Outreach To Campus Administrators On Open Access Initiatives, Ryne Leuzinger, Jacqui Grallo

SJSU Open Access Conference

As librarians work to develop and support open access (OA) initiatives, it is essential that they communicate effectively with administrators, from the head of the library to the president or chancellor of their university. Librarians often find themselves at the nexus of OA initiatives and are well-positioned to bring together the interests of various units on campus and advocate for a given initiative to campus administration. In this presentation, which will be applicable to a broad range of higher education institutions, we will discuss effective practices and key takeaways from an open access initiative at CSUMB that focused on textbook …

Open Access And The Logic Of Collective Action, John Wenzler Oct 2015

Open Access And The Logic Of Collective Action, John Wenzler

SJSU Open Access Conference

In the digital age, academic libraries confront the dilemma of collective action. In the era of print, each library stored, organized and provided access to a collection of scholarly resources for researchers at a local institution. On an integrated electronic network, all of these tasks become shared endeavors. One copy of a journal article housed on an Internet server provides faster and more convenient access to the scholarly community than 1,000 printed copies scattered across the country. Thus, the work of maintaining the article and making it discoverable can be done by one organization for the entire community instead of …

SJSU Open Access Conference

At San Jose State University, a paper-based archive centering on library and information science history is being processed, organized, and uploaded onto ScholarWorks, the campus institutional repository. Prior to its digitization, the presenters grappled with many questions. What platform should be used to house the archive? What entry points would researchers expect in order to access the collection? What research purposes would this collection satisfy? The presenters will discuss their rationale for their decision-making in transferring 300 binders to an open access, digital format. Among the individuals who are involved in making this detail-rich collection openly accessible online and searchable …

A Primer On Grant Writing For Foundation Support For First-Time Grant Writers In Academic Libraries: Challenges And Opportunities, Peter L. Kraus Sep 2015

A Primer On Grant Writing For Foundation Support For First-Time Grant Writers In Academic Libraries: Challenges And Opportunities, Peter L. Kraus

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

In a majority of academic disciplines, grant writing is a skill that is often self-taught or acquired informally by trial and error. Few academic disciplines have grant writing as standard part of their curriculum at the graduate level. In the past, grant writing has received little or no emphasis in traditional library education since library science faculty themselves have a poor record of pursuing external funding. Yet, grant writing is a critical skill for new and experienced librarians. For many librarians, the prospect and challenge of writing a grant can seem daunting; however, with institutional support and the support of …

Conventional Wisdom Or Faulty Logic? The Recent Literature On Monograph Use And E-Book Acquisition, Amy Fry Aug 2015

Conventional Wisdom Or Faulty Logic? The Recent Literature On Monograph Use And E-Book Acquisition, Amy Fry

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The idea that academic libraries acquire a great many books that are never used, and that this is because traditional collection development – i.e., professional librarians purchasing books based on subject expertise and local knowledge of student and faculty needs and interests – is ineffective, has been repeated frequently during the last decade. This claim has been used as justification to change collection practices and to bolster ideas about new organizational models for libraries and their work. A closer look at the literature, however, reveals that the data being cited to support this claim has been communicated, for the most …

A Librarian Run’S For Political Office (Or Cincinnatus Looks Outside The Ivory Tower), Peter L. Kraus

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Librarians have long been activists for social and political causes outside of their profession; however, few take the crucial step and actually run for political office at the local, state, or national level. In March 2014, after being involved in local and state politics for over ten years and volunteering for political campaigns at the local, state, and national level, and with some encouragement from individuals I knew in political and academic circles, I threw myself into the political realm by registering to run as a (moderate) Republican for a House seat in the Utah Legislature. Little did I know …
