This document updates Musselman Library’s 2013 Strategic Plan, retaining the strategic directions that still require attention and adding new priority areas. This update grew out of an all-staff discussion on November 3, 2016, in which library employees identified areas of success/completion and pinpointed unfinished business from the 2013-2016 plan. The staff also suggested other areas to develop. In response to these suggestions, department heads updated the 2013-2016 plan.

In this update we have:

• Retained three strategic directions from the original plan with some changes and additions: Lifelong Learning, Sustainability, and Assessment.
• Reframed the Leadership plank in the context of …

In 2015-2016, Musselman Library at Gettysburg College participated in Cohort 3 of the Association of College and Research Libraries’ Assessment in Action program. This report outlines an assessment completed of former undergraduate library interns in order to explore the impact their internship experience had on the development of career goals, acceptance to and preparation for graduate education, and their early career. Through an online survey (n= 45) and six semi-structured telephone interviews, respondents reported a positive impact on the above areas.

Open-access AI educational resources are vital to the quality of the AI education we offer. Avoiding the reinvention of wheels is especially important to us because of the special challenges of AI Education. AI could be said to be “the really interesting miscellaneous pile of Computer Science”. While “artificial” is well-understood to encompass engineered artifacts, “intelligence” could be said to encompass any sufficiently difficult problem as would require an intelligent approach and yet does not fall neatly into established Computer Science subdisciplines. In the summer of 2016, Gettysburg College’s Musselman Library piloted a student-focused, library-led initiative designed to promote creative undergraduate research: the Digital Scholarship Summer Fellowship. The fellowship is a ten-week, paid summer program for rising sophomores and juniors that introduces the student fellows to digital scholarship, exposes them to a range of digital tools, and provides space for them to converse with appropriate partners about research practices and possibilities. Using case studies from two academic libraries (Gettysburg College and Lycoming College), this presentation demonstrated how libraries can strengthen the profession by nurturing undergraduates to explore librarianship as a career. The presentation provided a snapshot of how libraries may mentor students, either informally or through a formal internship program, including how to supervise interns and fund, market, and structure the internship.

Editing and publishing a student research journal is a high-impact educational practice that libraries are uniquely suited to support. Gettysburg College’s Musselman Library hosts three student-edited journals in our open access institutional repository. We train student editors to use the online journal publishing platform to receive, assign, and review submissions. We also expose them to the scope of undergraduate publishing beyond our institution, describe the benefits of open access publishing to authors (including sharing their own use metrics), invite professors who edit professional journals to share their expertise with the students, and facilitate a discussion about how their editing process …

The Gettysburg College Dance Card Collection contains over 100 dance cards from multiple accessions and of differing sizes and materials. The collection was previously kept in small, crammed boxes; its re-housing and digitization were an evident necessity. The needs and goals of this project were two-pronged: first, establishing physical and intellectual control over the items by building custom housing and enhancing item descriptions; and second, creating a digital collection featuring samples and highlights of the dance cards.
