services rendered, identified faculty expectations of librarians, and ascertained the disparity in user expectations between private and public universities. Three hundred questionnaires were administered to respondents from Covenant University and the University of Lagos, and two hundred and forty were completed. The study revealed that the quality of services currently rendered is higher in the private university than in the public university.

This paper investigated students’ use of the campus wide network in accessing library resources and services in Nnamdi Azikiwe Library, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Nnamdi Azikiwe Library was selected because it is a University Library that has adopted wireless connectivity services so as to satisfy the needs of its community. Questionnaire was adopted as an instrument for data collection and was randomly distributed to the students. 1000 students selected using stratified random sampling, constituted the sample size out of a population of 39,000 students. In Fall 2009, University of the Pacific's (Stockton, CA) Health Sciences Branch (HSB) Library initiated a reference training program to develop staff competencies and skills in order to promote a uniform level of reference expertise. Training was delivered in a wiki format, informed by constructivist principles. Constructivism views learning as a dynamic process-- learners actively construct knowledge, which is built upon earlier experiences. This article aims to bring into light the prevailing evaluation culture in university libraries of Pakistan with specific reference to physical collections. Using survey method, an attempt has been made to explore the status and practices of collection evaluation in university libraries of Pakistan. The study finds out that despite all the insistence for making systematic evaluation at international level, this practice is not common in Pakistan.
