In late September 2024, Hurricane Helene moved from Florida up the east coast of the United States. The hurricane struck land in the Florida panhandle, and moved north up through North Carolina. It passed over much of Georgia. The hurricane made landfall at around 11pm in Perry, Florida on Thursday, September 26. That night, it moved up through Georgia, and through to North Carolina. Governor Brian Kemp issued a state of emergency for Georgia, and later a state of emergency for 41 counties in Georgia. A Flag Of Honor: How A Library Project United A Community Through Service And Story, Timothy Cole Hale

Georgia Library Quarterly

A community project at the Cobb County Public Library’s Georgia Room honors veterans through a large American flag made of dog tags, each representing a loved one’s military service. Created in partnership with the Fielding Lewis Chapter of the DAR, the flag became a living archive of remembrance and storytelling. Hundreds contributed, turning the display into a mosaic of memory and a testament to the role of public libraries in building community.

This case study presents Swappin’ Stories, a community-based archiving event that serves as a model for public and participatory archiving. The event aimed to address gaps and misrepresentations of southern Appalachia by gathering the voices, artifacts, and stories of Towns County residents. By centering local narratives, it sought to foster a sense of community identity and offer an authentic portrayal of North Georgia, distinct from the narratives shaped by popular media and political figures. This case highlights the potential of community-driven archives to reclaim and reshape regional histories.

This report complements the quantitative findings published earlier in the “Survey Report on Technology Use in Georgia Libraries” in the Winter 2025 issue of Georgia Library Quarterly. This report presents the results of the following open-ended questions: 1. What are the top three technology skills required for your job in the library?, 2. What technology-related skills and knowledge do you consider essential for entry-level librarians?, 3. Which technology-related knowledge and skills do you consider essential to be incorporated into the MLIS curriculum?

The Georgia Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (GLS) is undertaking a year-long "Road Trip" in 2025, visiting a different public library system each week. This initiative aims to reconnect with library staff and potential patrons across Georgia. GLS staff deliver information, promotional materials, and engage with communities to increase awareness and access to their services for individuals with disabilities. The road trip also features a monthly blog to document their progress and build connections statewide.
