Harding University

• Evolved as a response to practical problem. Professional literature review came much later.
• Research Consultations part of the three-legged stool (along with Ref Desk and Group Instruction).
• Available by appointment (different librarians have different scheduling mechanisms)
• Available in-person, by phone, video conferencing

"Assessing The Library: A Christian Liberal Arts College's Library-Wide Assessment Project", Amy James

This article reports on a library-wide assessment project at Spring Arbor University’s White Library. It highlights the methods used to assess each element, along with a recap of the findings, and a section covering the successes and caveats. The library’s website was evaluated using a focus group strategy where users completed a set of tasks using the website. The physical space was evaluated using a whiteboard approach. The freshman research instruction program at the White Library consists of one and two shot library sessions. The current teaching approach was assessed using “muddiest point cards”along with surveys.

How did a small institution with limited seed funding get faculty buy-in with the OER and textbook affordability movement to the point of $1 million in student savings, two faculty-authored open textbooks (one written collaboratively with graduate students), and several open textbook reviews and adoptions, all within five semesters? OER momentum and awareness of textbook affordability issues is a growing concern in higher education. Learn how we structured an open textbook initiative to incentivize faculty and turn what began as an innovation grant into permanent sustainable funding for the Library Textbook Affordability Program.

This practice-oriented article outlines one institution’s process of implementing both electronic checkout and a new integrated library system (ILS) for an academic library of 187,000 physical items. The session attendees worked together to produce sample lesson plans, using the “backwards design planning structure” introduced by Wiggins & McTighe in Understanding by Design. Information Search Strategies Among Theological Faculty Members In Tamil Nadu, Yesan Sellan, Dr. S. Ally Sornam, Associate Professor And Head

This research article studies the information seeking search strategies used by theological faculty members in Tamil Nadu. It is based on a structured questionnaire sent to 120 select faculty members, of which 101 questionnaires were returned, achieving a response rate of 84%. Major findings of this study contribute to understanding the awareness and use of search options among respondents. Basic and keyword search options are commonly used by respondents in online sources while preferences for references from books and journals are more popular among faculty members to locate bibliographic information in print sources. This essay will address the histories of four major publishing companies in Grand Rapids: Zondervan, Baker, Eerdmans, and Kregel. These publishing companies, through their individual and interwoven histories have shaped and sustained the publishing industry in the Midwest, and Grand Rapids in particular. These publishing houses are significant to the history of books and publishing because, for roughly a century, these publishing houses have been producing Bibles and other evangelical materials that are educating people the world over, from the youngest Sunday school pupils to the oldest seminarian. After working as a public and school library director for two decades, the challenge of reference and research work in an academic library is exciting and daunting for a mid-career librarian. She quickly realizes that constantly comparing fondly remembered library experiences with new professional challenges must transition into embracing what lays ahead and learning new skills. To successfully serve an academic library patron population, the variety of knowledge and information expertise is different and expanded, but the time-honored aptitude of treating library visitors well and carefully ascertaining their information needs remains the same.

Building on experience with a campus digital fluency initiative, a sustainable professional development model has been developed that is transferable to mentoring the next generation of leaders in many areas in higher education. Data from four years of faculty development in digital fluency will be shared along with how to get buy-in from administration and motivation for faculty to change current teaching styles to incorporate more technology into existing pedagogy.

Same Titles, Different Formats: Does Print Or Electronic Get More Use?, Alex Rolfe, Merrill Johnson

This article examines the use of both print and electronic monographs at George Fox University libraries over a period of thirty-three months for 8,500 titles that were held in both formats. Results indicate that print is more likely to be used than electronic. The implications of the findings, as well as related factors determining future decision making relative to format, are discussed.

Maximizing Institutional Archives With Limited Resources: A Case Study, Beth Arjona

This practice-oriented article shares how one small institution on a tight budget without a fulltime archivist leveraged existing resources (human, technological, and physical) to maximize 75 years of institutional archives for a recent milestone alumni reunion. Projects included drafting an institutional history, interviewing long-time members of the institution, organizing photos for display, and providing alumni with access to yearbooks. Special attention is given to the process of creating a 20-minute institutional history video, which premiered at an alumni banquet and was shared with other constituents electronically. Creating A Father-Friendly Library: An Examination Of The Importance Of Fatherhood Support In Today's Library Service Model, Michael D. Wells

Research shows the importance of fathers being present in the lives of children.The absence of support for fathers, perpetuates a long standing generational decline in the viability of men as a whole. This work seeks to introduce librarians to the possibilities of libraries offering support for dads. With library use among males being very low, this is also an opportunity for libraries to serve those who are often forgotten. This paper illustrates how the National Fatherhood Initiative (NFI) offers a path to help dads and explains how the NFI and libraries can partner through the creation of programs.
