Have you ever asked yourself, what was that archivist thinking?!? This question especially rings true for legacy collections processed long ago following now-outdated theories, but it may also apply to recently processed collections. If we want to avoid becoming that archivist whose decisions our successors question, we must create and uphold more transparent processing practices. This, in turn, supports the integrity of each collection’s arrangement and description. In this presentation, two processing archivists/graduate students who processed collections together shared the strategies they created to facilitate transparency during team processing. In 2015, the Libraries began scanning theses and dissertations that were housed in our offsite storage facility. Many of these were single copies that were not held by any other library in the world, so we have insured their long term preservation in both print and electronic forms. We began scanning theses and dissertations in a then-cramped Gunnin Architecture Library, and are now scanning theses and dissertations housed in Cooper. The digitization process results in the removal of the circulating copies from Cooper and Gunnin, the creation of an electronic copy that is accessible anywhere on campus, and one non-circulating …

Clemson University and the U.S. National Park Service (NPS) have collaborated since 2010 to develop the Open Parks Network, an open repository of over 230,000 digital objects and metadata records chronicling the diverse cultural and natural history of our nation’s parks, historic sites, and other protected areas. Initially funded by an Institute of Museum and Library Services National Leadership Grant that ended in 2014, this joint effort to deliver wider public access to the unique resources located in NPS libraries, museums, and archives across the U.S. and territories is an intriguing case study in the dynamics of a relationship between …

Age diversity in the U.S. library workforce is a contemporary issue that reflects the large number of generational cohorts currently present in the labor pool. Despite predictions of workplace turnover, older generations are working past the traditional age of retirement, contributing to the unprecedented field of experience in the library workplace (Munde, 2010). Complicating this age diversity, studies indicate that generational difference can contribute to workplace conflict between employees of different generations (Cogin, 2012). This issue is felt acutely by medical librarians due to specialized knowledge and traditionally small staffing models.

Similar to individuals, organizations display characteristics that speak to qualities and abilities. Our guest writer, Lisa Bodenheimer, discusses a trait that is critical for library organizations during this period of constant change and transformation. Resiliency is the ability to rebound and flex as circumstances shift enabling an organization to thrive and adjust during difficult times. This skill is typically developed through experiences, but, as Ms. Bodenheimer outlines, organizations are able to strategize in order to build employee and organizational resilience. Prior to 2016 library instruction for mathematics courses was nonexistent at Shippensburg University. The hiring of the STEM librarian in August 2016 led to an initiative to engage the mathematics faculty and students in using resources and services offered by the Ezra Lehman Memorial Library. This outreach resulted in two sessions of the Fundamentals of Mathematics course coming into the library for instruction in the fall semester. These first sessions found that detailed instruction in how to search and identify articles related to key concepts from the desired journal type was particularly useful to the students; however, these sessions also …
