Collection Development In The Humanities And Social Sciences In A Transitional Age: Deaccession Of Print Items, David E. Woolwine
Collection Development In The Humanities And Social Sciences In A Transitional Age: Deaccession Of Print Items, David E. Woolwine
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
A literature review of user preferences, research habits and needs, and citation studies are used to argue that deaccession of print titles in the humanities and social sciences in academic libraries should occur in a conservative fashion as libraries transition to greater digital holdings. The issue of retention of translations is given special emphasis. The centrality of engaged research for undergraduate education makes the retention, at present, of both a rich print and digital collection necessary as the distinction between a collection geared toward faculty research and one for undergraduate research becomes less important.

The results show Borko's contributions to library and information science by publication productivity, subject distribution, collaborative authorship and other scientometric parameters.
Open Source Integrated Library Systems In Public Libraries, Tony Brooke
Open Source Integrated Library Systems In Public Libraries, Tony Brooke
School of Information Student Research Journal
One of the most fundamental decisions a library makes is choosing an integrated library system, or ILS. A public library can remove unwanted outside influence and save money by switching their ILS to free and open source software, or FOSS. This article is an examination of the progress made by FOSS ILSs to become not only contenders against proprietary systems, but also an appropriate choice for financial, functional, and philosophical reasons. Included is a timeline of published evaluations, the milestone of 14% adoption, a summary of the current landscape, and example implementation cases. A functional analysis shows why a public …

The historical antecedents, social and economic status of women are examined, and the influence of computers and technology in the library is considered. Common traits that typify the film librarian, along with the inclusions of computers in the library, are identified and analyzed. Approaches to combatting the stereotypes are discussed and applied to the movies in order to discover any progression of the image …

This paper examines whether projects making use of the METS metadata schema do so due to its flexibility or its interoperability. Projects listed in the METS Implementation Registry of the Library of Congress METS Official Web Site, as well as selected case studies are analyzed for the reason METS was used in their projects. Data gathered from these sources is consolidated and further analyzed using cluster analysis in order to answer the research questions: 1) Can it be said that METS is being selected for projects based primarily on one of two criteria: its flexibility or its interoperability?” And if …

Linked Data And The Library Of Congress, Corinne M. Laurence
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The Resource Description Framework (RDF) is a machine-processable metadata standard created to link pieces of data from around the World Wide Web. It does this by creating meaningful statements about resources, which are identified by Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs). The Linked Data (LD) that emerges will be part of the Semantic Web, a new way of linking, searching, and finding information on the Web. Libraries around the world have begun to adopt RDF for their metadata in an attempt to make their metadata more discoverable on the World Wide Web, where the majority of their users are. The Library of …

In today’s work environment there is a drastic change in the way how information are shared as well as networking and socializing take place in every society. No doubt that the Internet has become a powerful tool for communication purposes, to exchange ideas, and even used in participation in local, national and international networking. The history of the Internet emerges back in 1960s when several computer scientists were hired by Pentagon to build a system to decentralize communication network. As a result the Arpanet was born. Over time the network grew rapidly to interconnect numerous universities, research centers as well …

This second paper will consider in detail how Dreyfus’ model might be used by academic librarians to scaffold information literacy learning opportunities that foster students’ development of information behaviors characteristic of experts within various disciplinary contexts. The article draws on several of the models mentioned in the previous article as well as representative works in the IL field that have put forward instructional activities and pedagogical strategies both for teaching generic IL skills …

Assessing The Emotional Intelligence Profile Of Public Librarians In Malaysia: Descriptive Analysis, Mad Khir Johari Abdullah Sani (Phd), Mohamad Noorman Masrek (Phd), Noor Zaidi Sahid, Fuziah Mohd Nadzar (Assoc. Prof.)
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This article reports the findings of a study that measures the Emotional Intelligence (EI) among librarians in Public Libraries in Malaysia. Public librarians are important assets since they are social agents that advocate the development of a knowledge society in Malaysia. As employees in service organizations, they are expected to be highly dynamic and provide quality services. These jobs involve communicating, empathizing with, understanding, and learning from other members working in the organizations. These skills require not only a high degree of intellectual ability but a high level of EI. EI, therefore, seems essential to be measured for library employees’ …

Aligning The Principles Of Permaculture Design With Sustainable Open Access Practice, Jennifer Laherty, Stacy Konkiel
SJSU Open Access Conference
Open Access has seen increased acceptance in recent years, yet academic libraries continue to struggle with supporting and growing the Open Access institutional repositories (IRs) and increasing faculty awareness of and buy-in for Open Access and related scholarly communication issues. In this presentation, we propose a reframing of Open Access and scholarly communication strategies using the twelve principles of permaculture, an environmental design theory that provides a sustainable architecture for self-maintained agricultural systems modeled from naturally occurring ecosystems (Hemenway, 2009). Such an approach is beneficial for many reasons. Permaculture emphasizes maximum benefit from minimum effort and resources, which resonates with …

Interest in student peer-reviewed open-access journals is beginning to grow. Our presentation will explore what it takes to produce such a journal and what it delivers in terms of student experience. We begin with an overview of the value of student research. We will also address student involvement in the Scholarly Communication process, as presented in ACRL’s publication Intersections of Scholarly Communication and Information Literacy.
We will look at three OA peer-reviewed student journals. For each, we will learn the motivations to create such publications and how faculty advisors and editors determine their audience. Questions will include: breadth (regional, national, …

The Decision: Should We Harness Moocs To Reform Copyright Law Or To Promote Open Educational Resources?, Marcus Banks
SJSU Open Access Conference
Massive open online courses (MOOCs) have the potential to radically reshape higher education. MOOCs are available to anyone with an Internet connection, for free or at sharply reduced cost compared to tuition for in-person classes. The pedagogical effectiveness of MOOCs is currently a topic of intense debate. Some people argue that MOOCs will never equal classroom instruction while others believe that they are a democratizing force with the potential to offer education of equal or greater quality than what we have known before.
This debate is likely to persist for years. Much less examined is an implicit assumption behind the …

Forging A New Path: Faculty Buy-In For The Institutional Repository And Open Access Publishing, Carol G. Hixson, Tina Neville, Deborah Henry

Many institutions with institutional repositories have had difficulty getting faculty buy-in to add their content to the institutional repository. The University of South Florida St. Petersburg (USFSP), a separately accredited institution within the USF System, has experienced significant buy-in from its faculty for depositing materials in the institutional repository, known as the USFSP Digital Archive. In a small institution of 5000 students, we have established collections for over one quarter of our faculty, with almost 1400 separate submissions in only two years. Faculty have also developed an understanding of and appreciation for open-access publishing and now consult with the library …
