Rural community development is a major issue for developing countries. Much attention has been given Information and Communication Technology (ICT) projects to connect rural communities with the global network. However, ICT resistance is a deterring factor in addressing the digital divide in developing countries. Academic Library Websites In Bangalore City, India: An Evaluative Study, P.V. Konnur, S. Rajani, M. Madhusudhan

This study evaluates the content and quality of academic library websites. An evaluation checklist is used as a tool for evaluation of academic library websites. The checklist is divided into five main parts followed by Rating Table. The quantitative pointing system (ten point scale) and five point rating scales are used to evaluate and rank the websites. The study reveals that very few (16 percent) websites provide information about the date of last updating. Similarly very few (20 percent) websites provide links to other web reference sites and a moderate number (40 percent) have feedback forms for comments. On the …

Analysis Of Bibliographic References By Textbook Authors In Nigerian Polytechnics, Nelson Edewor, Ufuoma Omosor

The study analyzed references listed by textbook authors from Nigerian polytechnics. The educational qualifications, subject background, and institutional affiliations of authors and publishers of textbooks were examined. Documentary research design was adopted for this study. A total of 102 books were examined using the availability sampling technique. Data gathered were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The study revealed that a significant majority of the textbooks were filled with citation errors. Findings revealed that a majority of the textbooks used the American Psychological association (APA) format of referencing. Further analysis revealed that a significant number of textbooks had no references at all. …

This study examines the use of Cybercafés/Internet resources and the evaluation of their usefulness. About eight Cybercafés located in the university community were used in this study. Questionnaires, interviews with the Cybercafé owners, staff and users as well as personal observations made during inspection of these cafés were used in this study. Library 2.0 may be well-established for librarians in developed countries but is newer in developing countries. This pilot study explores the awareness of Library 2.0 among academic librarians in selected universities in Southwest Nigeria. This was a cross-sectional study which used a structured self- administered questionnaire to obtain information on awareness of library 2.0, perceived support, and willingness to participate in the ongoing global discussion among 31 participants randomly selected from a total of 33 universities owned by federal and state governments and private organizations with a total of about 200 qualified academic librarians. The paper examines resource sharing among libraries and it benefirts for legal research and administration of justice in Nigeria.Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is a critical requirement resource sharing. The use of Z39.50 as an aid to resource sharing is discussed.Categories of resource sharing and the benefits to be derived from each category by the cooperating libraries are also highlighted. Factors that hinder effective resource sharing are identified and analyzed. Recommendations are given for the initiation and promotion of resource sharing among law libraries in Nigeria.

The 21st century is characterized by advancements in information and communication technology (ICT), including the Internet. Final year students of Covenant University implore the use of the Internet in writing their projects. This paper examines the extent of accessibility and use of the Internet by these students and the impact the Internet has on their projects. A questionnaire was used for data collection. The ICT revolution has permeated every profession and all areas of human endeavour. Professions such as law, medicine , engineering, and library and information science are adjusting to the ICT environment through re-tooling, retraining, and curriculum revision. The purpose of this study is to explore the impact of ICT on the student industrial work experience scheme (SIWES) of library and information science students. It traces the historical development of the scheme, the ICT development trends in LIS, and the challenges this development brings to SIWES. Strategies to absorb this shock created by ICT are offered.

An obsolescence study is one of the main areas of bibliometrics in library and information science. The study attempts to discover the obsolescence rate of psychology literature cited in the 141 doctoral theses awarded by the S.V. University Tirupati, Osmania University, Hyderabad, and Andhra University, Visakhapattanam, from 1963-2005. Half-life of journal citations in psychology was found to be 14 years and 19 years for book citations.

The study is based on 169 librarians working in thirteen university libraries in the universities of six states located in the South-South zone of Nigeria. With the advent of ICT and new ways of creating, storing, organizing, packaging, and providing information, the role of library and information science education has changed. Library schools in universities in Nigeria must undergo systematic and strategic reform. This paper attempts to establish what reforms are required and how they can be implemented. It identifies the role of the Nigerian Library Association, the National Universities Commission (NUC), and other stakeholders, and suggests strategies for sustainable reform.

This research investigates the preservation and conservation of information-bearing materials in libraries in Nigeria. A survey drew its population from the staff of Delta State University (DELSU) Library, Abraka and Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) Library, Effurun. The results show that information-bearing materials are at high risk of deterioration. There is no written preservation and conservation policy, no security policy, no personnel adequately trained in conservation, and lack of conservation facilities and equipment.

Conflict is prevalent everywhere and in every facet of life the world over, in many different countries. The Niger Delta case is no exception. This paper attempts to define conflict and conflict resolution, trace the origin of conflicts in the region and the efforts made so far to ameliorate the situation. Emphasis is placed on dialogue rather than violence. This study investigated the availability and use of audiovisual and electronic resources by distance learning students at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). A questionnaire was administered tothe distance learning students selected across the various departments of the NOUN. The findings revealed that even though NOUN made provision for audiovisual and electronic resources for students' use, a majority of the audiovisual and electronic resources are available through personal provision by the students.The study also revealed regular use of audiovisual and electronic resources by the distance learning students. This study investigated the use of library catalogue in Niger Delta University library. The study employed descriptive research method and questionnaire as a research instrument to generate the data. The analysis revealed that 168 (51 percent) of the users were not aware of library catalogue, and 160 (54 percent) had never used the catalogue. The study also showed that 209 (71.7 percent) encountered difficulties in using the catalogue because of lack of proper education and, as a result, 202 (68.7 percent) of the users resolved to used browsing/reading through the shelves method to locate books. Young people are vital to the future of any nation. Thirty-four percent of the people of Nigeria are between 10 and 24 years old. Poverty, unemployment, lack of infrastructure, and other factors have aggravated the problem of youth restiveness, lawlessness, and violence. Information in general and libraries in particular can help young people become productive and educated adult citizens. This article describes the problems of youth restiveness in Nigeria and makes recommendations on the role of information and libraries in its alleviation.

This paper examines the role of libraries in the preservation and accessibility of the indigenous knowledge in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The survey method was used for the study and data were collected with the questionnaire from 82 respondents drawn from six libraries in the region. Niger Delta people use indigenous knowledge to improve agricultural production, acquire education and basic skills, conserve their natural environment, and resolve conflicts. Libraries in the Niger Delta region do not manage indigenous knowledge resources effectively. A sample of seventy faculty from the University of Karachi Faculty of Arts were surveyed. The study explores the University of Karachi's facilities for using electronic resources. Some departments have fully-equipped computer labs, while some have a few computers. A few departments also provide computers to individual academics in their offices. An Internet connection is available to 92.9 percent of the departments. A majority of the academics have computer skills that facilitate the use of electronic resources, although a majority have little knowledge of electronic resources, which is not a positive aspect of the findings. Internet Use Among Faculty Members In The Changing Higher Education Environment At The Islamia University Of Bahawalpur, Pakistan, Rubina Bhatti

This study identifies patterns of Internet use by faculty members at the Islamia University of Bahawalpur. It investigates purposes for use, Internet resources used, places of use, and the problems faced while using the Internet. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from the faculty members from Faculty of Arts, Sciences, Education, and Islamic Learning. The questionnaires were sent to 150 faculty members and 100 participants responded with a response rate of 66 percent.
