Patents are an under-used information source, in part because of an often-narrow focus by patent librarians on the tools and techniques of patentability searching. This approach can ignore a range of potential applications of patent information, using patents in their contexts as technical, design, historical, legal, and commercial documents. This paper suggests the adoption of a flexible approach, viewing patents and patent information in the greater context of information literacy, including that of the Association of College and Research Libraries’ Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, more commonly known as the ACRL Framework.

Communicating Across Age Lines: A Perspective On The State Of The Scholarship Of Intergenerational Communication In Health Sciences Libraries, Jenessa Mcelfresh, Rachel Keiko Stark

The purpose of this study was to review the existing literature on intergenerational workplace communication to identify trends or research pertaining to medical or health sciences library employees. Although the authors found no published literature that explicitly addresses intergenerational communication in health sciences libraries, it is worthwhile to explore the literature in related fields to identify applicable points of comparison to the experiences of health sciences librarians. This includes intergenerational communication research in management and leadership studies and medical literature, and the exploration of other intergenerational issues in the library literature.

The Metadata and Monographic Resources Team (MMRT) is tasked with describing and providing access points to Clemson Libraries’ Digital Collections. Have you ever asked yourself, what was that archivist thinking?!? As archivists process collections, they often find they must make difficult decisions that change the arrangement or description of a collection. If we want to avoid becoming that archivist whose actions our successors question, we should create and document more transparent processing practices. Documenting our decisions can improve communication, consistency, and clarity. It promotes transparency and, in turn, supports the integrity and authenticity of the collection. Clemson Libraries have been using ILLiad for more than a decade. Upon recently hosting representatives from OCLC for eventual Tipasa migration, we learned that we currently use flags the way we will need to use tags in the future. As Tipasa will not offer an option for custom queues, which are a major part of our workflow, we will need to adapt tags for use in place of custom queues. This poster will outline our current plan for transforming our workflows after migration.
